 The press has done a good job lately of describing what happens to people and their families when an unplanned need for long-term care (LTC) arises. This Reuters article reports there are currently nearly 15 million unpaid family caregivers in the US. Roughly half of them give substantial assistance with medical needs. Compared with non-caregivers, these people are 79 percent more likely to experience emotional difficulty and more than twice as likely to experience financial and physical problems of their own. They are more than five times as likely to miss out on important activities in their own lives and more than three times as likely to suffer lost productivity at work.
