Autumn Greetings!

We hope you and your families have safely weathered the remnants of hurricane Sandy!

Life often brings times of great uncertainty and difficulties. it's through these times that we learn to lean more heavily on our Heavenly Father, and to trust in his promises.

Psalm 46:1-3 comes to mind:

"God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way
and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea,
though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging."

God Bless,

The Life Christian Counseling Family

Recap from Dr. Everett Worthington Event

On September 22nd, we had the sincere pleasure of partnering with Largo Community Church to host the world's foremost expert on forgiveness, Dr. Everett Worthington.

Dr. Worthington's work focuses largely on the emotional, psychological and physical effects that the process of forgiveness can have on us. A capable and commanding speaker, Dr. Worthington's workshop was informative and helpful to both counselors and those struggling with issues surrounding forgiveness in their own lives.

Crowd
Our attendees were individuals coming to learn more about forgiveness, and many counselors who came to learn information to be able to help their clients.

Word from the Director

I was so blessed and encouraged by Dr. Worthington's workshop. His wisdom and personal experience, combined with this remarkable research, has shed an entirely new light on forgiveness for me! I wanted to briefly share with you some of the points Dr. Worthington made at the event.

What Forgiveness is NOT
  • Not Forbearance
  • Not Condoning
  • Not Reconciling
  • Not Forgetting
  • Not Justifying
  • Not Getting Justice
  • Not Excusing

So then what IS forgiveness? Dr. Worthington used the acronym R-E-A-C-H to illustrate the steps necessary to achieve emotional forgiveness of a partner:

  • R - Recall the hurt (not to blame your partner, but to reinforce the objective of forgiveness)
  • E - Empathize with the one who hurt you (emotionally replace the negative feelings with positive ones)
  • A - Altruistic gift of forgiveness (think of a time you were forgiven, and how it made you feel)
  • C - Commit to forgive (say it out loud)
  • H- Hold onto forgiveness during doubt (feeling angry or scared does not equal "unforgiveness"; it's the body's way of telling you to be careful because you've been hurt before)

If you're interested to learn more about Dr. Worthington's work, watch this video of Dr. Worthingon explain in detail his R-E-A-C-H steps:
