Seducing Speed - Porsche by Design Exhibit opens at NC Museum of Art
"Porsche....there is no substitute" - Joel from Risky Business: Yes, Joel, there is no substitute for the North Carolina Museum of Art's (NCMA) newest exhibition, "Porsche by Design: Seducing Speed", which opens this Saturday, October 12 and runs through January 19, 2014. On display are 22 Porsche automobiles that together trace the evolution of Porsche's design aesthetic from its inception in the 1930s through the present day. It is the largest and most diverse group of Porsche automobiles ever on display in a U.S. art museum ... showcasing principles that have long linked Porsche with beauty, artistry, technology, and innovation.
"These cars are meant to be driven, not polished" - Dr. Ferry Porsche: Highlights of the Porsche by Design exhibit include:
The 1938/39 Type 64 Berlin to Rome racing car designed by Dr. Ferdinand Porsche.
Steve McQueen's own Porsche, a Type 356A from 1958, on loan to the Museum.
A handcrafted 1949 Gmnd coupe designed by Dr. Porsche's son "Ferry" Porsche.
Janis Joplin's psychedelic Porsche 356C, on loan from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum.
A rare Type 804 Formula One car (one of four Type 804s built) & the French Grand Prix winner in 1962.
"Perfomance on the order of an American muscle car ... without the stigma of low price!" - Road & Track: Porsche by Design is accompanied by a richly illustrated exhibition catalogue, featuring essays by Derek Bell, Miles C. Collier, and many other Porsche experts. Also, to provide a more in-depth experience, the Museum will release a series of short-format videos featuring interviews with Porsche collectors, historians, and enthusiasts. The videos include archival images of the Porsche family, a close look at signature Porsche design details, and footage of historic car races. Click Here for an example.
Porsche Raffle - "There are no old Porsches, only new Owners": Don't miss your chance to drive off in a sleek new Porsche car! In conjunction with the Porsche by Design exhibition, the NCMA Foundation is raffling off a 2014 Porsche Cayman S. All proceeds from the raffle will support Museum exhibitions and programming. Tickets are $100 (Only 2,500 tickets will be sold.) and you can buy online, in person at the Museum Box Office, or by calling (919) 715-5923.
"Remember, Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it." - Ferris Bueller. Car lovers will appreciate the rarity, art lovers will admire the beauty and sculpture, and everyone will fall for the seduction of speed. This is a "can't miss" exhibit that everyone in your family should see.

Latest Buzz on ... Fashion, Food and Fun
Gas Up at Gringo A Go-Go Taqueria - Opening in Downtown Raleigh
What's in a "Dash": Back in 1966, famous trumpeter Al Hirt had a hit song "Gringo A-Go-Go" (two "dashes") on his "Latin In The Horn" LP. Fast forward to 2013 ... Ben Shelton, the chef who started Lilly's Pizza at Five Points, is opening a taqueria called Gringo A Go-Go (one "dash") in the former Ruben's Downtown Diner at 100 N. Person Street. The building (originally opened in 1932 as Blowe's Service station) is being brought back to its blue and white roots. Outside is a giant green "GRINGO" bike rack and a small outdoor patio. Inside, the Gringo bar features stools made from tractor seats out of Mexico. Seating capacity is small (49) so expect to dine and "dash".
Another Slice of Mexico: With the success of Dos Taquitos (Centro & Xoco), Armadillo Grill, and Jose and Sons (grand opening October 9th), Raleigh's downtown clientele have shown a penchant for Mexican comida. Gringo's menu will be filled with authentic Mexican foods, including fish tacos, pinto beans with rice and cornbread, ceviche tostados, and a gazpacho-like shrimp cocktail. Shelton will be one of the restaurant's cooks and plans to serve nopales, a salad-type dish made of roasted cactus mixed with cilantro, tomatoes, jalapeo, radish, onion, and lime juice. The bar will serve Mexican and local beers and liquors such as Mezcal tequila.
Another Salsa, Please: Ever feel like you are on a constant salsa-safari trying to find the perfect condiment? Just like Heinz ketchup, there are at least 57 varieties of Mexican salsas. Gringo claims that salsa will be a priority so expect some fresh surprises and unique ingredients. Want your order (or salsa) delivered to your downtown office? No problem. Gringo will also offer delivery service in downtown Raleigh.
The final Grand Opening announcement is still TBD ... but should be soon. Andale Andale!

The Beltline Buzz items are selected by our editors. No one can pay to be featured on The Beltline Buzz.. That's what advertising is for, and it's always labeled as such. Selling ourselves (literally) would destroy the legitimacy, integrity, and fun of The Beltline Buzz. Plus, we'd never earn your trust that way. So we'll never make a dime off your meal at a restaurant nor a penny from the sale of the latest accessory we told you about.
That said, on occasion, we will send out "Dedicated" e-mails on behalf of sponsors. You'll recognize them from the subject line: "The Beltline Buzz Dedicated E-mail." Yes, these are paid for. And, no, we would never sell our subscriber list to anyone. Not for any amount of money. We hope that you continue to enjoy your Beltline Buzz. We look forward to delivering it. |
