Mesa Verde Soundscapes Receives Award

In May, former Mesa Verde National Park Artist in Residence Jill Haley's third National Park recording Mesa Verde Soundscapes won an award for "Best Piano Album with Instrumentation" at the Annual Zone Music Reporter event in New Orleans. The Zone Music Reporter tracks the airplay and programming of instrumental, ambient and new age music on radio stations and music services throughout the world. The voting panel was made up of radio programmers that work at these types of stations. The compositions on this recording were all inspired by Jill's 2013 Mesa Verde residency that was hosted by Mesa Verde National Park and the Mesa Verde Museum Association (MVMA).

Praise for Jill's Mesa Verde Soundscapes is plentiful. Jennifer Belfy of International Double Reed Journal states, "This is a thoughtful, well-performed acoustic music project that features Jill's sumptuous English horn playing as well as her oboe." Michael Diamond of Music and Media Focus writes, "Along with the gorgeous music, Jill's photos and her comments about them really add to the experience making it much more tangible than just hearing the songs. I have to commend Jill for her efforts to bring the treasures of our National Parks to awareness." One World Music observes that "Mesa Verde Soundscapes is a musical vista of outstanding natural beauty; this is one album that everyone needs in their collection." One World Music also interviewed Jill about her Mesa Verde recording; you can listen to that interview here: https://www.mixcloud.com/jill-hayley/

Jill recently finished a five-week artist in residency at Badlands National Park. She was able to immerse herself in the environment while she wrote new music inspired by the Badlands' desolate yet beautiful and haunting landscape. She will be presenting concerts in 2016 of music she wrote about the National Parks to celebrate the centennial of the formation of the National Park Service. Concert information will be listed at www.jillhaley.com

Spring House Benefit Ride

Mesa Verde Foundation is pleased to offer its second benefit ride within Mesa Verde National Park on September 10, 2015. Experience the spectacular views of the western part of the park as we ride a historic trail to Spring House, an unexcavated cliff dwelling. As you travel through majestic canyons and across tops of stunning mesas, you will find some of the hidden archeological wonders of Mesa Verde. Buzzard House, Daniels House, and many other sites greet you on your trek to Spring House. Spring House was built and inhabited by Ancestral Puebloans between A.D. 1195 and 1278. Named for an active spring found inside the site where water seeps out of the sandstone cliff, it provided needed sustenance to its inhabitants.

To register or for more information, send an email or call Ben Duke, Ride Coordinator for Mesa Verde Foundation, at 303-771-1555 or ben@mesaverdefoundation.org. The price of the ride is $500 per person of which $450 is a contribution to MVF. Riders may provide their own horses and be able to ride safely over rugged terrain and trails. Or, MVF has made arrangements for horse rentals through Rimrock Outfitters in Mancos; the rental cost will be $200 for the day. There is no stabling of horses in the park, but arrangements can be made to keep horses overnight at the Montezuma County Fairgrounds, just outside of Cortez. The ride will go, rain or shine.

We hope you'll be able to join the Mesa Verde Foundation for this unique adventure! All proceeds support Mesa Verde Foundation and Mesa Verde National Park.

Agreement Reached To Reduce Pollution Impacting National Parks in the Southwest
A lawsuit filed in 2011 has led to an agreement designed to reduce pollution impacting national parks throughout the Southwest, including Mesa Verde National Park. Additionally, the settlement reached with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the owners of the Four Corners Power Plant in New Mexico calls for $8.2 million in penalties and other mitigation costs. The settlement was announced on June 24 by the National Parks Conservation Association, which along with other organizations was represented by Earthjustice in the action.

Immerse yourself in painting among a watercolorist's brushes, palettes and paints. Study blacksmithing in a blacksmith's shop, among coal forges, gas forges, power hammers and anvils. This special environment will add to students' appreciation and enjoyment of their creative experience. Other classes will be held outdoors in the beautiful Mancos Valley, surrounded by mountains, forests, streams; all within view of Mesa Verde National Park.

Gregory McNamee guides you on a memorable tour through 50 national and state parks, monuments, and other cherished sites in the modern American Southwest. Simultaneously, he leads you far back in time, to the eras when the earliest human beings lived in what is now Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, and Utah.

These ancient people left intriguing clues: pueblos, tools, pottery, jewelry, baskets, petroglyphs, pictographs, clothing, kivas, and weavings. From such evidence, archaeologists can reconstruct sophisticated cultures with advanced knowledge of astronomy, architecture, agriculture, and art.

In more than 130 spectacular photographs, Larry Lindahl captures the essence of these remarkable locations, including Mesa Verde National Park, Canyon de Chelly National Monument, Navajo National Monument, Chaco Culture National Historic Park, Cedar Mesa National Monument, and many more.
