Mesa Verde National Park to Waive Entrance Fees on Veterans Day Weekend

Mesa Verde National Park will be joining national park units around the country in waiving entrance fees on Veterans Day Weekend in recognition of current and former servicemen and servicewomen. Come celebrate the extraordinary places that our nation’s veterans have kept safe for us!

All visitors who arrive at Mesa Verde National Park on Veterans Day Weekend, November 10-12, 2012, will be allowed free entry into the park. The fee free waiver does not include other fees collected in advance or by contractors—such as fees charged for camping, reservations, tours and use of concessions. To find other national park sites near you, go to www.nps.gov/findapark/index.htm.

The National Park Service also offers the $80 America the Beautiful National Parks and Federal Recreation Areas annual pass for free to all active military members and their dependents. This annual pass provides entrance to all national parks, national wildlife refuges, national forests, and many other Federal lands – more than 2,000 in all. For more information, visit www.nps.gov/findapark/feefreeparks.htm

In honor of Veterans Day Weekend, the Mesa Verde Museum Association is offering a special promotion November 10-12: when you spend $20 or more at either our Chapin Mesa Archeological Museum store or our Colorado Welcome Center store, you’ll receive a free 2013 “Peaks, Plateaus, and Canyons of the Colorado Plateau” desktop calendar!

Mesa Verde National Park Awarded Active Trails Program Grant for Free Winter Ecology Hikes

Mesa Verde National Park has been selected to receive a 2012 Active Trails grant from the National Park Foundation (NPF), the official charity of America’s national parks. Now in its fourth cycle, the National Park Foundation’s Active Trails program promotes national parks as venues for community engagement, and encourages healthy living through various forms of recreation and volunteer service on land and water trails.

Since 2008, the National Park Foundation has granted over $1.2 million through its Active Trails program. To date, Active Trails has engaged more than 3,100 volunteers and 86 project partners who combined have contributed over 13,000 hours to help promote, refurbish or build national park trails that were ultimately enjoyed by 291,000 visitors (and counting!).

The NPF grant provided Mesa Verde National Park with funding to improve winter trails and purchase materials for winter ecology interpretive programs in the park. Mesa Verde is joining with the San Juan Mountains Association and the San Juan Four Corners Native Plant Society to offer a series of free winter ecology hikes during the 2012-2013 winter season. Four of the seven planned hikes will take place in Mesa Verde National Park. The first hike in the series takes place in the park on November 10, 2012. For further information on the hikes, please visit www.nps.gov/meve/planyourvisit/winter_guidedhikes.htm. Advance reservations are required for most of the hikes.
