Highland Park Middle School teacher Jean Streepey was named the Region 10 Secondary Teacher of the Year during a luncheon honoring top educators today in Garland. Streepey, a seventh-grade math teacher, has been teaching in HPISD for 9 years. In addition,Kendra Davison, third-grade teacher at University Park Elementary, was named one of three finalists in the elementary division. Davison has taught third- and fourth-grade at UP Elementary since 2008.
Region 10 serves Highland Park ISD and 79 other area school districts. The region covers more than 8 counties and has 50,000 educators serving more than 800,000 students.
Streepey will now be one of 20 teachers from across the state under consideration for Texas Teacher of the Year. The state award, administered by the Texas Association of School Administrators, is the highest honor the state can bestow upon a teacher.
"It is truly an honor just to represent Highland Park ISD," said Streepey, who started teaching in the district after her children attended school in HPISD. "To receive this distinction is more than I could possibly ever imagine."
"Anyone who knows Jean Streepey knows she is an outstanding educator," said McCulloch Intermediate and Highland Park Middle School Principal Dr. Laurie Hitzelberger. "She has a heart for teaching and it is always a joy to visit her classroom."
Superintendent Dr. Tom Trigg was at today's luncheon to applaud Jean and Kendra as they received their awards.
"On behalf of everyone in Highland Park ISD, I would like to congratulate Jean and Kendra on their much-deserved recognition today," Dr. Trigg said. "It is apparent that these two teachers bring a special touch to their classrooms each and every day. I am thrilled that Region 10 has recognized both Jean and Kendra."
In the spring, the faculty at each HPISD campus selects an outstanding leader to serve as the campus Teacher of the Year. On a rotating basis by campus, one teacher from the elementary level (grades 1-6) and one teacher from the secondary level (grades 7-12) are selected to represent the district at the regional level.
Both Streepey and Davison will address HPISD faculty and staff at the annual Superintendent's Convocation on Aug. 17. Video of both speeches will be available on YouTube soon after the event.
Congratulations to Streepey and Davison!
