Surviving the Holidays
By Stacy Zimmerman, Speedster editor

We here at AACA Headquarters hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving this past week and were able to spend some quality time with family and friends. As we dive head-first into the rest of the holiday season, it's very easy to get stressed out. There never seems to be enough time to get everything done, and then the next thing you know, it's January and the holidays have passed you by in one big blur.

Here's my little survival tip for not just getting through the holidays, but enjoying them, too! I call it the "4 B Rules" and here they are...
  1. BE Present: Meaning be in the moment. Where ever you are, whatever you are doing, make that your priority. Don't let your mind be clouded with thoughts of things to do, places to go, people to see - just enjoy what you are doing at that moment.
  2. BE Thoughtful: Meaning be thoughtful of others, but especially of yourself. Being thoughtful of others is the easy part of this one; it's being thoughtful of yourself that usually gets pushed by the wayside. Make sure you are considering your own wants and needs during the holiday season.
  3. BE Kind: Meaning be kind to EVERYONE - even the person who cut you off in traffic. Plus, good karma is always the best kind!
  4. BE Happy: Meaning continue to do the things that make you happy. Just because it's the holidays, don't stop doing the things you love - and that includes tinkering with and driving your favorite antique car!
These may seem like simple rules, but that's the beauty of them - they are simple, easy to follow and EVERYONE can do them. They won't cost you a dime, but will bring you unimaginable "wealth" during the holidays!

The AACA National Board and National Staff
wish you a safe and very happy
(and a little less stressful) holiday season!
The TV Show We Have All Been Waiting For is Finally Here!
By Steve Moskowitz, AACA Executive Director, aaca1@aaca.org

Many in the hobby have been searching for quality car programming that does not involve "reality drama," wrench throwing, foul language, incorrect information and lack of believability. Thanks to the folks at Chip Taylor Communications, there is a new show debuting on Velocity Channel starting December 5th at 8:00 and 8:30 p.m. EST called The Appraisers.

The weekly show follows three unique and likeable car nuts (all AACA members of course!) who travel around to several car events and collections across the country to visit with collectors of every breed. There are hobbyists with one car and those with collections many of us can only dream about. What makes these stories come alive is the human interest and the skills of the stars in interviewing a great cast of "characters." You will get to see everything from a Mohs Safarikar to a Lamborghini... that really is spanning a lot of design territory! A great many of these stories took place at AACA events and with our very own members! While the stories do have an element of "what is my car worth?," the stories behind each car and the history of the manufacturer are sure to delight and be a refreshing change.

AACA has lent our support to this show. The cast, which includes high-end Las Vegas car dealer Ben Nef, AACA Past President Tom Cox and AACA Library & Research Center Head Librarian Chris Ritter, coalesce well, entertain without being lude or rude, and bring a believable insight into the world of car collecting. Adding to this mix is the chance to tell the stories of great cars through the passion of their owners, something the club feels is very important.

Louise Bianchi Chiotti Memorial Scholarship Award Available

Louise (Bianchi) Chiotti was born on June 11, 1914 in San Jose California. The Family's first automobile was a 1926 Dodge Sedan. Her two younger brothers purchased a 1939 Studebaker and took delivery in January 1939. They wanted to give it to Louise's son Dave in 1956. His mother thought it too big of a car for a fifteen year old in San Francisco and talked him into buying a 1930 Model "A" Ford Coupe. In 1959 the little Ford was a bit slow, so Dave purchased a 1959 Ford convertible. As Dave sat on the running board of the Ford waiting for the new owner to arrive his mom came and sat next to him. "You really don't want to sell it do you?" she asked. "No I don't was my reply."  "Then don't," Mom said.

