Bringing the Get Down to Downtown - Red Hat Amphitheater

Something for Everyone: "This one's a singalong ... but it has no lyrics, so good luck." -   Steve Martin.  In 2012 Red Hat, the world's leading provider of open source solutions, signed a five-year deal to transform Downtown's popular open-air concert venue into the Red Hat Amphitheater.  Red Hat has been a supporter of Raleigh's center city renaissance as an innovative, dining, cultural, entertainment destination. The amphitheater's location in the center of downtown's sizzling nightlife and its exceptional setting, which includes the CREE Shimmer Wall on the exterior of the Raleigh Convention Center, offers guests a memorable, "totally Raleigh" experience.  Highlights of the 2013 concerts included Bob Dylan and the IBMA Wide Open Bluegrass Festival.

From Head Bangers to Banjos:  "I think of my banjos as my children ... I love them all, but one's an idiot." - Steve Martin. The 2014 Season promises to be just as spectacular. The   IBMA Wide Open Bluegrass Festival returns on October 3rd and 4th (get your tickets now).  The June calendar includes Counting Crows with special guest  Toad The Wet Sprocket (6/25) and Pat Benatar with Neil Giraldo and Rick Springfield (6/29). There are seven events on the July calendar including John Legend (7/30), Beck (7/23), and O.A.R. (7/13). Multi-platinum selling, Grammy nominated recording artist Sara Bareilles is also stopping at the amphitheater on July 22 as part of her headlining "Little Black Dress" summer tour. August heats up with eight dates including the iconic band "Boston" (8/22).  The season finale closes with Earth, Wind, and Fire (10/09).  Click Here for all acts and calendar dates and links for tickets.

The Write Stuff - Baltz Fine Writing Instruments

Did you know that they don't even teach handwriting in school anymore? It's true; many school districts have stopped teaching cursive handwriting. After all, we're reading this Beltline Buzz via computer, and there's texting and emails. Plus letters stamped and mailed take 2-3 days to deliver, which seems like torture, as we can't even stand the suspense of not knowing whether or not someone has read our text 5 minutes ago.

However, the fine writing instrument and stationery industry has nothing to fear from this proliferation of  digital media. In fact a handwritten letter or thank you note means that much more.

Using and carrying a fine writing instrument is one way to enhance this experience while setting yourself apart from everyone else in this digitally dominated world.

A good pen is a lifelong companion. With time, it's useful functionality is gives way to familiarity and comfort.  It becomes part of your kit, your stuff; those things that go with you wherever it is you go.

Two Southern guys are making their mark with a line of handcrafted wooden pens. Baltz Writing instruments are handmade in Raleigh, by former Davidson College pals, Bart Creasman and Cass Baltz. They are dedicated to creating unique pens that stand apart from the masses, perform flawlessly, and through their distinctive design create a sense of expectation. They are an affordable luxury, and cost just enough to make sure you never misplace your pen.

They believe that each customer will appreciate the uniqueness of the details in his or her own pen. "We wanted to bring back an old craft with products that are all made in America," Creasman says.

Baltz fine wood pens can be found at Bailey's Fine Jewelry in Cameron Village or Crabtree Valley Mall. Or you can purchased online.

Write on with your Baltz pen! Just don't send your letters to elementary and middle school aged kids...they won't be able to read them.  We have no idea how these kids are going to sign things.

The Beltline Buzz items are selected by our editors.  No one can pay to be featured on
The Beltline Buzz..  That's what advertising is for, and it's always labeled as such.  Selling ourselves (literally) would destroy the legitimacy, integrity, and fun of
The Beltline Buzz.  Plus, we'd never earn your trust that way.  So we'll never make a dime off your meal at a restaurant nor a penny from the sale of the latest accessory we told you about.

That said, on occasion, we will send out "Dedicated" e-mails on behalf of sponsors.  You'll recognize them from the subject line: "The Beltline Buzz Dedicated E-mail."  Yes, these are paid for.  And, no, we would never sell our subscriber list to anyone.  Not for any amount of money.

We hope that you continue to enjoy your Beltline Buzz.  We look forward to delivering it.
