Hershey! Hershey! Hershey!
By Stacy Zimmerman, Speedster editor

Well, it's that time of year again... It's Hershey time! As I was putting together this issue of the Speedster, I noticed almost all of the content had something to do with the Hershey Fall Meet, so I've decided to nickname this the "It's All About Hershey" issue.

While we here at Headquarters are always excited about the 15-20 National meets and tours each year, Hershey is just different (in a super positive way, of course!). I would make the analogy that Hershey is to the antique car hobby as Madonna is to the music industry - an icon. Heck, they are both referred to by using just one word and everyone knows what you are talking about!

Trying to describe Hershey to someone who has never attended is difficult - try it... You can explain how BIG the show is - 9,000 vendor spaces in the flea market, 1,000 cars in the car corral, 1,300 collector cars in the car show, 250,000 visitors - but without actually seeing it it's really hard to image. Kind of like when you see photos of the Grand Canyon, it's beautiful, but when you actually are standing there looking at it with your own eyes, it's breathtaking.

You can tell people about all of the special activities like the vintage race car conditioning run and high-wheeler event or the evening activities like the AACA Museum's TorqToberFest and RM Sotheby's Collector Car Auction. You can share the stories of all of the great characters you've met at Hershey and all of the amazing cars you've seen, but I really feel like Hershey is just one of those things that everyone needs to experience for themselves at least once.

Hershey memories are the best - good or not-so-good, rain or sunshine, calm or crazy, old or new - they all make Hershey... well, Hershey. Right?!

Do me a favor... If you are coming to Hershey next week, bring along someone who has never been to the show before and share your Hershey experience with them. Then, after you get home, email me one of your favorite experiences from this year or a comment from your guest about what they thought of Hershey. I will publish any responses I get in the October issue of the Speedster.

The Hagerty® Swap to Street Challenge: Search. Build. Drive.

We've always said we could build a car just from parts found at the Hershey Swap Meet. This year, we're putting that theory to the test. Four Hagerty employees have four days to rebuild a '46 Ford pickup using parts sourced at the Hershey Swap Meet, then drive it home to Traverse City, Michigan.

Click here to visit the Hagerty® Swap to Street Challenge website where you can read how the Challenge came about, how they found the chassis for the build and what the plan of action entails.

Click here to meet the team. And check out this video about the project.

Hagerty's car build will be at the Chocolate Field South, spaces CCW 61-73. If you are going to Hershey, make sure to stop by to see their progress in person. Anyone can keep tabs on the team's headway during the four days at Hershey by watching the livestreaming video

Will they make it?

'30 Hudson and 78-year-old Driver to Stop at Hershey During Global Tour
By Angelo Van Bogart, Editor, Old Cars Weekly (article shared from www.oldcarsweekly.com)

Heidi Hetzer, the 78-year-old German woman who has been driving her 1930 Hudson around the world for the last 13 months, will make a pit stop at the AACA Eastern Division National Fall Meet in Hershey, Pa., from Oct. 7-10. During the AACA meet, Hetzer will call the Hudson-Essex-Terraplane Club's booth her home and speak on two occasions.

Even with a recently broken hand - sustained while repairing her chariot - Hetzer is still raring to go, making the stop at Fall Hershey a rare moment when she lets her Hudson's engine cool.

"So far, I love driving," said Hetzer, who has 11 months to go until she returns to Berlin. "I cannot wait until the next day to drive. I am unhappy if I have a break down, and I really love every day driving. It's kind of a drug - I need it! I need to drive!"

Heidi Hetzer with her 1930 Hudson Great Eight
two-door sedan, which she's named "Hudo."
From behind the three-spoked steering wheel of her 1930 Hudson Great Eight two-door sedan, Hetzer has already seen some amazing places. She drove east from Berlin, hitting Vienna, Iran, Uzbekistan, China, Laos, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Australia, New Zealand and points between before hitting North America by way of Los Angeles. Since coming to the United States, she's been to the Grand Canyon then bounced between Canada and the United States, along the way stopping in Detroit where Hudson was based.

