Labors Of Love

My Dad, Charlie Reynolds, of little old Moosup, Connecticut, has restored cars for years, some to try to make a profit and some just for himself. I can remember growing up and coming home to see a newer model car in our garage, with a jack holding the front end up off the floor, my Dad planning on fixing the car, so we would have  a newer car without the new car payment.  Yankee Ingenuity! As an only child of a mechanic, and a girl, I spent a lot of time in the garage with my dad "helping " with various projects.  To this day body filler evokes memories of that time.

January Member Story Submission Before I was born my father, newly married, bought a car for his new wife. Of course this car needed some "work", but seeing how it was a 1963 split window coupe Corvette, how could he resist? This car, now a classic, was my parents everyday car for a while when they were first married.  When he got it, it had some front end damage and was a green color.  One of my favorite stories is my parents picking me up at the hospital and taking me home in this car.  How many people have that kind of beginning?  And to think my mother held me in the front, as of course there is no back seat! They still have this car to this day and enjoy going to local cruise nights.

Flash forward to my teenage years, when I now needed a car.  My dad, ever the thrifty Yankee, hears about my future sister-in-law's car, a Mustang, that has body damage and a seized engine.  My Dad purchases the car for $200 and promptly gets to work, rebuilding the engine and fixing the body damage.  Not a classic by any means, but I loved my 1978 Mustang and drove it for about 4 years.  It is a Mustang II, with a white hard top and a beautiful jade green color.  I started at college and the car was starting to get old, so my Dad then rebuilt a Dodge truck for me, and we retired the Mustang.  On my way to college when I passed the trucks with flattened cars, I always promised her she would not end up like that.  Well, my Dad held my promise up and restored her to her former glory and then some.

Blogging the Unusual, Whimsical Side of Automobiles

By: Mike Reilly and Matthew Hocker

Dodge Christmas Record

Here at the Library, we often encounter pieces in our collection that stick out from the average sales brochure.  These artifacts cause us to pause for a second and think, "Well, that's weird and interesting."  Among our recent discoveries were items like a musical postcard (playable on a record player),  vintage pictures of members donned up in historically accurate outfits and a roller coaster-like contraption which flipped stunt cars in the air.  Instead of keeping interesting finds like these to ourselves, we decided to share them with the entire world.

 Enter Tumblr:

1922 Ford Model
Tumblr.com is a micro blogging social media website that is geared towards sharing pictures and short blog posts, making it a perfect match for our above-mentioned goal.  In effect, writing for a blog is much like writing in a personal journal or creating a scrapbook.   However, blogging allows one to share their ideas and discoveries with folks from all corners of the Earth.  In addition to serving AACA members, our blog doubles as a platform for sparking interest in the hobby among groups who might not otherwise give us a second look.  In fact, they sometimes become collaborators by sharing their unusual finds with us!

How Your Club Can Help Defend Our Great Hobby

by: Colby Martin, SEMA Action Network (SAN) Director

Colby

SAN DecalOur automotive hobby is impacted daily by legislation issued at the national, state and local levels.  Some laws are hobby-friendly but many, if not most, are not.  As vehicle enthusiasts, we must use every opportunity to impact laws which will set the future course for our country and our pastime.  To this end, the SEMA Action Network (SAN)-SEMA's grassroots lobbying network-offers proven legislative solutions.

You and your fellow club members are invited to learn how to help this important cause.  Together, we can defend our hobby and protect our automotive passion for this generation and generations to come!  Please plan to have your region or chapter represented at this seminar.  For those who cannot attend, you are invited to individually enlist online at www.SEMAsan.com/Join free of charge.  Thank you for helping fight the good fight!
