Mex and the City - New Choices Join Old Favorites
Beans, Beans, the Musical Fruit: The More you Eat, the More you Toot! (& better you feel). Well, whoever invented that schoolyard saying was way ahead of his or her time. Perhaps it was Nostradamus who predicted this Holy Frito Bandito explosion of Mexican restaurants. All we know is that "Mex Sells" and there are now more Triangle salsa choices than ever ... from Chubby's to Chuy's, Ganza to Gringo, and every "Dos, El & Las" in between. And just when you think they can't fit any more Mez, up pops another Cantina 18 with killer margaritas (see our newest additions, below). So let's have beans for every meal!
Gringo is Now A Go-Go: It has been a couple months since we announced the coming of Gringo A Go-Go. Well, it finally opened last Friday (Jan 3) for lunch and dinner. Located in downtown Raleigh (in the former Ruben's Downtown Diner at 100 N. Person Street), Gringo's menu is filled with authentic Mexican foods, including fish tacos, pinto beans with rice and cornbread, ceviche tostados, and a gazpacho-like shrimp cocktail. Hunting for the perfect salsa? It's there along with a bar serving Mexican and local beers and liquors such as Mezcal tequila. The exterior dcor includes its signature "Gringo Bike Rack". Website
Something to Chew On - Chuy's Opens in North Hills: The famous Austin, Texas-based Tex- Mex restaurant chain Chuy's opened before Christmas at North Hills. This 8,000 square foot restaurant (pronounced CHEW-eez) serves a distinct "Big as Yo' Face" menu of authentic, made from scratch Tex-Mex inspired dishes in a fun, eclectic atmosphere. Each location offers a unique look and feel, as expressed by the concept's motto "If you've seen one Chuy's, you've seen one Chuy's!. Bean Me Up! Website, Menu
Go Gonzo over Ganza Tacos Y Tequila: Started in North Raleigh (Lead Mine Rd) & now in Wake Forest (S Main St), Ganza Tacos Y Tequila is definitely not your "Run of the Strip Mall" Mexican fare. It's much more ... a cross between fun, razzle-dazzle and contemporary, Latin American culture. The owner, Ganza Salamanca, is a member of the Salamanca family whose Mexican restaurants (Dos Taquitos Centro, Xoco) have pioneered the Mex and the City explosion. But Ganza is not a "me too" ... it's menu of 10 hand-made tacos rival anything in town and its specialty items (De la Tierrita, De los Gabachos, & The Ghost Menu) are distinctive. Check out the face paint and the "moving mannequins" ... and it pays to make reservations. Website, Menu
Remember ... Si comes frijoles no eructes jamn. Translation: If you eat beans, dont burp ham.

The Beltline Buzz items are selected by our editors. No one can pay to be featured on The Beltline Buzz.. That's what advertising is for, and it's always labeled as such. Selling ourselves (literally) would destroy the legitimacy, integrity, and fun of The Beltline Buzz. Plus, we'd never earn your trust that way. So we'll never make a dime off your meal at a restaurant nor a penny from the sale of the latest accessory we told you about.
That said, on occasion, we will send out "Dedicated" e-mails on behalf of sponsors. You'll recognize them from the subject line: "The Beltline Buzz Dedicated E-mail." Yes, these are paid for. And, no, we would never sell our subscriber list to anyone. Not for any amount of money. We hope that you continue to enjoy your Beltline Buzz. We look forward to delivering it. |
