The use of alcohol and other drugs amongst youth continues to decline

By Alejandro Caldern

APP Coordinator- Region 3

Every day there are less young people who drink alcohol or use illicit drugs in the United States. This good news was recently revealed by two of the most important studies about the use of substances in the country.

According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), 22.7% of teens reported drinking alcohol during the 30 days prior to the study. This survey was conducted in 2013. In 2012 the rate was 24.3%.

Meanwhile the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) showed that the consumption of alcohol amongst high school students dropped from 38.7% in 2011 to 34.9% in 2013. The consumption has been declining since 2007, when the rate was 44.7%. Among young Hispanics the figure dropped from 42.3% in 2011 to 37.5% in 2013.

Both studies discredit the misperception that most young people consume alcohol. The same can be said about the use of illicit drugs. The first of these surveys shows that the consumption in young people between 12 and 17 years of age fell from 9.5% in 2012 to 8.8% in 2013.

These surveys also show that prevention works. That's why, here in CETPA, we continue to work on preventing families becoming affected from the use of alcohol and other drugs. We invite every person to support our projects and join forces to achieve this goal.

Deserved Recognition

By Alejandro Caldern

APP Coordinator- Region 3

On Thursday, September 9th, The Hispanic Achievement & Business Leadership Awards,

HABLA, took place in Atlanta and among the winners was our very own coworker and friend, Montse Mota, CETPA's Alcohol Prevention Project Coordinator.

She received the recognition in the "Unsung Hero" category, and according with the eventorganizer, she is the person with the highest number of nominations in the seven years of history of the HABLA Awards.

Montse received this recognition thanks to her valuable work not only in the Prevention Department, but also her prior position in CETPA as the Family Liaison of the DREAMER's Clubhouse. Her patience, compassion and love for the youth helped her to guide teenagers to overcome difficulties, such as drug use. That's why some of these teens wrote nomination letters that helped Montse to win this award.

On behalf of the Prevention Department and CETPA in general, we join the voices of recognition for Montse Mota and we are glad to have a coworker with her human qualities.

Congratulations Montse!

Merecido reconocimiento

Felicitaciones Montse!