"I didn't really know what a good car I bought," Hetzer said. "I am just learning now what a great car [it is], and what great jobs the designers did and how intelligent they were. If you don't drive too fast, this car will last forever."

Hetzer admits that her Hudson is on its second engine, the first one conking out shortly after she left. She said that the original engine had been rebuilt 30 years and hadn't been specifically prepared for her journey. In fact, the Hudson wasn't bought until she began planning to drive around the globe.

The Hudson was found by Hetzer online, where it had been listed for sale over six years. She said in Germany, people want cabriolets (convertibles), "but I didn't want one. People in Germany don't know how good of a car it is. They want it open, to be seen. They want it to be a cabriolet. I have cabriolets, but I didn't want one [for this trip]."

The trip itself was inspired by Hetzer's hero, Clärenore Stinnes, an accomplished race car driver like Hetzer herself and who drove around the world from 1927 to 1929 at the age of 24. Although both women took to circumnavigating the globe, Hetzer is careful to draw comparisons between them.

"I am not going exactly the same route, I am 78 and she was 24, so that is why I don't drive longer, but I drive double the kilometers that she did. The routes are so much different. You cannot compare me with her because it was much, much more difficult [for her]."

Heidi Hetzer's 1930 Hudson packed to the
gills on her round-the-world journey.
Stinnes also completed her journey with the aid of a sponsor, two mechanics and a freight vehicle that followed with spare parts and equipment.

Meanwhile, Hetzer has only a riding companion, and now that her Hudson is an antique itself, she's encountering a whole new set of problems, and she doesn't seem to mind.

"People ask, 'Why are you going with an old car?' Because everybody goes with a new car, it is nothing special. I want to feel how the engine is ticking and how difficult it is to repair the car. It is very difficult. You find people that are good to know and people that have never seen an old car so they cannot help you much, but I learned to be a mechanic."

Oil and fuel have run through Hetzer's veins long before she took to driving around the world, and even racing cars. Her father owned an Opel dealership in Berlin, which she took over in 1970. Her own children weren't interested in taking over the business, so when Hetzer retired, she looked for an outlet. So far, driving around the world suits her perfectly.

"I sold my business and was out of a job, so what could I do? My children said, 'What will you do? You will die.' So I went around the world."

After Hetzer's stop in Hershey, she will proceed to Florida and then on to South America, skipping Cuba because of the long delays in getting her car to the island nation and also Mexico and Central America, due to the turmoil in those nations. From Patagonia, her Hudson will be shipped to South Africa from where she'll drive home to Berlin.

"I am slowing down because I am already getting close and getting sad," she said. "What am I going to do when I get home?"

When she gets home, she plans to take her grandchildren for rides in the old Hudson. She's also not ruling out another round-the-world trip.

AACA Library to Host 2nd Yard Sale During Meet Week in Hershey
Digital Catalogue Now Available for RM Sotheby's Hershey Sale

RM Sotheby's has announced final entries for its annual Hershey sale, October 8-9 in Pennsylvania, now on view in the complete auction digital catalogue. A feature attraction of the AACA Eastern Division Fall Meet, the Hershey Lodge auction features an outstanding roster of 148 automobiles, one classic boat, one motorcycle and select memorabilia.

This year's catalogue provides tremendous choice for collectors drawn to early automotive design and engineering, with star attractions led by:
  • A model rarely offered for public sale, the 1913 Pierce-Arrow Model 66-A Seven-Passenger Touring is one of just 14 surviving examples. The largest and most potent motor car produced at the time, it was acquired by the Minneapolis Fire Department in the early 1920s, as they moved from a horse-drawn to a motorized fleet. It has since been restored to original form, and, in recent years, successfully participated in more than a dozen long-distance tours (Est. $550,000 - $650,000).

