Back to School for the Child with Learning Disabilities
Gearing up for a new school year can be challenging for students. After a few months of sleeping in, leisure activities, maybe even extra time with mom or dad, few kids are eager to wake up bright and early and spend the day in a classroom. This transition from summer to school can be particularly difficult for students with learning disabilities (LD). "Transitions can be exciting and also stressful," says Sheldon Horowitz, Ph.D., Director of Professional Services for the National Center for Learning Disabilities (NCLD).

Using Visual Supports with Infants and Toddlers

Visual supports are a form of adaptation that uses visual cues to allow infants and toddlers, and older children, to participate in activities and routines. Because infants and toddlers may find it difficult to communicate using words, visual supports can provide them with a system for communication while also teaching them important daily activities and routines. Visual supports provide supplemental information, cues, and directions to children who may communicate with behavior or are unable to read.

SSI Disability Fact Sheets
SSI stands for Supplemental Security Income, a need-based program for low-income and low-asset individuals who have a disability. Adults and children who have conditions that severely limit their daily activities can apply for SSI. These fact sheets answer frequently asked questions about applying for SSI. The set of fact sheets provide important information for child or adult disability benefits. Each fact sheet includes the definition of disability, information about the SSI program, and other important information about state and local medical assistance. The fact sheets also include links to the online applications.

Frequently Asked Question
"My child moved to a new school district during an initial special education evaluation process. What is the responsibility of my new school district?"
A school district must complete an evaluation, determine eligibility and begin special education services within 60 school days upon written parental consent. If a child changes school districts before the initial evaluation has been completed, the new school district must complete the evaluation, determine eligibility and begin special education services within the 60 school days. Unless, the new district is making sufficient progress to ensure prompt completion and the district and the parent agree to a specific alternate time for completion. In addition, the sending and receiving school entities must make sure that the assessments of children who change school districts during the school year are coordinated as quickly as possible to ensure prompt completion of full evaluations.
