New Year's Resolutions vs. Bucket Lists
By Stacy Zimmerman, Speedster editor

We are now one month into the New Year... How many of you are sticking to your resolutions? How many of you didn't even bother making resolutions?

In late December, I read an article that made me look at resolutions in a different way. The article discussed New Year's resolutions vs. bucket lists. Resolutions seem so stark sometimes. They are these general statements that we declare to our friends and family that we are going to eat healthier, walk more, keep in touch, etc. Many times resolutions are framed negatively - I won't do this or that anymore - and then the feelings of deprivation kick in.

Making a bucket list for 2016 seems so much more exciting to me - like an adventure, right? Creating a short list of things that I want to see, do, learn, achieve and discover throughout the year somehow seems more doable and enjoyable to me. Your bucket list could be filled with places you want to go, things you want to do or dreams you've held onto for years. (And I'm sure at least one of them will have to do with an antique car!)

So after your finish reading Speedster, of course, take a few minutes to make a list of 3-5 things you want to do this year that will make your soul truly happy. You just created your 2016 bucket list. Now, go do one of them!

Oliver Masser's 1913 Model T Ford Touring
By Dr. Bruce O. Mosser, Jr., Linden, PA

Oliver Masser, a prominent farmer outside of Allenwood, Pennsylvania, purchased a new 1913 Model T Ford as a new means for transporting the family. His neighbor purchased a twin of the same year and posed for pictures. However, the conditions of Pennsylvania roads did not look kindly on the Model T. My grandmother stated that the horse and buggy was faster than that new "dangle" automobile. And so the story began for the Model T...

Oliver enjoyed his new found love of the automobile, but others looked upon this new motorized vehicle as a Sunday photo shoot. The Model T was stored in sheds on the farm, out of the weather, but not the mice on the horsehair-stuffed leather seats. The lights were changed to electric, as the original headlights were stored in the hayloft.

Years passed with the death of Oliver and his wife. His sons, Walter and Raymond, had no desire for the car. Walter had 19 children and Raymond had six children. The sons were allowed to go to the farm to settle the estate with my father selecting the Model T and the kerosene dining room light.

He transported the car back to Mackeyville until he built his house in Salona. Raymond established "The Mosser's Garage" in Salona, along Fishing Creek in the 1920s. It was a Flying A. Station, which is another story for another time. The car remained in a barn on the Bruce Mosser Senior property until his death in 1984. He worked all his life as a mechanic and bus contractor. It was my hope that he and I would restore the Model T when he retired in 1985.

Enter Ferd Page Restorations, who received the car and with monthly cash payments and Ferd and Jeff Orwig's knowledge, the car was restored and went to the Hershey Fall Meet in 1986. The Model T won a third place and returned to Page's after an accident on the trailer. The "T" won its First Junior in 1988 in Downingtown, PA. My picture receiving the award was even in the ACAA magazine. The car was detailed in Maryland by Mr. Mari, who had restored an award-winning brass Model T of a past president of ACAA. The car was transported on my Amish-built trailer to Hagerstown, Maryland, to the 1990 National Spring Meet, where it won its Senior. The car won its First Preservation in 1990 at the Southeastern meet in Kingsport, Tennessee. The 1913 T had a repeat preservation at the 1994 Eastern Spring Meet and the 2000 Grand National in Montoursville, PA. The Susquehannock Region of ACAA held the Grand National in Montoursville, PA in 2000, where the Model T won the Grand National.

The car remains with me, along with a 1929 Model A Ford Roadster (Junior award winner restored by my friend and me), a 1970 convertible VW (Driver class) and a 2003 Convertible Ford Thunderbird Limited Edition. These all have histories that are unique. The love of automobiles and all related items from antique auto parts to banners have been a big part of my life. I owe this appreciation to my Grandfather and Bruce, Sr. who allowed me the opportunity to be part of a mechanic's life.

Sweeping the garage floor, cleaning the windows, changing the oil and tires, making runs to the auto parts store, pumping gas and the grease and oil under my fingernails all made me the person I am today - the custodian, as well as the owner, of Oliver's 1913 Model T Ford.

