Rims to Ruins 2015 Tickets Available Now
Sun Point Panorama by Buffalo Kaplinski
Rims to Ruins 2015, an art exhibition and sale of small works, will be held on Saturday, November 7, 2015, at 6:00 p.m. at the Kent Denver School in Cherry Hills, Colorado.

This year marks an important step in broadening the scope of the show. Rather than being limited to Mesa Verde and its environs, artists can paint anywhere within the four states that comprise the Four Corners region. The show promises to be a stunning display of Southwestern art! Approximately twenty-five artists will be represented at the event, including many nationally renowned western painters and sculptors.

Entrance to the art exhibition, sale, and reception is $50 per person. Thirty dollars of the price is tax deductible. If you are interested in more information, would like to make a reservation to this important fundraiser, or would like to make a donation to support Mesa Verde National Park, please call: Margie Deane Gray at 303-321-3120 or email at info@mesaverdefoundation.org.

Contact Margie no later than October 29, 2015, to reserve your place at the event. You can also register on the Mesa Verde Foundation Facebook page or on their website at www.mesaverdefoundation.org. Your participation helps preserve the park for future generations. We look forward to seeing you there!
Free Performance by Marilyn Kroeker and Sweetwater Station
Musician and vocalist Marilyn Kroeker is serving as Mesa Verde National Park's final 2015 Artist in Residence from September 28 through October 11, 2015. Marilyn and her band Sweetwater Station will give a free public performance on Wednesday, October 7 at 5:30 p.m. in the Far View Lodge lounge, upstairs from the Metate Room, in Mesa Verde National Park.

Marilyn is spending her residency exploring the park and making music with her bandmates Chris Rasmussen, Raymond Rose, and Paul Berkowitz. All members compose for the band, and Marilyn has recorded four CDs to date. "We certainly hope our local fans will visit us in this setting. We expect to have some new material from the residency ready. Just knowing we are going is an inspiration," said Marilyn. "We look forward to reflecting our experience musically."

Sweetwater Station has been together for two years. They are distinctive primarily for their female vocal duo. The vocalists are accompanied by solid bass and lead mandolin. They play regularly throughout the region, and have performed on the main stage at Mancos, Dolores, and Cortez festivals this year as well as The Tavern on Elm Street and the Sunflower Theater.

This is the second time Marilyn has been chosen as a Mesa Verde Artist in Residence. In October 2009 she was awarded a residency for her watercolor work. In addition to her musical pursuits, Marilyn is a potter and the proprietor of Raven House Gallery in Mancos, CO.

Mesa Verde National Park's Artist in Residence program offers professional writers, composers, and visual and performing artists the opportunity to pursue their particular art form while being surrounded by the inspiring ancient architecture of the Ancestral Pueblo people and the sweeping natural landscape of the park. This year's Artists in Residence were selected from 45 applicants by a jury consisting of a Mesa Verde National Park ranger and three professional artists. Other 2015 Artists in Residence include photographer Jerry Fleury, musician/composer David Arkenstone, plein air artist Milt Beens, and saddle maker Lisa Skyhorse. Applications will soon be accepted for 2016 residencies. Learn more at www.nps.gov/meve/getinvolved/artists_in_residence.htm
Transportation Grant Funds Available for Local Students
Mesa Verde National Park recently announced the availability of transportation funding assistance for local schools who wish to bring students to the park. Mesa Verde was awarded a grant through the "Ticket to Ride" program, funded by the National Park Foundation with support from Disney. The Mesa Verde Museum Association and Mesa Verde Foundation are providing additional financial and administrative support.

Transportation funds are available for 3rd-8th grade classes from Cortez, Mancos and Dolores schools. Schools may apply for reimbursement of actual travel costs for a class visit to the park during the 2015-2016 school year. "Local schools often cite limited transportation funding as one barrier for field trips," said Jill Blumenthal, MVNP Education Coordinator. "We hope to remove that barrier, and encourage local teachers to bring their students to Mesa Verde."

Teachers have the option of scheduling an educational tour of Balcony House cliff dwelling. Educational tours will be conducted through October 15th, and will resume in April 2016. Teachers may also try out several new lesson plans developed in a partnership between Mesa Verde and Crow Canyon Archaeological Center. These place-based, standards-based lessons are written by educators and curriculum development specialists. The lessons are available for review and field testing by classroom teachers. Each lesson has a pre-visit activity, a field trip, and a post-visit component.

For further information on applying for funding, or to schedule a field trip, please email MEVE_Education@nps.gov, or call the MVNP Education Office at 970-529-5079.
Mesa Verde Welcomes 4th Grade Students through Every Kid in a Park Initiative
Have you heard? Mesa Verde National Park has invited all fourth grade students to visit the park for free as part of the White House's new Every Kid in a Park program. Starting September 1, fourth grade students can now go to www.everykidinapark.gov to complete an activity and obtain a free annual entry pass to more than 2,000 federal recreation areas, including national parks.

"During the National Park Service's centennial celebration, we want everyone to get to know their national parks, and we're offering a special invitation to fourth graders and their families to discover everything that national parks offer," said National Park Service Director Jonathan B. Jarvis. "We hope these free passes for fourth graders will introduce fourth graders, their classes, and families to our national treasures, places where they can run and play, explore and learn."

Mesa Verde National Park offers a variety of activities that fourth graders and their family can enjoy, including ranger guided tours of the cliff dwellings, bicycling on Wetherill Mesa, a self-guided junior ranger activity, or wildlife viewing.

To receive their free pass for national parks, fourth graders can visit the Every Kid in a Park website and play a game to access their special Every Kid in a Park pass. Fourth graders and their families can then use this pass for free entry to national parks and other federal public lands and waters across the country from September 1, 2015 through August 31, 2016. The website also includes fun and engaging learning activities aligned to educational standards, trip planning tools, safety and packing tips and other important and helpful information for educators and parents.

The goal of the Every Kid in a Park program is to connect fourth graders with the great outdoors and inspire them to become future environmental stewards, ready to preserve and protect national parks and other public lands for years to come. The program is an important part of the National Park Service's centennial celebration in 2016, which encourages everyone to #FindYourPark.

Every Kid in a Park is an administrative-wide effort launched by President Obama and supported by eight federal agencies including the National Park Service, the Army Corps of Engineers, Bureau of Land Management, Bureau of Reclamation, Department of Education, Fish and Wildlife Service, Forest Service, and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. "We're grateful to our partners for supporting the expedition, inspiring people from all backgrounds to explore and share their own unique connections to parks."
