U.S. News again ranks UW-Eau Claire among top five public universities in the Midwest

From UW-Eau Claire

U.S. News & World Report magazine has again named the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire among the best public regional universities in the Midwest.

The 2013 edition of "America's Best Colleges" ranks UW-Eau Claire No. 5 among the top regional public universities in the Midwest and 31st among all private and public institutions in the Midwest. Every year since 1995, U.S. News has consistently ranked UW-Eau Claire among the top five public institutions in the Midwest and in the top third of public and private Midwestern regional universities.

U.S. News & World Report ranks UW-Eau Claire in the "Regional Universities" category. The category's Midwest region includes schools in 12 states stretching from the Dakotas in the west to Missouri in the south and Ohio in the east. Public and private universities included in this category provide undergraduate- and master's-level programs, and typically draw students from surrounding states.

The regional rankings include 625 schools in four geographic areas (North, South, Midwest and West). The rankings reflect how schools compare within their regions on a set of indicators, including peer assessment, graduation and freshman retention rates, faculty resources, student selectivity, financial resources and alumni giving.

Among the U.S. News-ranked regional universities, UW-Eau Claire also is recognized as one of 37 Midwestern "A-Plus Schools for B Students." Universities in this category are "those where nonsuperstars have a decent shot at being accepted and thriving - where spirit and hard work could make all the difference in admissions offices," according to the U.S. News category description.

The U.S. News top-five ranking is no surprise given the quality of the people he's met and the momentum he's seen in every corner of campus since arriving at UW-Eau Claire this summer, said Interim Chancellor Gilles Bousquet.

"It's clear there is an extraordinary number of talented people who make up the UW-Eau Claire campus community," Bousquet said. "This great institution attracts smart and creative students, faculty and staff. Our faculty and staff offer our students the kinds of meaningful experiences and opportunities that help them thrive as citizens and professionals. More than anything, the U.S. News rankings remind us that it's the quality of people that matters most when measuring the success of a university."

Storm Chasers' "Tornado Intercept Vehicle" Makes a Stop in Eau Claire

The 14,500lb vehicle made a stop in Eau Claire on Water Street on Tuesday to help promote the film "Tornado Alley" which premieres at the Science Museum of Minnesota Omnitheater on September 28th.  Amazingly, the TIV can withstand winds of up to 170mph.

Test Your Strength with "Masskrugstemmen"

Grab some teammates or compete in Masskrugstemmen individually!  We're adding a new event to the Fall Festival!
This fun competition originated in Germany and Masskrugstemmen in English can be translated into "beer-stein holding." This Bavarian tradition/sport popular Europe and is gaining momentum in the U.S. where a National Champion is crowned each year in New York's Central Park during the month of October.
The event is done by holding a liter of beer (in our case root beer from Northwoods Brew Pub!) in a large mug extended out in front of you in one arm parallel to the ground. It's held there until the arm is no longer parallel to the ground or until any of the beer is spilled- both will get you disqualified and out of the competition. The winner is the person whose arm is outstretched the longest.
Sound easy? The mug filled weighs about 5 pounds and most first-timers last only a few minutes. The world record is 19 minutes.

Rules and Regulations

  • You must be able to hold "Masskrug" (a 1-liter stein filled with root beer or cream soda) with one arm stretched out in front of you parallel to the ground
  • Your free hand may not be used to support your other arm.
  • No touching any other contestant
  • Once you spill any liquid, or move your arm so it is not parallel to the ground, you will be disqualified
  • The winner is the person with their arm extended out the longest
  • Enter with a team (3-6) of friends or co-workers!  Or enter individually!

If you are interested in participating in Masskrugstemmen contact Tyler at tyler.romasco@eauclairewi.gov.