Dave and Marilyn Chiotti still own the Model "A"; it is a Senior and First Place Grand National Award Winner. The 1939 Studebaker came to the Chiottis after spending 40 years under a walnut tree. It is now a Senior and First Place Grand National Award Winner. The 1926 Dodge was cut into a truck for ranch use in the 1940's. Dave brought it home in 1976 and built a Woodie. In 2000, they donated it to Luther Burbank Home & Gardens in Santa Rosa. After Dave and Marilyn's uncle's passing, they acquired their 1968 Cadillac El Dorado. It now lives in the AACA Museum in Hershey, PA. This $1,500 scholarship is based upon the same rules as the AACA Automotive Technology Award and is awarded as funds are available. It was instituted and funded by Dave and Marilyn Chiotti as a way to honor Louise and a way to continue to support youth in the hobby.

Location, Location, Location: 10 Car Names Inspired by Places
Reprinted from Hagerty.com

After animals, location names hold a special place in the hearts of automotive marketers. The more prestige or glamour that attaches to the place name, the better, even if the majority of buyers can't find it on the map.
  1. Chevrolet Monte Carlo: Chevy grabbed this chic Riviera tax haven for its new-for-1970 personal luxury car. They went on to use the name for more than 30 years.
  2. Dodge Monaco: Since Chevy had already grabbed Monte Carlo (the name of the city) Dodge settled for the name of the tiny principality in which Monte Carlo is situated. It's a reasonable certainty that few if any Dodge Monacos have ever been seen parked in front of the famous casino or dropping the rich and famous off at their yachts - if for no other reason than fact that Monaco's narrow streets would have a tough time accommodating the full-size Monaco, the same car made famous as the Bluesmobile in the movie "The Blues Brothers."
  3. Chevrolet Malibu: Chevy's ever-popular mid-size sedan was of course named after the seaside L.A.-area town loved by celebrities and hated by uber slacker "The Dude" in the Coen Brothers classic, "The Big Lebowski."
  4. Cadillac Eldorado: The Eldorado was indeed named after a place, albeit a mythical one. El Dorado was the legendary city of gold sought by countless Spanish conquistadors.
  5. Kaiser Manhattan: The wartime ship-building company-turned-auto manufacturer built the distinctive Manhattan sedan. We're reasonably sure that it was named after the NY borough, not the cocktail, but given the times, you never know.
  6. Mercury Monterey: Mercury used the name of this historic California seaside town steadily from the early 1950s through the early 1970s, later slapping it on a lackluster minivan before killing off the Mercury brand entirely.
  7. Buick Riviera: Buick certainly hoped to conjure up the glamour of the south of France with its new-for-1963 personal luxury coupe, but in truth it was the second time that Buick has appropriated the name of France's Mediterranean playground, which is home to places like Cannes, Nice and Sainte Tropez.
  8. Mercury Montego: For no apparent reason, Mercury swiped the name of a resort community in Jamaica.
  9. Renault Floride: Perhaps as payback for Buick appropriating "Riviera," Renault named its stylish little convertible the Floride, which is French for "Florida."
  10. Toyota Tacoma: Tacoma lives forever in the shadow of its larger neighbor to the north, Seattle. And while that town is known for grunge music and coffee, Tacoma will forever have the association with one fine small pickup.
The Metropolitan Owners Club of North America (MOCNA) Goes to Hershey
By Mark Grimsley, Chattanooga, TN,  msg1021@comcast.net

Steve Moskowitz, AACA executive director, visiting the MOCNA hospitality tent at Hershey this year.
President of MOCNA Brad Swiggert and Herb Oakes (past AACA president) of the AACA talking at the joint MOCNA/AACA meet in Shelbyville, TN.
This year at the AACA National Meet in Hershey, PA, MOCNA had a hospitality/information tent in the flea market. The tent was in a great location and we had many visitors. There were many club members who visited and several Met owners who were not club members.

One visitor to the tent was Steve Moskowitz, the Executive Director of the AACA. Steve made a social call to welcome MOCNA to the Hershey Meet and to offer an invitation for our club to participate in more of the AACA meets. As many will recall, there was a joint meet with MOCNA and the AACA in Shelbyville, TN. Some 27 Mets participated in that show.

