Hired Power

Greetings Friends and Colleagues;

As addiction continues to prevail in our society we experience more and more this disease being the topic through the media, and even portrayed through the storyline of several of our favorite television series.

As I watch, and yes sometimes critique, I have come to the opinion that some do a fairly good job with depicting the overall systemic (dys)function involved and barriers to long term recovery success. And although these programs are fictional, it allows the conventional viewer to identify many areas of treatment and transition that are glaringly disastrous in the addict's authentic desire and plan to sustain recovery.

Now those of us with years of experience in the treatment industry may initially rebuff the storyline line for being dramatized for increased ratings, true. But for a parent or loved one of an addict with "no idea where to begin" and under their conceived timeline to "save him/her", where do they begin?

This leaves me to ask you, my friends and colleagues, is this increasing storyline hype and media spotlight a gift or consequence to us as an industry? Could it be both? Could it possibly be a door opening for our expertise to be heard in a new forum?

Today may we approach the doors opened to us with sincerity in our hearts, honesty in our smiles and professional ethic that penetrates uncertainty.

All our best,

MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS MONTH

Statistics on Treatment of Co-Occurring Disorders

SAMHSA:  Mental and substance use conditions often co-occur.  The statistics of those with co-occurring disorders receiving simultaneous treatment of each diagnosis in primary treatment is extremely low.
  • Over 8.9 million persons have co-occurring disorders; that is they have both a mental and substance use disorder
  • Only7.4 percent of individuals receive treatment for both conditions
  • 55.8 percent receiving no treatment at all.

UCLA seeking applicants for OCD Study

The following is that we received via email

and wanted to share with our friends and colleagues

Project summary

The UCLA OCD Research Program is looking for people with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) to take part in a study providing these possible benefits:

  • Free Diagnostic Evaluation
  • 4 weeks free Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (non-drug psychotherapy)
  • Free MRI/MRSI Brain Scans
  • Free Neurocognitive Testing

Purpose of the Study

The purpose of this project is to determine what, if any, changes in brain chemistry and brain structure take place in adults as a result of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, a form of non-drug psychotherapy, for OCD. We will measure amounts and distribution of the neurotransmitter chemical glutamate in the brain using MRSI (Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopic Imaging) scans before and after 4 weeks of CBT.  Another purpose is to determine if treatment improves certain cognitive abilities.
