The Mesa Verde Association is a joint membership program of the Mesa Verde Museum Association and the Mesa Verde Foundation. Your MVA membership supports both of these 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations.

The Mesa Verde Museum Association (tax ID 84-1404606) provides educational and interpretive material to visitors of Mesa Verde National Park through an active publishing program and the operation of retail bookstores online, in the park, and in Cortez, CO. Our services enhance the visitor experience and promote stewardship of Mesa Verde's world-renowned archeological resources and natural landscapes. Proceeds from all Association operations are donated to the park's interpretive, research, and education programs.

The Mesa Verde Foundation (tax ID 84-046967) funds capital improvements, projects, and educational endeavors for Mesa Verde National Park. Our projects include construction of a new Visitor and Research Center near the park's entrance and remodeling the existing Far View Visitor Center into a Tribal Cultures Center to enhance understanding of the connection between the Ancestral Puebloans and contemporary Native American tribes.

What’s Ahead for MVF and MVMA

All of us at Mesa Verde Foundation (MVF) and Mesa Verde Museum Association (MVMA) hope that you had a wonderful holiday season. We are so very grateful for your continued, generous support of Mesa Verde. MVF has some exciting plans for 2014, including the second Rims to Ruins art exhibition and sale. Artists will be working in the park this coming May, and we will once again have an auction at that time. Then, we will host an exhibition and sale in Denver in November. Additionally, we will be working with the park on the Horse Patrol and a Native American Internship Program. MVF also is pleased to report that we successfully raised over $150,000 this past year for important stabilization work at Cliff Palace.

Mesa Verde Museum Association (MVMA) is currently accepting applications for the 2014 Artist-in-Residence program; see the companion article in this e-newsletter for details. This winter we are focusing on publications work, intent on returning Gustav Nordenskiold’s The Cliff Dwellers of the Mesa Verde to our shelves in 2014 after being out of print for several years. In partnership with the National Park Service, we are continuing to update and revise trail guides and translate them into German and French; the updated Balcony House trail guide will be available in those languages this coming spring. In 2014 we will also close out two multi-year Colorado State Historical Fund grants to perform stabilization work at Square Tower House and digital documentation (laser scanning) of Spring House.

We wish you a happy, healthy new year, and we hope you’ll visit Mesa Verde in 2014!

Free Winter Ecology Hike January 11

Park rangers will be leading a guided hike exploring the amazing ways that animals and plants survive in the cold winter environment of Mesa Verde National Park. The hike will tour the winter habitats of plants and animals in the Morefield Campground Area on Saturday, January 11, beginning at 9 a.m. The guided hike is free, but advance sign-up is required. Children should be at least 7 years old to join the hike. Participants will meet at the Morefield Village parking lot located four miles from the park entrance and then will explore the area around Morefield Campground, looking for signs of wildlife and observing winter adaptations of plants and animals. Be prepared to be outdoors for 2 to 3 hours with extra layers of clothing, water, and snacks. This hike is limited to 20 adults and children. If needed, snowshoes will be provided, or you may bring your own. To sign up, for weather conditions, and for more information about the hike, please call the Chapin Mesa Archeological Museum at 970-529-4631.

Mesa Verde National Park, San Juan Mountains Association, and the San Juan/Four Corners Native Plant Society have teamed up to offer a series of winter hikes during the 2013-2014 winter season. Come enjoy the outdoors during this special time of year while exploring the local winter ecology. Visit www.nps.gov/meve/planyourvisit for hike locations, descriptions, dates, and times.

Application Deadline Approaching for 2014 Artist-in-Residence Program

Applications for Mesa Verde National Park’s 2014 Artist-in-Residence (AIR) program are being accepted through January 27, 2014. Professional writers, composers, and visual and performing artists are offered the opportunity to pursue their particular art form while being surrounded by the inspiring ancient architecture of the Ancestral Pueblo people and the sweeping natural landscape of the park. The works completed under this program contribute to the public understanding and appreciation of our national parks, create a legacy preserved for future generations, and offer park visitors and the public an opportunity to see our heritage through the eyes and ears of the contributing artists.

The park provides a fully furnished historic residence to selected artists for five, two-week periods: May 5 through May 18; May 19 through June 1; September 1 through September 14; September 15 through September 28; and September 29 through October 12, 2014. Participating artists are to present a public program on the second Thursday of their residency, and are to donate to the park a professional digital image of an original piece of work from their residency. Participants provide their own food as well as transportation to and in the park. No stipend is provided.

Full application instructions and program details are available at www.nps.gov/meve/supportyourpark/artists_in_residence.htm. Submit all application materials and the $20 application fee, postmarked by January 27, 2014, to Jan Wright, AIR Coordinator, Mesa Verde Museum Association, P.O. Box 38, Mesa Verde National Park, CO 81330. For more information, please contact Jan Wright at 970-529-4445 or AIRCoordinator@mesaverde.org.
