The Mesa Verde Museum Association (tax ID 84-1404606) provides educational and interpretive material to visitors of Mesa Verde National Park through an active publishing program and the operation of retail bookstores online, in the park, and in Cortez, CO. Our services enhance the visitor experience and promote stewardship of Mesa Verde's world-renowned archeological resources and natural landscapes. Proceeds from all Association operations are donated to the park's interpretive, research, and education programs.

The Mesa Verde Foundation (tax ID 84-046967) funds capital improvements, projects, and educational endeavors for Mesa Verde National Park. Our projects include construction of a new Visitor and Research Center near the park's entrance and remodeling the existing Far View Visitor Center into a Tribal Cultures Center to enhance understanding of the connection between the Ancestral Puebloans and contemporary Native American tribes.

Popular "Hike and Bike" Events Return on September 14 and 28

Everyone is invited to Mesa Verde National Park's annual "Hike and Bike" events on Wetherill Mesa on September 14 and 28. Entrance fees will be waived for those participating. "Fall is a great time to enjoy the park, with cooler weather and the changing colors of autumn" said Superintendent Cliff Spencer. Wetherill Mesa is closed for the season after Labor Day, but will re-open for hikers and bicyclists on September 14 and again on September 28.

The Wetherill Mesa Road will open at 9:00 a.m., and close at 3:30 p.m. The Wetherill Mesa Road is located near mile 15 on the park road, just past Far View Lodge. From that junction, visitors are invited to drive 12 miles to the Wetherill Mesa information kiosk where the tram road begins. Hikers and bicycle riders can ride or hike along the 5.5 mile long tram loop road. Along the route, stop at Long House, the second largest cliff dwelling in the park; hike into Step House; explore Badger House Community; and hike to views of Kodak House, and Nordenskiöld #16. Park Rangers and volunteers will be available to answer questions and point out unique features of each site. All visitors must exit Wetherill Road by 4:30 p.m.

You may bring a picnic lunch and drinking water, or you may purchase lunch at the kiosk. "Last year's hike and bike was a great experience," said Superintendent Spencer. "We hope visitors and local community residents will join us again this year."

For safety's sake, bicycle riding is not allowed on the Wetherill Mesa Road itself, due to its narrow condition and lack of shoulders. Dogs are not permitted on the tram road. Riders and hikers should keep safety in mind at all times: bring plenty of drinking water and high energy snacks, sun and wind protection. Wetherill Mesa is about 7,240 feet above sea level. Mesa Verde Artist-in-Residence James Branaman to Speak on September 26

Artist-in-Residence James Branaman will give a free lecture featuring his photography, including never-before-seen images of the park from his residency project. The public is invited to attend his program on Thursday, September 26, 2013, at 7:30 p.m. at the Far View Lodge Library in Mesa Verde National Park.

The Florida-based photojournalist’s project focuses on combining two photographic techniques-- light painting and astrophotography--often spending several hours working on a single image in the backcountry at night.

Holding degrees in both art and photojournalism, Branaman combines artistic training with visual journalism to tell the story of places in the present and past. He worked on similar projects as an artist-in-residence at Rocky Mountain and Everglades National Parks in 2012 and will continue his project at Acadia National Park in 2014. Branaman states, "while most forms of physical exploration have been exhausted, we continue to break new ground in how we explore a place visually. Through this exploration I seek to create imagery focusing on scenes that elude the casual tourist or short-term visitor. In the process I hope to showcase the beauty and balance of man-made structures in natural settings while still preserving wilderness areas and dark skies."

Branaman will serve a two-week residency at Mesa Verde National Park in September 2013.

Fall Photography Multi-Day Workshop Filling Fast!

Just a few spaces remain in our premiere opportunity to learn to photograph the world-famous Ancestral Puebloan cliff dwellings at Mesa Verde National Park like a pro! To help you capture the best light and perspective of these remarkable structures in either digital or film cameras, MVMA is offering a special fall three-day photography workshop led by well known photographer and Northern Arizona University Professor Emeritus Dr. Gene Balzer.

This year the workshop is scheduled for October 11-13, 2013, and is limited to 13 participants to ensure plenty of personalized coaching. Tuition includes three days of instruction, two nights in-park motel lodging at the Far View Lodge, and all meals including two dinners at the famed Metate Room Restaurant. Participants will visit sites around the park at times designed to capture ideal lighting conditions, and will work on compositional skills for compelling images. The group will visit some archeological sites at hours when they’re closed to the general public, and will also visit Mug House and Oak Tree House, beautiful cliff dwellings that are not normally open for visitors. The Illuminated Desert by Terry Tempest Williams, illusrated by Chloe Hedden

The Illuminated Desert is a stunning dialogue in painting and prose by two daughters of the Colorado Plateau: Terry Tempest Williams and Chloe Hedden. This is more than an abecedarian, or alphabet book. It is an exquisite rendering of life in the red rock canyons of the southwest and the natural history that evokes a poetry of place. The audience for this book is the audience of the desert itself, from children to adults who share in discovery and delight.