Top 10 Car Songs of Rock and Roll
By Tara Hurlin, Reprinted from Hagerty.com

In this day and age, you may find yourself feeling way overdue for a good old fashioned car song; not the kind of song that just happens to mention a car while singing about something else, but a musical foot-tapping masterpiece that pays homage to a specific automobile. Allow us to reflect back on some now-classic rock 'n' roll car songs.

"Hot Rod Lincoln," Charlie Ryan/Commander Cody and his Lost Planet AirmenThe Hot Rod Lincoln in question was a Ford Model A coupe body fitted onto a 1941 Lincoln frame, and it was owned by singer and songwriter Charlie Ryan, who wrote and performed the original song in 1955. One fine honky-tonk band, Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen, performed the most popular version of the song in 1971 and won over crowds everywhere with their energy, humor and boogie-woogie piano beats.

Best Lyric: "My pappy said, 'Son you gonna drive me to drinkin' if you don't stop drivin' that Hot Rod Lincoln.'"

"Rocket 88," Ike Turner/Jackie Brenston: In 1949, Oldsmobile released the fastest car of its time and advertised it as having an overhead-valve V-8 Rocket engine, branding it with the slogan "Make a Date with a Rocket 88." By inspiring the song "Rocket 88 " - which is thought to be the major link between rhythm-and-blues and rock-and-roll - Oldsmobile hit two historical milestones with one vehicle.

Best Lyric: "Now that you've ridden in my Rocket 88, I'll be around every night about eight. You know it's great, don't be late. Everybody likes my Rocket 88"

"Pink Cadillac," Bruce Springsteen: From blues to rock to rap, more songs have been written about the classy Cadillac than any other car, and one of the many tunes deserving honorable mention was written by the Boss himself in 1984. In this song, Bruce is captivated by a girl because of her car, and it's no wonder why.

Best Lyric: "Now some folks say it's too big and uses too much gas. Some folks say it's too old, that it goes too fast. But my love is bigger than a Honda, it's bigger than a Subaru."

"Mustang Sally," Wilson Pickett: It was prime time for the first pony car when this song was released in 1966. Mack Rice actually wrote "Mustang Sally," but Wilson Pickett made it legendary in 1966 with his strong singing voice and fine groove. In the song, Sally is a bad girl of sorts who drives a Mustang around town, but Wilson wants her to slow down. Think of all of the proud Mustang owners of the 1960s rolling down the streets with this tune traveling through their rolled-down windows. Now whether you own a Mustang or not, go find the song, hit play, and sing it at the top of your lungs.

Best Lyric: "All you wanna do is ride around Sally, ride Sally, ride."

"Little Deuce Coupe," The Beach Boys: The Beach Boys have written some of the best car songs of all time, and "Little Deuce Coupe" is a favorite of the hot rod crowd, along with the car itself. The original 1932 Ford Coupe "Deuce" is what the Beach Boys celebrate during the '60s car culture craze, but little did they know that even decades after the song's 1963 release, fans of the little coupe would still be tapping their feet to this song.

Best Lyric: "She's got a competition clutch with the four on the floor, and she purrs like a kitten till the lake pipes roar."

"Hey Little Cobra," The Rip Chords: This surf-rock band released this catchy number about America's favorite roadster in 1964. The little Cobra struck the hearts of many, and to their fan's delight, the Rip Chords embraced the automotive infatuation of the times. Spring little Cobra, with all of your might.

Best Lyric: "The Stingrays and Jags were so far behind, I took my Cobra out of gear and I coast to the line."

"GTO," Ronny and the Daytonas: GTOs are thought of as the first American muscle car by many collectors, and this twangy tune was released in 1964, the same year that Pontiac's most-famous performance model was released. Ronny and the Daytona's appreciation for the car paid off as the debut single reached No. 1 on the Billboard Pop Singles chart and sold more than 1 million copies.

Best Lyric: "Little GTO, you're really lookin' fine. Three deuces and a four-speed and a three-eighty-nine. Listen to her tachin' up now, listen to her whine."

