The Mesa Verde Museum Association (tax ID 84-1404606) provides educational and interpretive material to visitors of Mesa Verde National Park through an active publishing program and the operation of retail bookstores online, in the park, and in Cortez, CO. Our services enhance the visitor experience and promote stewardship of Mesa Verde's world-renowned archeological resources and natural landscapes. Proceeds from all Association operations are donated to the park's interpretive, research, and education programs.

The Mesa Verde Foundation (tax ID 84-046967) funds capital improvements, projects, and educational endeavors for Mesa Verde National Park. Our projects include construction of a new Visitor and Research Center near the park's entrance and remodeling the existing Far View Visitor Center into a Tribal Cultures Center to enhance understanding of the connection between the Ancestral Puebloans and contemporary Native American tribes.

Free Winter Ecology Hikes Continue This Month

Coyote in the snow
Join San Juan Mountains Association (SJMA) on Saturday, December 15 from 10:00 a.m. to noon for the second program in the Southwest Colorado Winter Ecology Series: a “Winter Discovery Walk for Families at Boggy Draw,” near Dolores. We will focus on using our senses during this walk – how does winter look, smell, sound, feel, and even taste different from other seasons, and why? For ages 4 – 10, accompanied by an adult. Snowshoes are provided if needed. There is no charge for the Discovery Walks. Contact SJMA to register for this walk (preregistration requested), or schedule your own Winter Discovery Walk at 970-759-1170 or e-mail gabi@sjma.org. Walks can take place on easy terrain near Cortez, Mancos, Dolores, or Durango.

Spend a winter morning at Mesa Verde National Park on Saturday, December 22 from 9:00 a.m. to noon for “Plant and Animal Adaptations at Morefield Campground.” Park biologists and interpretive rangers will lead a hike to explore the amazing ways that animals and plants survive in the cold winter environment of Mesa Verde National Park. The hike will tour the winter habitats of plants and animals in the Morefield Campground area. Limited to 20 people, ages 7 to adult. Advance reservations are requested; contact MVNP at 970-529-4631 to reserve your space or for more information.

The Southwest Colorado Winter Ecology Series is a partnership between SJMA, San Juan National Forest, BLM Tres Rios Field Office, Mesa Verde National Park, and San Juan/Four Corners Native Plant Society. Visit www.nps.gov/meve/planyourvisit/ winter_guidedhikes.htm for more information about the Winter Ecology Series.

Mesa Verde Foundation wishes you and your family a wonderful and fun-filled holiday season. MVF, with your support and help has had a busy year, and we are pleased with the progress we have made with several projects on behalf of Mesa Verde. The Cliff Palace stabilization project, one of eleven National Park Foundation Legacy Projects nationwide, will proceed in 2013, helping the park take an important step in the preservation of this iconic ancient treasure. The newly re-established Horse Patrol program in the park has received significant support from the Roundup Riders of the Rockies Heritage Trails Foundation, the Chuckwagon Trail Riders Foundation, and several individuals. Rehabilitation of the horse facilities should begin in the spring, and new horses will be purchased. Most important, the long awaited new Visitor and Research Center at the park entrance is being opened later this month. The foundation is so proud of this magnificent new facility and the role it played in helping the facility become a reality. None of these achievements would be possible without you, our supporters, so THANK YOU for helping provide such holiday cheer for Mesa Verde!
