   39 students named National Merit Commended Students &
6 students earn National Hispanic Scholar honors

Highland Park High School Principal Walter Kelly announced that 39 seniors have been named Commended Students in the 2014 National Merit Scholarship Program. In addition, six students have been named National Hispanic Scholars. Kelly and Superintendent Dr. Dawson Orr offered their congratulations to the students and their parents, counselors and administrators at a breakfast in their honor Oct. 28 at HPHS.
"Congratulations to our National Merit Commended Students and our National Hispanic Scholars," Kelly said. "Their success on the PSAT represents a long-term commitment to academics on behalf of the students, their families and their teachers. We are so proud of these students for the inspiration they provide through their performance in academics, fine arts, athletics and student leadership. They have demonstrated that continued dedication to excellence has merit and reward."

Approximately 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Commended students placed among the top 5 percent of more than 1.5 million students who took the 2012 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

In addition, the College Board National Hispanic Recognition Program identified nearly 5,300 of the highest-scoring students from a nationwide total of more than 259,000 high school juniors in the United States and U.S. Territories who took the PSAT/NMSQT and designated themselves as Hispanic/Latino.