Go Lil' Camaro by The Ramones: Uumamamau-papaumamau! Like most of the Ramones songs, it's so simple that it's genius. This is the band that had a large hand in changing the sound of rock and roll forever, and they continued that trend with this song's release in 1987. Girls, cars, sun and fun means good fun for everyone.

Best Lyric: "Go lil' Camaro go, Oohhh!"

"Red Barchetta," Rush: Released in 1981, not only is this song about a fellow who finds his uncle hid an old red Fiat Barchetta in a barn, but it also reveals the fears of car lovers everywhere as motor laws change. Set in the future, this tune takes place in a world where stringent safety regulations force cars to evolve into massive modern safety vehicles, making poor little sports cars like the classic Barchetta illegal to drive on the roads.

Best Lyric: "I fire up the willing engine, responding with a roar. Tires spitting gravel, I commit my weekly crime."

"Mercury Blues," The Steve Miller Band: Originally titled "Mercury Boogie," this song was first written in 1948 by K. C. Douglas and Robert Geddins. There have been several covers, but in 1976, the Steve Miller Band's bluesy, soulful rock style gave it a nice, meaningful twist.

Best Lyric: "I'm going to buy me a Mercury, and I'll cruise up and down this road."

The Dog Days of Greyhound
By Matthew Hocker

If you went on bus trips as a child, you are probably familiar with Greyhound. The origins of the Greyhound name in the bus industry can be traced back to the 1920s, with the establishment of the Greyhound Lines. In 1926, the Greyhound Lines were eventually consolidated into a company known as the Motor Transit Company. In 1930, the company desired a catchier-sounding name, so it adopted the earlier Greyhound name and rebranded itself as the Greyhound Corporation. With its reputation for speed and grace, the greyhound dog quickly became a famous advertising mascot.

The company even employed the use of real greyhounds in their marketing strategy. In 1926, the Fageol Safety Coach Company presented a beautiful white greyhound to Edwin C. Ekstrom, then president of the Motor Transit Company. This gesture was made in recognition of the 50th Greyhound Parlor Coach delivered by Fageol. The dog was appropriately named Bus.

While Bus was viewed as a company mascot, it wasn't until the 1950s that Greyhound fully utilized real greyhounds in its advertising. With the popularization of television, Greyhound became a sponsor of the Steve Allen Show and used a live greyhound to promote its buses. The dog was named Steverino; this was a nod to comedian Louis Nye's infamous greeting to Allen, "Hi ho, Steverino!"

While the name would indicate otherwise, Steverino was in fact a female dog. When the sponsorship ended in 1958, she was renamed Lady Greyhound. To match this elegant-sounding name, she was often presented in public wearing a tiara and rhinestone collar.

After that, the company went gaga for Lady Greyhound. She made several appearances in TV and radio programs and was often present at bus terminal openings. The Detroit terminal was opened with a special ribbon-cutting ceremony, in which Lady Greyhound chewed her way through a ribbon of dog biscuits.

She was once even a guest of honor at Moravian College of Bethlehem, PA. Since Moravian's sports team mascot was a greyhound, she fit right in. As a part of her visit, Lady Greyhound was presented with an honorary degree in "Animal Letters."

When Lady Greyhound passed away, another greyhound assumed her role. However, she never reached the same level of popularity. When the new dog had puppies, they were given away to Girl Scouts on the Art Linkletter TV show.

Despite having lost a living mascot, the Greyhound name has lived on. Greyhound has remained one of the most recognizable companies in the bus industry, thanks in part to the dashing greyhound present on the livery of its buses.

Discover More:
If you are interested in learning more about the history of Greyhound, be sure to read The Greyhound Story by Oscar Shisgall or Going the Greyhound Way by Robert Gabrick. Both books are on hand here at the AACA Library. We also house the collection of the Museum of Bus Transportation (MOBT), which contains a wealth of material documenting the history of the bus industry as a whole, including shop manuals, sales literature, photographs, bus schedules and more!
