Mesa Verde National Park, San Juan Mountains Association, San Juan National Forest, BLM Tres Rios Field Office, San Juan/Four Corners Native Plant Society, Durango Nature Studies and Colorado Parks and Wildlife have teamed up to offer a series of winter hikes during the 2014-2015 winter season. Come enjoy the outdoors during this special time of year while exploring the local winter ecology. Learn more at www.sjma.org/education/classes/winter.htm

MVF Welcomes New Leadership

As I step into the position of Executive Director of the Mesa Verde Foundation, I eagerly look ahead to working with all of you to ensure that Mesa Verde National Park continues to be the jewel that it is well into the future.

In addition, I want to thank Ben Duke and his staff, Susan Bain-Schmidt and Susie Latendresse, for a job extremely well done. Through a great deal of hard work and dedication they have had tremendous success and have truly made a difference for the past four years. Their commitment to the mission of Mesa Verde National Park has created a solid foundation for the future of the park. We cannot thank them enough for everything they have done to ensure the foundation is on solid ground and the needs of the park will continue to be met. I look forward to following in their footsteps and expanding the reach and effectiveness of the foundation.

Speaking of the needs of the park, and there are many, the Mesa Verde Foundation and Mesa Verde National Park need your support now more than ever. With a constantly fluctuating economy, the well-being of the park is only as strong as the public's ongoing commitment. There is still a great deal for all of us to do--together.

As I get further into my new role, I will keep you apprised of the state of the park and how you, too, can make even more of a difference than you already have. I'd love for you to continue to be part of our team in any way you can.

Please join us to ensure the treasures of Mesa Verde National Park are available for future generations.

Warmly,

Margaret Deane Gray

Executive Director

Mesa Verde Foundation

Preservation Work at Cliff Palace To Impact Spring Ranger-guided Tour Schedules
Due to the complexity of preservation work to be completed at Cliff Palace this coming spring, Superintendent Cliff Spencer has announced that the site will not open for ranger-guided tours until Friday, May 22. "We hope to complete the first phase of the on-site preservation work before the Memorial Day weekend," said Spencer. Beginning May 22, summer schedules are expected to be very similar to past years' schedules. Additional work may be required after Labor Day, and may cause tour reductions on the fall tour schedules.

"We know this is a problem for some of our spring visitors," Spencer said. The park will schedule additional ranger-guided tours of Balcony House when possible to provide extra options for travelers. "This is the first really extensive stabilization work done at Cliff Palace since it opened to public tours almost 100 years ago," he said. "We have to ask everyone to stay flexible as we work to protect this incredible place." For the most up-to-date information, visit the park's website at www.nps.gov/meve or call 970-529-4465.

In May, 2011, archeologists discovered extensive cracks, wall deformation, and structural movement in the southern half of Cliff Palace. Park staff and experts from around the country have been working to document the character and extent of deterioration, and to develop a plan to carry out the required emergency stabilization. Special thanks to the Mesa Verde Foundation and the National Park Foundation for providing partial funding for the work.
Mesa Verde National Park Accepting Applications for Bicycle Rental Operation Commercial Use Authorization

Mesa Verde National Park will begin accepting applications for a Commercial Use Authorization (CUA) for bicycle rental operations on Wetherill Mesa in Mesa Verde National Park. The operation will also include stroller and wheelchair rentals.

The National Park Service (NPS) will issue up to one CUA authorizing a temporary bicycle rental operation located at the Wetherill Mesa parking area in Mesa Verde National Park. Under the CUA, the permittee will be authorized to rent bicycles to park visitors for use on approved roadways and trails on Wetherill Mesa. The permittee will be responsible for providing and maintaining all rental equipment necessary for the operation as well as temporary sales and storage facilities.

The CUA will be issued for an initial term of twelve months. The need for the CUA will be re-evaluated after the initial season. The NPS will utilize information and data collected during the term of this CUA to aid in the transportation plan for Wetherill Mesa and in determining how bicycle rental operations will be managed in the future.

A copy of the application and application instructions can be obtained by contacting the Mesa Verde National Park Concessions Management Division at 970-529-4613. In order to be considered complete, applications must be received by February 13, 2015 at 4:00 p.m. local time.

The NPS will review all applications received by the closing date and select the best qualified applicant to operate the bicycle rental.

For questions or additional information about the bicycle rental operation, please contact Dewey Higley, Concessions Management Specialist, at 970-529-4613.
