Door County's Dozen Destinations:
Jacksonport & What To Do

Door County is not just one place, but at least 12 different areas. This month we continue our Door County Dozen Destinations year-long tribute with a feature story about Jacksonport.

Jacksonport backstory: Jacksonport is situated on the Lake Michigan shoreline in an area that is still called the "quiet side" by many visitors and travelers.
In addition to Lake Michigan, Jacksonport's focal points include its Lakeside Park and beach. Shops and restaurants are housed in vintage and century-old farmhouses and cottages on Hwy. 57.  Many afford water views. Some travelers stay in Jacksonport to be near Whitefish Dunes State Park and Cave Point County Park, which lie just south of town.

Originally a busy logging and fishing village, Jacksonport is now home to about 750 year-round residents.  The town was organized in 1869, and a good way to learn of its history is by touring the old root cellar at the Erskine rest area.  It was recently restored and is open to the public during key events.

What to do:   Bring the bikes. Jacksonport is a great place to ride Door County's back roads.  And Jacksonport hosts some of the most enjoyable and charismatic Door County events:  Maifest, Cherry Fest and the Polar Bear Swim.
The 44th annual Jacksonport Maifest takes place May 28 and 29 this year.  During this annual Memorial Day weekend event, the "quiet side" of Door County makes a lot of noise.   There's a parade at 10:30 a.m. Saturday and music at Lakeside Park. The park is also the site for an art fair and food and beverages sales.

And Lakeside Park becomes the venue for Cherry Fest on Aug. 6.  Jacksonport celebrates Door County's cherry bounty at this one-day festival, organized by the Jacksonport Historical Society.  Art sales and children's activities are on tap. But the key Cherry Fest attraction is the bakery booth offering cherry kolaches, cherry pie and cherry ice cream.  The fruit is also the star of jam, pie filling and other products for sale.

On New Year's day, people get a feel for Jacksonport during the winter. Hundreds take a plunge in Lake Michigan to celebrate a new year. The 31st annual swim, organized by the Jacksonport Polar Bear Club is set for noon Jan. 1 at Lakeside Park beach.

Looking for a place to stay or eat in Jacksonport?  Accommodations range from motels and campground to cottages, beach houses and resorts.  Check out wonderful options at www.DoorCountyNavigator.com, as well
as restaurants such as JJ's of Jacksonport, Mike's Port Pub and Grill and more.

Door County Tours by Segway

To be sure, there are a lot of ways to see Door County:  by boat, car, a good walk or bike ride. But one way you may not have tried is via the two wheels of a Segway Personal Transporter.

Segway the Doors Tours offers tours through Peninsula State Park, to lighthouses, through Door County's coastal towns and villages, on Washington Island and more.
Tours range from about 50 minutes to one and one-half hours to five hours for the Washington Island tour.

Included is a brief training on the Segway Personal Transporter.  Organizers say the tours offer opportunities to learn Door County history, enjoy nature and experience being on the two wheels of a Segway.

"Segway Tours are great for everyone.  Some people want to experience the beauty and history of Door County, and some just want to have fun on the Segway.  On a Segway Tour with us, you get to experience both," said Nick Segway the Door_ Dokolas, owner and manager of Segway the Door Tours.

Dokolas, who leads many of the tours himself, is a former teacher. He says the abundant tour offerings reflect Door County's unique qualities and vast educational opportunities.

More information about Segway the Door and current tour offerings is available by calling 920-376-0256.
