1/2 Penny Tourism Tax Made Permanent
January 31st Governor Daugaard signed the first bill of the 2013 legislative session which was HB1066 the 1/2 Penny Tourism Tax to make it permanent. This is a real WIN for tourism in South Dakota. So many people worked with their legislators to inform them how beneficial this is for the state.
Thanks to Visitor Industry Alliance for their effort on this important legislation. If you are not currently a member of VIA, I encourage you to join and attend meetings. This organization works for you in legislative issues that may affect your tourism business. http://sdchamber.biz/media/2010sdchamberbiz/2013%20UPLOADS/MEMBERSHIP%20AP.pdf

  Yankton 89,952.2

Map shows the official counties covered by SSDTA according to it's 1987 Articles of Incorporation. The colored areas are the five districts each represented by three SSDTA board members.
2012 data shows visitor spending greater in eastern South Dakota than the west. The data collected by SD Tourism does not reflect the true region's geographic area thus their numbers are slightly lower than the actual figure above. When using our actual counties, SSDTA visitor spending is above that of the other regions in the state including the Black Hills region. This is not new spending but the stats are now being collected in a different, more realistic manner.
There is still much work to be done to show who visitors are and when they come. The eastern side of the state has many more hunters and fishermen that come in the shoulder seasons that are not counted in the "peak season". Visitors come in many forms to the Southeast Region from sportsmen, tournament attendees, cultural and historical interests, and so much more.