  • An exceedingly rare 1914 Rolls-Royce 40/50 HP Silver Ghost Landaulette by Barker. Imported to the United States early in life, the Silver Ghost was purchased by Helen Brice, a member of one of the wealthiest East Coast families. Miss Brice used the car regularly until 1934, when she and chauffeur Francis Cox, thought it time to trade it in. Cox wrote a letter to Mr. Henry Ford, suggesting it be an appropriate addition to his new museum, to which Mr. Ford agreed, displaying the car at The Henry Ford until 1971. Expertly restored in 2004, it comes to auction as one of the finest surviving Silver Ghosts available (Est. $500,000 - $700,000).
The sale will also present two fascinating private collections, including the long hidden-away Richard Roy Estate Collection, and a selection of vehicles from the esteemed Harold Coker Collection:
  • Richard Roy of Branchville, New Jersey, was an attendee at the AACA Hershey Meet for almost four decades, and a businessman for whom no search was too far or too ambitious if it meant locating the right car or piece of automobilia. RM Sotheby's is honored to present his collection of 25 Early American and Classic Era cars at Hershey, which focuses on vehicles with local Sussex County, NJ or regional Pennsylvania ties, along with cars of particular originality or peculiarity.

  • A lifelong enthusiast well-known and respected in the global collector community, Harold Coker loved cars as long as he could remember. His own cars were exceptional; each one described as part of the family, and regularly shown and often highly awarded at AACA and HCCA events. This selection of 10 pre-1916 vehicles is led by a pair of Thomases, including a 1905 Flyer Five-Passenger Touring, the only example known to have survived intact.

In addition to the motor cars, RM's Hershey sale presents an eclectic group of highly important collectibles and automobilia, offered entirely without reserve. Stand out highlights include:
  • a trio of hand-built, fully functional steam-powered Stanley models;
  • two original Peter Helck drawings depicting pivotal moments in motoring history; and,
  • a hard-to-find 1915 Pierce-Arrow Model 66-A-3 Engine, a fine spare or display piece for any collector of the Brass Era marque.

Fall Meet Origins
By Matthew Hocker

Here at the AACA Library, we've been gearing up for this year's Hershey Fall Meet. The event is one of the largest of its kind, attracting visitors from all over the world. Since this year marks the 80th anniversary of AACA, we thought it might be fun to dive into the early history of the Fall Meet.

Hershey wasn't always the home for the Fall Meet. Way back in 1946, the venue chosen was the horse showgrounds in Devon, PA. One of the reasons Devon was chosen was its close proximity to Philadelphia, the club's headquarters at the time. The final meet in Devon was held in 1953 and attracted over 200 cars.

By then, the club felt the event would quickly outgrow the showgrounds and that a new venue was necessary. The successor chosen was Hershey, the birthplace of America's favorite chocolate bar. AACA President S. Howard Brown was instrumental in the decision. He was friends with the President of the Hershey Estates and convinced him to allow the club to hold their event on company grounds.

The first Hershey Fall Meet was hosted by the Pottstown Region in 1954, and the event's success spurred the formation of the Hershey Region in 1955. Back then, the show was confined to the Hershey stadium, only seven vendors were present, and there were around 300 registered cars. Turnout would have been higher, but a number of people avoided travel due to bad weather caused by Hurricane Hazel on Friday, October 15th

By the weekend, the skies had cleared and the fun began. Many people attended in period clothing, and there were a number of contests and challenges for antique cars to participate in. Atlantic Petroleum even had a 1920 White truck on-hand, a means of promoting its nearby gas station.

Word spread, and the meet continued to grow rapidly, expanding into the field outside the stadium (today, this area is mostly paved). There were 916 cars registered for the 1963 event, there were over 2,000 registered by 1985, and the number of vendors swelled into the thousands over the years.  Attendance remains so high that the Hershey Fall Meet becomes like its own small city the second week of each October.

While the size and scope of the Hershey Fall Meet have significantly changed since 1954, its heart and soul have remained the same. In his book, Hershey: World's Greatest Antique Car Event, Rich Taylor described it best... "You'll see hundreds of people looking almost impossibly, effervescently alive. Their eyes sparkle, their cheeks have a ruddy glow, they're enjoying themselves as only happy, excited pilgrims can enjoy themselves, knowing they're in the Center of the Universe."