At the Tacoma board meeting, Brad Swiggert in his President's address spoke of the importance of reaching out to other car clubs to have joint meets. There are a vast variety of other clubs that would make great matches for a joint meet with MOCNA. The Nash club, British car clubs, orphan car clubs and other car clubs that welcome all makes such as the AACA.

As a longtime member of both MOCNA and the AACA, I am pleased to see such a friendly and welcoming attitude from the AACA. I would encourage local AACA chapters and regions to reach out to the local MOCNA clubs and have joint meets.

Together, we can keep this great hobby going!

Rediscovering the AACA Emblem
By Matthew Hocker

Have you read the library column in the latest issue of Antique Automobile? In this issue, Catalog Librarian Mike Reilly wrote about the history behind Antique Automobile magazine. One of the subjects covered was the development of the club's emblem. In 1939, the club began marketing 1 lb brass badges that featured the emblem. We did not have any of these badges in the collection... until now.  AACA President Don Barlup saw Mike's article and answered the call by donating his badge to AACA Headquarters!

The car featured within the emblem is an 1895 Duryea. One of the reasons a Duryea was chosen was because of its historical significance. The 4-cylinder 1893 Duryea was one of the first American gas-powered vehicles. Brothers J. Frank and Charles E. Duryea created the car and, in 1937, Charles Duryea gave the club permission to use the Duryea as its symbol.

Because of his contribution, Duryea became the club's first honorary member. Since then, more than 150 people have been inducted as honorary members, from racecar driver Ralph de Palma to esteemed designer Alexis De Sakhnoffsky. On his acceptance, Duryea humbly wrote "no one can do much, but everyone should help a little. Leave the world better because we lived."

The second person to receive an honorary membership was Herbert Van Haagen of Upper Darby, PA. An immigrant from Germany, Haagen received the award in recognition of his role in designing the AACA logo in 1939. Haagen was the chief engineer for a dental company, and his coworkers introduced him to the world of AACA.

With a symbol to stand behind, AACA took Haagen's work and manufactured the bronze badge you see here. The badges could be mounted on members' cars and provided advertising for AACA wherever they traveled. At a cost of $1.50 each, they helped raise money for the club, and they were also given away as prizes during club events.

Amazingly, the emblem has changed very little over the years. The biggest difference is that instances of the letter 'U' are written in the Greek style, appearing as 'V.' (ANTIQVE AVTOMOBILE CLVB)  This 'V' would be replaced by the more widely accepted 'U' in 1951.

Unfortunately, Charles Duryea would not live to see the logo realized. He passed away in 1938, the year before Haagen finished his design. That the Duryea car has remained a prominent part of the emblem since then stands as a memorial to the man and a testament to his vision.

News From the AACA Museum

T'was the month before Christmas and all through the Museum
Our elves were busy placing cars and trees where guests could best see 'em

The mini cars are stacked in neat little rows
And Sammy can't wait for the first fallen snows

The trees are all trimmed with Grinches and gold
And there's even a GIANT pedal car from its own special mold

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is here from her Broadway tour show
With her flying wings and theatre lights that glow

When Thomas the Tank Engine to his team gives a whistle
'Round the tracks the model trains run with the speed of a missile

From headlights to tree lights our galleries are aglow
So children everywhere will say "We can't wait to go!"

Thank You Hershey Region AACA!
We would like to thank the Hershey Region AACA for their generous donation of $7,500 toward the 1962 Stageway Station Wagon Coach restoration project. With this donation, our current total raised is $11,347 for about 28% of our goal.

This is one of the original wagons used by the Milton Hershey School students in the late 60s and early 70s. The wagon requires extensive restoration to return to its original condition. The AACA Museum will work with the Pennsylvania College of Technology in Williamsport, PA, to complete this restoration as a student project. We continue to raise funds for the restoration via our web page for those individuals and organizations who share our vision of giving this regional piece of history new life.

The Manhattan was the Mack brothers' first truck. Introduced in 1905, the five-ton truck was designed to haul commodities such as coal, building materials and food stuff. The driver's seat was over the engine. Mack's first commercial vehicle was a bus built in 1900 for sightseeing in New York.
