Art and Soul - Artsplosure Saturday & Sunday
What is Art? Just kidding. Rather than quibble all day over such unanswerable questions, why not just find stuff you like, take it home and look at or use it?
Artsplosure is pleased to announce its programming lineup for its 35th annual namesake spring arts festival this coming Saturday and Sunday May 17-18 in and around Moore Square and on City Plaza in downtown Raleigh.
Celebrating fine visual art and live music since 1980, this year's festival continues the tradition of presenting high quality and accessible art for free in the heart of the capital city. As one of the Southeast's premier arts festivals, Artsplosure, The Raleigh Arts Festival attracts more than 80,000 people each year.
Art Market - One of the central elements of this annual celebration showcases the talents of nearly 180 juried independent visual artists and crafters, including NC artists and artists from across the US. Artwork by fine artists and craftspeople exhibiting in 10 different categories will be available for purchase, including painting, photography, pottery, jewelry, woodwork and more. This year's expanded Art Market will have booths lining Blount, Martin, Hargett and Davie Streets near Moore Square and City Market. The Art Market will be open Saturday, May 17 from 11:00am to 7:00pm and Sunday, May 18 from 10:00am to 6:00pm.
Live Entertainment - In addition to the visual arts, Artsplosure highlights superb rock, blues, country, folk, pop and roots-inspired musicians, with continuous live music on Saturday and Sunday on two stages in Moore Square and for the first time in Artsplosure history, a third stage in the Long View Center featuring acoustic music.
Headlining the Main Stage in Moore Square at 8:00 Saturday evening will be Tift Merritt, American singer-songwriter and musician, who grew up in North Carolina and has recently released her fifth studio album, Traveling Companion. Sunday afternoon at 5:30 will be a performance by Alejandro Escovedo, whose work includes stints in '70s punk band the Nuns, roots rock outfits Rank and File and True Believers, and a solo career that started in the early '90s.
The Main Stage in Moore Square lineup also includes performances by: guitar and banjo wielding Ryan LeBlanc; powerhouse vocalist Kim Wempe; blues mastermind Jonathon Boogie Long; guitar instrumentalist Johnny A.; cabaret/punk/folk group Maria in the Shower;
Artsplosure - The Raleigh Arts Festival is free to the public and is held rain or shine. Artsplosure is an independent nonprofit organization that has presented arts festivals in downtown Raleigh since 1980. For more information about this year's spring arts festival, visit website.
Find your favorite artists and see how they'd depicted the world you've never imagined before. In other words, art! So there!

The Mother Ship - George Clinton Fills Red Hat Amphitheater May 17
Uncut P-Funk: Funk is the radical essence that underlies every aspect of the P-Funk universe ... and George Clinton is the Mother Ship. As one of the creators of funk music, Clinton and the legendary Parliament Funkadelic have influenced multiple generations of musicians. Bringing their massive lineup, they will fill the Red Hat Amphitheater with original, uncut P-Funk on Saturday, May 17 at 7:30 pm. Radical "Musical Explorers": George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic took their music from Soul to the uncharted land of Funk in the 1970s, scoring chart busters such as "Flashlight," "One Nation Under a Groove," "Agua Boogie" and "(Not Just) Knee Deep" along the way. Collectively, the group is known for top-notch musicianship, politically charged lyrics, outlandish concept albums and memorable live performances. In 1997, Clinton and 15 members of Parliament Funkadelic were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. While famous members like Bootsy Collins have moved on to funkadelic pastures, the current lineup is just as energized and talented. "Because We Want the Funk. Gotta Have that funk": Tickets to hear the Grammy Award-winning, R&B revolutionary leader live in Downtown Raleigh start as low as $10. Tickets are on sale at: all Ticketmaster outlets; the Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts box office; or charge by phone at 1-800-745-3000. Doors open at 6:30 pm. Website

The Beltline Buzz items are selected by our editors. No one can pay to be featured on
The Beltline Buzz.. That's what advertising is for, and it's always labeled as such. Selling ourselves (literally) would destroy the legitimacy, integrity, and fun of
The Beltline Buzz. Plus, we'd never earn your trust that way. So we'll never make a dime off your meal at a restaurant nor a penny from the sale of the latest accessory we told you about.
That said, on occasion, we will send out "Dedicated" e-mails on behalf of sponsors. You'll recognize them from the subject line: "The Beltline Buzz Dedicated E-mail." Yes, these are paid for. And, no, we would never sell our subscriber list to anyone. Not for any amount of money.
We hope that you continue to enjoy your Beltline Buzz. We look forward to delivering it.
