Mesa Verde Artist-in-Residence Siri Beckman to Demonstrate Relief Printmaking

Beckman_Pinnacle
Siri Beckman, Artist-in-Residence at Mesa Verde National Park, will give a free demonstration of her technique of cutting into wood in order to create an original print. The public is invited to attend her program at 1 p.m. on Thursday, May 16, 2013, at the Far View Lodge Library in Mesa Verde National Park.

Beckman creates her prints using two techniques--wood engraving and woodcut. Both are forms of relief printmaking. A mid-westerner by birth, Beckman moved to Maine in 1975 and discovered wood engraving by chance. Instantly drawn to the medium, she taught herself how to engrave in hard, dense woods like English boxwood and maple. In 1992 she received a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Arts in Philadelphia.

"Indigenous architecture has been a source of curiosity and inspiration for me for many years," says Beckman. "During my residency, I'll visit park sites with sketch book, watercolors and camera so I can record the details necessary to complete a series of prints."

Mesa Verde National Park's Artist-in-Residence (AIR) program provides professional artists the opportunity to become part of a long established tradition of artists creating art in our national parks. The AIR program is managed for the park by the Mesa Verde Museum Association. Learn more here.

Cliff Palace Stabilization Project Receives Generous Funding

Mesa Verde Foundation is pleased to report that it has received some significant funding for the Cliff Palace Stabilization Project that will help arrest slippage and potential collapse within part of this iconic ancient treasure. Grants from the Gates Family Foundation, the Anschutz Foundation, the Kenneth King Foundation, and several individuals have brought us to with $7,000 of our goal. Additionally, the National Park Foundation has successfully raised some significant funding for this project as well. Preservation of Cliff Palace is very important, and we are very pleased that these foundations and individuals have stepped up to help. Work within the archeological site should begin this summer. If you have questions or are interested in supporting the project, please contact Ben Duke at 303-321-3120 or email ben@mesaverdefoundation.org.

Mounted Ranger Program Receives Much-Needed Support

Thanks to generous gifts from the Heritage Trails Foundation of the Roundup Riders of the Rockies, the Chuckwagon Trail Riders Foundation, and Betty L. Robertson, Mesa Verde's historic Horse Patrol Program is set to "hit the trail" this summer. Renovations to the barn and corral area will take place, and through a generous gift from Mrs. Robertson, two new horses have been purchased for use in the park. As more back country areas are opened to the public, the National Park Service needs to have the ability to patrol areas both for security and safety. The Mounted Ranger program will allow that to take place.
