A Tribute

I want to dedicate this month's column to two people who I consider pillars in our foundation, Norma Zúñiga-Cardoza and Elhy Solis. Norma has been at CETPA for twelve years and Elhy for nine. Words cannot describe the amount of sacrifice both of them have offered me, our Board of Directors, our staff, our volunteers, our clients and their families.

 

As CETPA begins a process of restructuring our operations to better function in our present environment, I felt it necessary to acknowledge Norma and Elhy who have been instrumental in getting us to this place.

 

Norma will assume the role of Chief Operating Officer ensuring stability to our process. Elhy is helping me structure our Human Resources and Finance departments that are in need of support due to our exponential growth over the past 13 years.

 

Thank you Norma and Elhy for you have done and for all that you continue to do to make sure we fulfill our mission to serve our community.

Quiero dedicar la columna de este mes a dos personas que considero pilares en nuestra fundación, Norma Zúñiga de Cardoza y Elhy Solis. Norma comenzó su labor en CETPA hace doce años y Elhy hace nueve años. Palabras no pueden describir la cantidad de sacrificio que ambas me han ofrecido a mí, a nuestra Mesa Directiva, a nuestro personal, a nuestros voluntarios, a nuestros clientes y a sus familias.

 

CETPA está iniciando un proceso de reestructuración de nuestras operaciones para poder funcionar mejor en nuestro actual ambiente corporativo. En este momento sentí que era necesario reconocer a Norma y a Elhy quienes han sido instrumentales para que CETPA haya alcanzado llegar al gran nivel en el que nos encontramos.

 

Norma asumirá el cargo de Directora de Operaciones para garantizar la estabilidad de nuestro proceso. Elhy me está ayudando a estructurar nuestros departamentos de recursos humanos y finanzas, departamentos que se encuentran en necesidad de apoyo debido a nuestro crecimiento exponencial en los últimos 13 años.

  

Gracias Norma y Elhy por todo lo que han hecho y por todo lo que siguen haciendo para asegurar el cumplir con nuestra misión de servir a nuestra comunidad.

Dr. Mancini on SAMHSA Panel

Dr. Pierluigi Mancini, CETPA's CEO has been invited to participate in a Substance Abuse Mental Health Services Administration's (SAMHSA) Road to Recovery Radio and Television series. Dr. Mancini will be participating in a panel addressing Prevention and Early Intervention in Behavioral Health: Promising Practices. The Television and Radio series is available in the official Recovery Month Web site at www.recoverymonth.gov/Multimedia.aspx.

CONGRATULATIONS!!

The Board of Directors, employees, volunteers, clients and families of CETPA would like to congratulate Michelle Baroni Diana Plazas, Sergio Lozano and Alejandro Calderón for achieving the credentials of Certified Prevention Specialists. The 'Fantastic Four' as they are often referred to are Georgia's first bilingual/bi-cultural certified prevention specialists. Way to go!

Sharing Experiences

Case Manager, Dream'rs Clubhouse

 

On Monday, February 18th CETPA Clubhouse's 16 year old Peer Mentor, Ana G., and Case Manager, Jeniffer Manon, were invited by the Georgia Department of Behavioral Health & Developmental Disabilities (DBHDD) to participate in a Technical Assistance Day for all Child and Adolescent Mental Health Clubhouses.

 

The event took place in the Pineland CSB S.H.I.N.E.'s Clubhouse in Statesboro, in which both DR3AMR'S Clubhouse representatives delivered a training, that provided guidance, and strategies on how to implement adolescent peer support services in the clubhouses.

 

During this occasion, the DR3AMR'S Clubhouse representatives had the opportunity to creatively showcase real life illustrations of past experiences within the program, and how they have contributed into shaping us, overcoming obstacles, and improving our services through by using dramatization and performing a skit. Utilizing a PowerPoint presentation Ana and Jennifer shared techniques that have successfully worked at CETPA when recruiting, preparing and retaining Peer Mentors in the program. This process includes different activities such as project involvement/participation, leadership opportunities, recognition, efforts and others.

 

Thank you Dr. Henderson-Smith and Dr. Pearson for the privilege of participating in this event and allowing us to share our experiences.

My experience at the training in Statesboro, Georgia was really fun and I enjoyed it so much. Having the attention of people, and being able to help them and prepare them to have better job skills is what I love the most. Things like this is what I enjoy doing.

I would love to repeat this experience again."

Administradora de Casos, Dream'rs Clubhouse

 

El lunes 18 de febrero Ana G., Mentora de Pares del Clubhouse de CETPA y Jeniffer Manon, Administradora de Casos, fueron invitadas por el Departamento de Salud Mental y Discapacidades del Desarrollo del Estado de Georgia (DBHDD por sus siglas en inglés) para participar en un día de asistencia técnica para los Clubhouses de Salud Mental para niños y adolescentes en la ciudad de Statesboro.

 

El evento tuvo lugar en el Clubhouse Pineland CBS S.H.I.N.E. en Statesboro y allí las representantes del Clubhouse de Dreamr's entrenaron, orientaron y aportaron estrategias para implementar servicios de apoyo a través de pares en los clubhouses.

