About Us
The Mesa Verde Association is a joint membership program of the Mesa Verde Museum Association and the Mesa Verde Foundation. Your MVA membership supports both of these 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations.

The Mesa Verde Museum Association (tax ID 84-1404606) provides educational and interpretive material to visitors of Mesa Verde National Park through an active publishing program and the operation of retail bookstores online, in the park, and in Cortez, CO. Our services enhance the visitor experience and promote stewardship of Mesa Verde's world-renowned archeological resources and natural landscapes. Proceeds from all Association operations are donated to the park's interpretive, research, and education programs.

Mesa Verde Foundation (tax ID 84-046967)
funds capital improvements, projects, and
programs for Mesa Verde National Park. Our projects include partial funding for the new Visitor and Research Center at the park's entrance, rehabilitation of the horse facilities at Morefield to support the park's historic horse patrol, funding for important stabilization work at Cliff Palace, and funding of a Lecture Series at Mesa Verde.

Mesa Verde Holiday Open House
Mesa Verde National Park invites the public to help kick off the National Park Service Centennial with two special evenings in December. On Wednesday, December 9, 2015, Mesa Verde National Park welcomes photographers to capture the illumination of Cliff Palace, the largest cliff dwelling in the park, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. On Thursday, December 10, 2015, Mesa Verde National Park will host the 2015 Annual Holiday Open House from 4:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. in the Chapin Mesa headquarters area. Both events are free and open to the public.

December 9 will mark the first time Cliff Palace has been lit since 2006. At Sun Temple, visitors can view Cliff Palace illuminated from across the narrow canyon. Rangers will be present to answer any questions.

On December 10, the annual holiday celebration will feature musical entertainment and refreshments. Farolitos will glow along the pathways throughout the headquarters area and around Sun Temple Overlook. Both Cliff Palace and Spruce Tree House will be illuminated, and can be viewed from Sun Temple Overlook and the rim of Spruce Tree Canyon, respectively. Visitors should plan to park at the old Far View Visitor Center parking lot. Free shuttle buses will take visitors from the Far View area to Chapin Mesa Museum and Sun Temple Overlook. Dress warmly and bring a flashlight. Visitors are discouraged from bringing camera stabilization devices to Sun Temple Overlook on December 10.

The Chapin Mesa Archeological Museum will remain open until 9:00 p.m. There will be musical entertainment as follows:

The non-profit Mesa Verde Museum Association's Museum bookstore will be open highlighting the sale of books, replica pottery, puppets, historic photographs, and great holiday gifts including a new poster and notecards featuring artwork by Mesa Verde Artist in Residence Jan Wright. Bring your gift list along to take advantage of this special occasion. Proceeds benefit Mesa Verde National Park.

Applications Due December 31, 2015 for Mesa Verde National Park's 2016 Artist-in-Residence Program
Quilt by Carol Watkins
Applications for Mesa Verde's 2016 Artist-in-Residence (AIR) program are now being accepted through December 31, 2015. Writers, composers, visual and performing artists are offered the opportunity to pursue their particular art form while being surrounded by the inspiring ancient architecture of the Ancestral Pueblo people and the sweeping natural landscape of the park. Works completed under this program contribute to the public understanding and appreciation of our national parks, create a legacy preserved for future generations, and offer park visitors and the public an opportunity to see our heritage through the eyes and ears of the contributing artists.

The park provides a fully furnished historic residence to selected artists for five two-week periods: May 2 through May 15; May 16 through May 29; September 5 through September 18; September 19 through October 2; and October 3 through October 16, 2016. Participating artists are to present a public program during their residency and are to donate to the park a professional digital image of an original piece of work representative of their residency. Participants provide their own food as well as transportation to and in the park. No stipend is provided.

Full application instructions and program details are available at www.nps.gov/meve/getinvolved/artists_in_residence.htm. Submit all application materials and the $30 application fee, postmarked by December 31, 2015, to AIR Coordinator, Mesa Verde Museum Association, P.O. Box 38, Mesa Verde National Park, CO 81330. For more information, please contact the MVMA office at 970-529-4445 or info@mesaverde.org.

The AIR program is managed by the nonprofit Mesa Verde Museum Association (MVMA), the park's innovative educational partner that inspires life-long stewardship of the Mesa Verde region's cultural and natural heritage. Through MVMA's operation of park bookstores, free or low-cost seminars, workshops, lectures, and special programs, visitors of all ages gain a new, behind-the-scenes understanding of Mesa Verde. Proceeds from all association programs support Mesa Verde National Park. Learn more at www.mesaverde.org.
Mesa Verde Foundation Named an Enterprise Zone Contribution Project

The Mesa Verde Foundation has been approved as an Enterprise Zone Contribution Project by the Colorado Economic Development Commission (EDC). This designation allows any donor contributions at $250 or more to be eligible for a 25% Colorado state tax credit on cash donations, and a 12.5% state tax credit on in-kind donations such as professional services.

MVF helps raise funds for the projects and programs at Mesa Verde National Park. As a federal property, the park is not allowed to raise funds for itself and therefore depends on financial assistance for many critical needs including preservation efforts for Cliff Palace.

In 1986, the Colorado State Legislature approved the Enterprise Zone Tax Credit program to assist economically distressed areas of the state. In Southwest Colorado, all of Montezuma, San Juan, and Dolores Counties are designated enterprise zone areas. La Plata County and Archuleta Counties have some areas that are not considered distressed, and thus not included. New boundaries have been approved and go into effect on Jan. 1, 2016.

A list of eligible Enterprise Zone projects and program information is available online at www.scan.org or by calling the Region 9 Economic Development District at 970-247-9621. To learn more about the Foundation please visit: www.mesaverdefoundation.org.

Staff Transition
The Mesa Verde Museum Association (MVMA) announces with regret the resignation of Laurel Rematore, the Executive Director of MVMA since 2008. Ms. Rematore's tenure with the Mesa Verde Museum Association ends December 31, 2015. She will assume the role of Executive Director of Great Smoky Mountains Association on January 4, 2016. MVMA has benefited from her expertise and leadership skills for the past seven years.

Over the course of her tenure as Executive Director, she and MVMA personnel worked with the National Park Service to help design and create a new Visitor and Research Center at the entrance to Mesa Verde National Park. Under Rematore's leadership MVMA also has increased its visibility in Durango as well as maintaining its presence in the Montezuma County communities that surround the park.

With her financial acuity and experience leading through difficult times, Rematore improved MVMA's financial standing and provided membership support to the Mesa Verde Foundation, the park's capital fundraising partner, through a joint membership program aimed at promoting stewardship of the park. Rematore provided solid leadership during the 2013 federal government shutdown. Over the past years, she strengthened MVMA's ties with local community organizations in Montezuma County and expanded visitor services in Cortez by instituting sales of the park's ranger-guided cliff dwelling tour tickets at the Colorado Welcome Center where MVMA maintains a storefront.

MVMA's board of directors thanked Rematore for many years of excellent leadership of the association, noting that she leaves in place a solid partnership with the Park and an organization in a strong financial position to continue its support of the mission of Mesa Verde National Park. The board wishes her success in her new role.

The MVMA board of directors will begin a formal search for her replacement over the course of the next two months. Requests for information may be addressed to Jay Harrison, MVMA's board president, at Harrison@hood.edu or 970-529-4445.
