Mesa Verde Artist-in-Residence Sue King to Speak on September 12

On Thursday, September 12, 2013, textile artist Sue King from Lancaster, Ohio, will speak on her work as an art quilter and demonstrate the use of silk screening as a form of surface design. Participants can make a textile post card as a memento of their visit to the park, or screen a design on an item of their own clothing. The free event begins at 5:30 p.m. at the library downstairs at Far View Lodge, Mesa Verde National Park, and is open to all. Supplies will be provided but participants must bring their own item of clothing, such as a tee shirt, to screen if desired.
King has always been fascinated by history and enthralled with old photographs. Of her figurative work, composed entirely of textiles, King says,"I search for a way to connect our present experiences with those who came before. They call forth the ghost into the room." As a clinical social worker, King searches for connections with others, the commonalities of experience that define what it means to be human. Her current work focuses on themes of hardship, sacrifice and survival.
King will serve a two-week residency at Mesa Verde National Park in early September. She was selected by a jury of accomplished local artists, who lauded her vast number of presentations, publications, public collections, and solo exhibitions as well as the intricate quilting of portraiture as particularly noteworthy. More information about King is available at www.SueKingArts.com.

Happy 97th Birthday, National Park Service!

Mesa Verde National Park will celebrate the 97th birthday of the National Park Service on Sunday, August 25 by waiving the admission fee to Mesa Verde National Park and all other national parks.
"National parks belong to all Americans and offer something for everyone – so visit the park, take a hike, go on a tour or just take in the scenery," said Park Superintendent Cliff Spencer.
The National Park Service was established on August 25, 1916. The United States was the first country in the world to set aside its most significant places as national parks so that they could be enjoyed by all. Today, the NPS cares for 401 national parks throughout the country – each one an important part of our collective identity. Some parks commemorate notable people and achievements, others conserve magnificent landscapes and natural wonders, and all provide a place to have fun and learn something. Plan your visit at www.nps.gov/findapark.
The mission of the National Park Service extends beyond parks into communities across the country where it works with partners to help preserve local history and create close-to-home recreational opportunities that revitalize neighborhoods and enhance the quality of life. To see what the NPS does here in Colorado, go to www.nps.gov/CO.
Additional fee free days for 2013 for National Park Service units are: September 28 (National Public Lands Day), and November 9 to 11 (Veterans Day weekend).
Happy birthday, NPS!

Mesa Verde National Park has lifted fire restrictions which have been in effect since June 29, 2013. "Over the past couple of weeks, we have had some significant rain showers across the park that have reduced the fire danger,"; stated Superintendent Cliff Spencer.
Due to recent fire history and early fire season weather trends which indicated the possibility of a severe fire season, the park received 'severity fire resources' for the peak of the fire season. These firefighting resources included fire trucks and personnel from Acadia National Park, Canyon de Chelly National Monument, North Cascades National Park and the U.S. Forest Service.
"If the fire danger increases later in the season, restrictions may once again be implemented," stated Chief Ranger Farias.
