Natalie Rathjen wins state cross country championship

HPHS senior Natalie Rathjen won the UIL 4A cross country individual state title Nov. 9 in Round Rock. Rathjen posted a time of 17:41.78, 46 seconds faster than the second-place finisher.

The girls team finished in second place, and the boys team finished 12th.

"I am so proud of the team," Girls Head Coach Susan Bailey said. "They had an incredible race - they stepped up to the challenge and raced extremely well! I am so happy for Natalie and her state championship. She is the fourth individual winner for HP - Crystal McGuire in 1984, Emily Field in 1998 and Sara Sutherland in 2007."

"What a great way to end an awesome year for our girls cross country team," Athletic Director Johnny Ringo said. "Natalie Rathjen has been impressive to watch all season, and her first-place finish at state is the culmination of an outstanding career. The team's second-place finish is the fifth time in the last five years that we have finished first or second at state. I want to congratulate our girls and coaches on another great year and for representing HPISD in such a positive manner."
