Parents and Appointed Education Advocates:

All of the staff at Families Together hope that you had a safe and fun summer with your children or young adults. If you are an education advocate for a student, this is a great time to reconnect and make sure their year gets off to a great start.

KanCare

Kansas has introduced a new online Customer Self-Service Portal (CSSP) to provide a quicker and easier way to check eligibility for medical benefits and allows Kansans to apply for benefits. Benefits could be processed within days of applying and providing complete and verifiable information. Kansas is encouraging all families and individuals to use the online application, although a paper application is still available.

Families Make
the Difference

Families Together, Inc. founded in 1982, serves as the Parent Training and Information Center and Family to Family Health Information Center for Kansas and provides opportunities for families to come together and meet other families who are navigating the special education and disability services maze.  Each year, Families Together, Inc. provides, without fees, direct support to thousands of Kansas families.  In addition, through workshops, conferences and partnerships with state, local and national organizations, Families Together provides training to more than 1,000 families and professionals working with children and youth with disabilities and special health care needs.

Positive Behavior Supports

Positive Behavior Support (PBS) is a general term used to describe an approach that aims to decrease challenging behavior and teach new appropriate skills. This method can be used at the individual student level or systematically at the school level. See  page 1.

Family Story

About this time last year my life was a total mess. I had lost my job; my health was failing due to stress and high blood pressure. Depression was slowly settling in, a bad situation was about to get worse. I didn't know how I was going to make ends meet.

Family Employment Awareness Training

To celebrate National Disability Employment Month, Families Together, Inc. and Kansas Secondary Connections (KSSC) are partnering to host the 3rd annual Families Employment Awareness Training (FEAT) on Oct. 18-19 in Topeka.

Center for Online Learning and Students with Disabilities

The Center for Online Learning and Students with Disabilities at the University of Kansas is looking to find ways to improve the processes and understandings that are held about fully online learning.

Because fully online learning potentially alters the parent's role in their child's education, we are looking to learn more about what parents are doing during this educational approach.

Education Advocate

The school year is upon us in full force. This is an extremely busy time for the staff who work on the education advocate program. A recurring problem this time of year is that children and youth have been moved to different homes and schools and we have not been notified. We strive to have an education advocate who resides in the same county in which the student resides and/or attends school, making communication and participation easier for all See page 4.