 

En esta ocasión, las representantes de Dreamr's tuvieron la oportunidad de mostrar, de manera creativa, mediante el uso de una dramatización, algunas experiencias del programa y cómo éstas han contribuido a la superación de obstáculos y a la mejora de nuestros servicios.

Utilizando una presentación en PowerPoint, Ana y Jennifer compartieron técnicas que han trabajado con éxito en CETPA a la hora de reclutar, preparar y retener Mentores en el programa. Este proceso incluye diferentes actividades como la participación en los proyectos, participación en las oportunidades de liderazgo, reconocimiento, esfuerzos y otros.


Gracias Doctora Henderson-Smith y Doctora Pearson por el privilegio de participar en este evento y permitirnos compartir nuestras experiencias.

The Prevention Clubhouse

The time has finally arrived. The Prevention Clubhouse for the year 2013 has opened and we are working with 15 young people from various parts of Gwinnett and DeKalb County. For twelve weeks we are providing them with prevention education, sports, dance, and arts & crafts classes. The participants are also responsible for performing various community service activities -- and on Monday, February 18th the prevention clubhouse members had their first community service activity. On that day they helped the Downtown Norcross Community Garden with the maintenance of their garden. Our members also picked up lettuce that CETPA had grown in 2012. In addition to that, our young people helped lay wood chucks and construct ventilated tents so that the products being grown wouldn't get freeze burn.

 

Connie Weathers, who is the director for the garden, was kind enough to show us around and direct us to what needed to be completed, but most importantly she talked to them about the importance of this project and where the food was going to go. Connie donates all of what is grown to the Food Bank. She explained to us that through this garden we are helping serve food to over 100 families a night and that was what made this experience even more rewarding.

 

The CETPA Prevention Clubhouse was very happy and honored to have been able to work with Connie at the Downtown Norcross Community Garden.

El momento ha llegado. El Club de Prevención ha comenzado su programa para el 2013 y estamos trabajando con 15 jóvenes Latinos de diferentes partes de los condados de Gwinnett y Dekalb. Durante 12 semanas se les proveerá con pláticas de Prevención, deportes, danza y clases de manualidades. Los participantes son responsables de participar en servicios y actividades comunitarias. El Lunes 18 de Febrero los miembros del club participaron en su primera actividad comunitaria. Los miembros ayudaron con el mantenimiento del Jardín Comunitario de Norcross. Nuestros miembros recogieron lechugas que CETPA cultivó en el 2012. Además, nuestros jóvenes ayudaron a poner platos de madera y construyeron tiendas ventiladas para que los productos cultivados estuvieran protegidos del frio y no se quemaran.

                                                                                   

Connie Weathers, quien es la Directora del Jardín tuvo la amabilidad de mostrarnos los alrededores e indicarnos lo que se necesitaba hacer, pero lo más importante fue cuando ella habló con los estudiantes acerca de la importancia de este proyecto, la razón porque existe y a dónde va la comida cultivada. Connie dona todo lo que se cultiva al Banco de Comida. Ella nos explicó que a través de este jardín, estamos ayudando a proveer comida a más de 100 familias por noche y que esto era lo que hacia esta experiencia más gratificante.

 

Los jóvenes y el personal del Club de Prevención de CETPA estuvieron muy contentos y honrados de haber podido trabajar con Connie en el Jardín comunitario de Norcross.

Substance Abuse Counselor: 

 

Education -

- Bachelor or Master 's degree in counseling or related field; and/or Certified Addiction Counselor or working toward certification or licensing;

- Six months of supervised treatment of chemical dependency and knowledge of addiction and mental health preferred.

- Six mpnths of supervised practicum/internship in the addiction/mental health field preferred.

- Must be fluent in writing, speaking and reading English and Spanish.

- If candidate claims to be in recovery from addiction, must have a minimum of three years of continued recovery.

 

Specific Duties -

- Serves as Counselor for assigned clients.

- Regularly attends and participates in all clinical staff meetings, administrative meetings and in-service training.

- Meets individually with assigned clients to provide individual treatment planning/development according to CETPA's policies and procedures.

- Completes pre-admission assessment for patients to determine appropriateness for treatment at CETPA.

- Completes all necessary evaluations, reports (MICP), units, encounter data, discharge summaries on time.

- Reports all necessary data to Treatment Coordinator and Data Entry on time.

- Documents on client chart after each direct client contact as dictated by CETPA's policies and procedures.

- Presents education topics to client population.

Leads group counseling or recovery groups as assigned.

- Performs individual and/or family sessions.

- In the absence of support staff (CSI), communicates with referral sources on admission and thereafter, as required by the referral source or dictated by CETPA's policies and procedures.

- In the absence of the Intake Counselor, contacts family members, if allowed by client, and orients them to family participation.

- Makes appropriate referrals to the CSI for continued services.

- In the absence of the CSI, develops with client a Continuing Care Plan at least one week prior to completion of treatment.

- Collaborates with others to accomplish work related activities.

- Responsible for maintaining continuing education hours for license/certification and reports them to Human Resources.

- Abides by all rules of confidentiality and the Code of Ethics prescribed by CETPA.
