Body Language - Cirque du Soleil's Quidam

Wed., July 10 - Sun., July 14

You don't need a shrink to tell you "learning to let go" is scary....Especially when you're balanced on a piece of wire, hovering some 23 feet above the ground, desperately gripping onto a wooden bar. Many choice phrases run through your mind, but "Let go!" is definitely not one of them.

Quidam Hang on there, tremble toes. Cirque du Soleil's magical show, Quidam with high flying acrobatics, impressive physical feats, beautiful dance renditions and colorful costumes and lighting are coming to Raleigh starting Wednesday at the PNC Arena, and you're invited to come and Watch this fabulous performance.

The show opens Wednesday July 10th and runs till Sunday July 14th. Show time each night is 7:30 pm (10th through 13th) and two show times at 1:00 and 5:00 on Sunday (the 14th).

Quidam is a classic in the Cirque repertoire. It appeals to young and old alike, and it has mature and also youthful themes that most people can relate to.

The story is about young Zo who is bored; her parents, distant and apathetic, ignore her. Her life has lost all meaning. Seeking to fill the void of her existence, she slides into an imaginary world - the world of Quidam - where she meets characters who encourage her to free her soul. Quidam: a nameless passer-by, a solitary figure lingering on a street corner, a person rushing past and swallowed by the crowd. Quidam It could be anyone, anybody. This is the "Quidam" whom this show allows to speak. This is the place that beckons - a place for dreaming and genuine relations where all Quidams, by proclaiming their individuality, can finally emerge from anonymity.

Fascinating acts with creativity inspired on simple forms such as skipping rope draws inspiration from dance, acrobatics and the art of manipulation. Cirque du Soleil has transformed this familiar child's game into a choreographic feat. As the ropes beat time, a group of 20 acrobats, endowed with exceptional co-ordination and rhythm, perform a steady stream of solo, duo and group jumps and figures.

The banquine act showcases the amazing agility of the human body. Fifteen artists perform spectacular Quidam sequences of acrobatics and human pyramids, astounding audiences with their perfectly synchronized movements.

An artist becomes a human spoke as he spins, turns, twists and maneuvers a wheel, performing gravity-defying somersaults and acrobatics. This gymnastic exercise has taken the wheel to a whole new level. These are a just a few of the breathtaking stunts in defying gravity you'll enjoy at Quidam.

So when sharpening pencils and pushing papers at work starts to drive you crazy, just imagine... give it all up and join the circus! (Only if you're able to bend your body into a human pretzel and don't mind friends calling you Gumby!)

Quidam: Wed., July 10 - Sun., July 14 at the PNC Arena, 1400 Edwards Mill Road in Raleigh, NC 27607.

Show times: 7:30pm July 10-13, 1:00 and 5:00 July 14.

The Beltline Buzz items are selected by our editors.  No one can pay to be featured on The Beltline Buzz..  That's what advertising is for, and it's always labeled as such.  Selling ourselves (literally) would destroy the legitimacy, integrity, and fun of  The Beltline Buzz.  Plus, we'd never earn your trust that way.  So we'll never make a dime off your meal at a restaurant nor a penny from the sale of the latest accessory we told you about.

That said, on occasion, we will send out "Dedicated" e-mails on behalf of sponsors.  You'll recognize them from the subject line: "The Beltline Buzz Dedicated E-mail."  Yes, these are paid for.  And, no, we would never sell our subscriber list to anyone.  Not for any amount of money.

We hope that you continue to enjoy your Beltline Buzz.  We look forward to delivering it.
