Greetings Friends and Colleagues;
As I was in search of that perfect topic and reflecting on what I may share in this month's newsletter, one phrase continued to repeat itself - "Be Inspired".
Now likely that was my subconscious giving me some words of advice instead of a newsletter topic, but either way I began thinking about the words in that simple phrase.
in·spi·ra·tion as defined in the Encarta Dictionary can be; "stimulation to do creative work; somebody or something that inspires; creativeness; good idea; divine influence;" and lastly "breathing in".
As an industry, we cross paths of profound people regularly. The stories we experience and others told of both triumph and hardships are clearly inspirational. As a result, we are inspired. So this brings me to ask a simple question, do we wait for inspiration to happen to us or do we pursue opportunities to be inspired? Seeking "to be inspired" even with great intent, may prove to be difficult - especially in speaking of the day to day activities of our personal lives.
Today I will begin to consciously seek opportunities for inspiration in my personal and professional life. I will no longer wait purposelessly for these moments to happen upon me but rather step into action. I will allow myself to be surrounded by prospects of a divine influence... not only within my physical surroundings but also in my intellectual pursuit. And when all else fails, I will "breath in".
All our best,
Your Ally in Good Health!

SAMHSA News Release
"Report shows 7.5 million children live with a parent
with an alcohol use disorder"
|
A new report shows 7.5 million children under age 18 (10.5 percent of this population) lived with a parent who has experienced an alcohol use disorder in the past year. According to the report by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) 6.1 million of these children live with two parents-with either one or both parents experiencing an alcohol use disorder in the past year.
The remaining 1.4 million of these children live in a single-parent house with a parent who has experienced an alcohol use disorder in the past year. Of these children 1.1 million lived in a single mother household and 0.3 million lived in a single father household. This study is done in conjunction with Children of Alcoholics Week, February 12-18, 2012.
"The enormity of this public health problem goes well beyond these tragic numbers as studies have shown that the children of parents with untreated alcohol disorders are at far greater risk for developing alcohol and other problems later in their lives," said SAMHSA Administrator Pamela S. Hyde. "SAMHSA and others are promoting programs that can help those with alcohol disorders find recovery - not only for themselves, but for the sake of their children. SAMHSA is also playing a key role in national efforts to prevent underage drinking and other forms of alcohol abuse."
The report entitled, Data Spotlight: Over 7 Million Children Live with a Parent with Alcohol Problems, is based on data analyzed from SAMHSA's 2005-2010 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH). NSDUH is a scientifically conducted annual survey of approximately 67,500 people throughout the country, aged 12 and older. Because of its statistical power, it is the nation's premier source of statistical information on the scope and nature of many substance abuse and behavioral health issues affecting the nation.

Community Awareness...
Upon the heels of various horrific tales of "bath salt" related incidents,
as a treatment industry it is our duty to heighten our awareness
about this drug - its presentation and effects to better help those we serve

"Blueberry Spice" Blamed In Outbreak
A chemical variant of the synthetic drug spurs a medical crisis in Wyoming.
A chemically laced herb variety of a street drug called "blueberry spice" has caused at least 15 users to fall seriously sick in Casper, Wyoming. State officials say the victims, mainly teens and young adults, sought medical care after experiencing vomiting and back pain after smoking or ingesting the substance; three people have even been hospitalized for kidney fail ure. "At this point, we are viewing use of this drug as a potentially
life-threatening situation," says Wyoming state epidemiologist Tracy Murphy. According to the DEA, "spice" is coated with chemicals that are meant to mimic THC-the active ingredients in marijuana-giving users a similar experience to smoking pot. The DEA first tracked spice back in 2009, and since then the number of users has continued to rise. A ban on five of the chemicals used to make spice was extended by the DEA last week, but authorities continue to struggle to keep up with the
ever-changing chemical make-up of the herbal product, as manufacturers circumvent bans by adjusting their recipes.
