1930 Pontiac Deluxe Sedan Unearthed in the Gold Country

By Member Russell Noble

It was in the mid 1960's, in Columbia Hill, California, when logger Don Cook spotted a car sitting under the collapsed roof of a decaying garage. Curious, he drove down the gravel road and saw what appeared to be an old 1930 Pontiac. Like the garage, the car was in pretty rough shape from years of neglect. Interested none the less, Don approached the owner; an elderly gentleman named Gander and offered to buy the car. Mr. Gander was not interested as he said he bought the car new and wanted to keep it. A few years later Don was on his way home from Nevada City, California when he once again passed the gravel road to the Gander house. Undaunted and curiously persistent, he thought he would see if the old guy had a change of heart. This time it was Mrs. Lillian Gander who came to the door and told Don that her husband had passed away.  Fortunately, since her main home was in Berkeley, Ca. she was happy to have the wreck disposed of. Don paid an astonishing $6.00 to take it away.

Library & Research Center

Here at the Library, we periodically shelf-read our books to ensure they are in the correct location and order.  As a bonus, this process reacquainted us with titles in our collection that might have otherwise gone forgotten.  One such example was tucked away on a bottom shelf, hidden from those who walked by.  Wedged between other titles on the shelf and no more than half-an-inch in width, it was unassumingly small.  Freeing the book from its confines revealed an unusual image of a Victorian-era girl behind the wheel of an early car, accompanied by an excited looking little pooch, entitled, Alice in Motorland.

Published in 1904 as an automotive themed spoof of Lewis Carroll's timeless tale, Alice in Wonderland (1865), Horace M. Wyatt's eighty page tale first appeared in "The Car Illustrated" as a serialized set of short stories.  Said magazine's founder and editor was none other than British aristocrat and early motor enthusiast Lord Montagu of Beaulieu (John Douglas-Scott-Montagu).  Motorland's wonderful, whimsical black and white illustrations were penned by artist Charles A. Sykes, a close friend of Montagu and the sculptor behind Rolls-Royce's iconic mascot, the "Spirit of Ecstasy" (also known as the "Flying Lady").
