Engineers Prep Downtown for Two-Way Traffic Conversion
Two-Way Traffic Tentatively Set for Sept. 20
You'll be noticing more changes beginning next week in preparation for the two-way traffic conversion of Graham Avenue and Barstow Street. City of Eau ClaireTransportation Engineer Ross Spitz says next week, the plans include modifying traffic signals for when the conversion takes place on September 20. The traffic island at Eau Claire and Barstow Streets will be removed. Crews will also be marking the pavement for crosswalks.
During the week of September 17, barrels will be put up as will new loading zone signage. Crews will also be painting centerlines in the roadways, and removing some pavement markings. Spitz says they will also be placing electronic message boards up telling drivers of the upcoming conversion.
As for the tentative conversion taking place in the overnight hours of September 19, Spitz says a 4-way stop will be installed at Barstow and Eau Claire Streets. All one-way signage will be removed, and other necessary signage will be placed. Covers from traffic signals and new loading zone signage will be removed.

And Don't Miss the Fish!
Article by Kinzy Janssen of Volume One
A fish that takes its shape from a guitar, a Volkswagen fender, and some tornado-strewn corrugated metal has found a new home next to New York Pizza & Deli on Water Street in Eau Claire. Local found object sculptor Steve Bateman said he made the piece back in 2003 and was "storing" it in the yard of a private residence on the Eastside Hill until the residence was foreclosed upon. When friends encouraged Bateman to bring it into a more visible location, he got permission from property owners John Mogenson and Lisa Aspenson and moved it to the unoccupied square of grass. The fish, which is mounted to a pole, stands about five feet tall. While Bateman doesn't encourage touching the sculpture, he's excited about the public being able to observe it's every angle on foot. Twenty other sculptures featuring Bateman's signature style are on display around town at various private and public locations, including Banbury Place's Garbage Swan (currently headless while he makes repairs) and the 10-foot robot outside Transmission Supply and Service. He's also working on two permanent sculptural collages to flank the sign (also by Bateman) of Tangled Up in Hue on Barstow Street. The busy artist has plans to fill a few of the empty pedestals on the downtown sculpture tour soon. |

Test Your Strength with "Masskrugstemmen"
at the International Fall Festival
Photo Courtesy of Big Time City
Grab some teammates or compete in Masskrugstemmen individually! We're adding a new event to the Fall Festival!
This fun competition originated in Germany and Masskrugstemmen in English can be translated into "beer-stein holding." This Bavarian tradition/sport popular Europe and is gaining momentum in the U.S. where a National Champion is crowned each year in New York's Central Park during the month of October.
The event is done by holding a liter of beer (in our case root beer from Northwoods Brew Pub!) in a large mug extended out in front of you in one arm parallel to the ground. It's held there until the arm is no longer parallel to the ground or until any of the beer is spilled- both will get you disqualified and out of the competition. The winner is the person whose arm is outstretched the longest.
Sound easy? The mug filled weighs about 5 pounds and most first-timers last only a few minutes. The world record is 19 minutes.
Rules and Regulations
- You must be able to hold "Masskrug" (a 1-liter stein filled with root beer or cream soda) with one arm stretched out in front of you parallel to the ground
- Your free hand may not be used to support your other arm.
- No touching any other contestant
- Once you spill any liquid, or move your arm so it is not parallel to the ground, you will be disqualified
- The winner is the person with their arm extended out the longest
- Enter with a team (3-6) of friends or co-workers! Or enter individually!
If you are interested in participating in Masskrugstemmen contact Tyler at tyler.romasco@eauclairewi.gov. |
