Model A Pickup

Submitted by: Walt Kostrzewa

Although we have been proud owners of our 1928 Model A Roadster Pick-up for only six years now, my pride of ownership was born many years ago.

I've always been a "car guy" influenced by the long line of Fords in our family including many Model A's.  This influence came from my Dad, an original "old car guy" who first introduced me to the Model A Ford about 65 years ago (I'll be 66 this year). Needless to say, it was at a very early age.

My first memory of a Model  A  was riding on the "tractor with two steering wheels."  At the age of 18 my Dad built a tractor from old Model A parts and later on would use it for...(Click here for the full story.)

Library & Research Center

The Library now has a YouTube Channel

 By:  Mike Reilly

If you couldn't make it to the Annual Meeting in Philadelphia earlier this month, you missed out on our presentation detailing the multimedia offerings of the library.  The presentation primarily covered our 35mm still filmstrips and 16mm films that we have available for public viewing.  All of these multimedia items are available on site to anyone who wants to view them, but what about those who can't make it out to Hershey? Well, we've come up with a solution...YouTube.

Over the course of the past month, I have been recording some of our 16mm films by setting up a video camera and running the sound directly from the film projector into the camera.  Some touch ups to the audio were required as some of the films are in better condition than others (both in video and sound quality), but the end result is an ever growing YouTube Channel that allows everyone to view these films and videos from the comfort of their own home.

There are many different areas of interest covered on our channel.  We have many Jam Handy films from the 1940's and 50's that were made for Chevrolet.  There are also car specific videos on the 1965 Ford Mustang and another on the 1965 Lincoln Continental. Be sure to check out "The Car of Your Dreams," as it features an assortment of entertaining commercials and promotional clips of various automakers from the 40's on up to the early 1980's. Videos from past Fall Meets in Hershey have also been uploaded and contain some great looks into the history of AACA.  These old club related films are a great watch and we are continuing our search for other films to record and upload for everyone to see.

If you would like copies of any of these videos or others that have not been uploaded please contact us at the library and we can get it out to you as soon as possible.  If you have AACA or car films of your own that you would like copied, we can digitally copy them as part of your 1.5 hours of free research that you get per membership year.  A list of our films and videos can be found on the library home page.

We will continue to add videos to the channel so make sure you keep checking back and subscribe to us if you have a YouTube account of your own. You can find all of our videos by visiting us at http://www.youtube.com/user/TheAACALibrary.

Sirens of Chrome Exhibit Brings Automotive Sizzle to AACA Museum

for Women's History Month

They've been called models, sex symbols and eye candy...as well as informative, knowledgeable and engaging automotive specialists. The fascinating women of the auto shows and the progression of their role in selling cars is the focus of a new exhibit, Sirens of Chrome, opening March 1st at the Antique Automobile Club of America (AACA) Museum in celebration of women's history month.

Sirens of Chrome takes visitors on a visual joyride through auto show history and features a treasure trove of rare images of turn-of-the-century goddesses, 1950s sex symbols and today's highly trained product specialists. The exhibit showcases posters and photographs of human hood ornaments, fast cars and vintage auto show fashions.

"The talent at auto shows throughout the past century have actually gone though as much of an evolution as the cars themselves," said Lock Haven, PA native Margery Krevsky, founder and owner of Productions Plus-The Talent Shop, a nationwide go-to company that recruits, outfits and trains talent for auto shows, and author of the award-winning book, Sirens of Chrome: The Enduring Allure of Auto Show Models, which served as the muse for the exhibition. "Auto show models truly morphed from 'plaster to poster to person' and now serve as ambassadors of their brand who entice customers with facts and vehicle comparison information."

Following the format of the book, the Sirens of Chrome exhibit includes many historical photos that have been carefully culled from private collections, auto enthusiast portfolios and the National Automotive Historical Collection of the Detroit Public Library that tell the larger story of auto show models and the timeless allure of automobiles.

Attendees of the "Sirens of Chrome" exhibit will discover whose "body" inspired the Rolls-Royce hood ornament and who sat in a "rumble seat" with 1930s silver-screen goddess Joan Blondell. They will see the depth of information included from the Dagmar Bumpers, gawk at the over-the-top opulence of the Somali leopard pelt-upholstered 1950 Cadillac Debutante and view in wonder at the fur-clad model atop a Soviet-built Lada.

In total, the exhibit features nearly 75 pieces, some of which are photographs, posters, auto show programs and automobile magazine covers. Also on display will be auto show apparel courtesy of Production Plus-The Talent Shop, which has its own wardrobe department with an in-house fashion design team that creates original fashions for its clients and often tours a collection of vintage auto show fashions.

"Sirens of Chrome" Wine and Cheese Reception and Book Signing

Margery Krevsky will be appearing at the AACA Museum on Thursday, March 6th as part of a special event that runs from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. As visitors arrive they can enjoy a wine and cheese reception with wine tasting provided by Cullari Vineyards, along with a preview of spring fashions provided by ME Too Boutique. Susquehanna Style magazine also will be on hand with their style wall as a sponsor of the reception. Krevsky will discuss the exhibit, sign copies of her book and display a collection of vintage auto show fashions beginning at 6:30 p.m. Advance reservations and a $10 per person donation are requested to attend this reception via 717-566-7100 ext. 100 or AACAMuseum.org/Sirens-of-chrome. "Sirens of Chrome" the book is available online at SirensOfChrome.com, Amazon.com, MomentumBooks.com and at BarnesandNoble.com. The AACA Museum retail store will have a small quantity of books available for purchase on a first-come, first-served basis.
