Door County's Dozen Destinations:
Sturgeon Bay & What To Do
By Donna Marie Pocius
Special to DoorCountyNavigator.com
Door County is not just one place, but at least 12 different areas. This month we continue our Door County Dozen Destinations year-long tribute with a feature story about Sturgeon Bay.
Sturgeon Bay backstory: Call it the County seat, Door County's year-round destination or the gateway to the Peninsula. Sturgeon Bay is worthy of a visit in 2016 by travelers who have been here before, or others who are coming for the first time. From maritime attractions to convenient areas for shopping and unique events, Sturgeon Bay has it all going on.
First-time travelers will not want to miss a drive across the historic Sturgeon Bay steel bridge. The Michigan Avenue bridge is one of the most unique historic bascule bridges in existence, according to Historic Bridges. "It's an impressive structure composed of beautiful trusses from start to finish," the organization points out. And people can walk over the bridge on a pedestrian walkway, as well.
Nearby, is the Maritime Museum of Door County, another iconic Sturgeon Bay destination that offers up information about Door County's nautical history. Also, in Sturgeon Bay, the Door County Historical Museum and the Miller Art Museum explore the County's past and art, respectively.
But if you're a shopper, you'll be tempted to wander. Independently owned boutiques, galleries, and shops can be found in three main areas: Third Avenue, Jefferson Street and on the city's West side. Check out the art at Popelka Trenchard Glass on the west side. Or head to Third Avenue and explore shops including Wilkins & Olander, Dancing Bear Home Collection, Door County Candy and Door County Trader. Jefferson Street also welcomes people with shops open year-round. Included is Door County Rubber Stamps & Scrapbooking and Bliss
The places to stay here are just as diverse as the points of interest and shopping. B&Bs are housed in some of Sturgeon's Bay's historic buildings. Stay at the Reynolds House or White Lace Inn. Or stay slightly out of town at the lovely Chanticleer Guest House. Resorts offer water views and much to do. They include Bay Shore Inn, Bridgeport Waterfront Resort and Westwood Shores Waterfront Resort.
What to Do: And Sturgeon Bay affords travelers with plenty more to do. Potawatomi State Park offers hiking trails, camping spots, and summer programs. People can also go sailing or fishing by engaging one of Sturgeon's Bay's many charter tour opportunities. Or take a tour on a historic fireboat.
Get a taste for the area by attending one of the many events. Upcoming are: the St. Patrick Day Parade 11 a.m. March 12. It kicks off at Sawyer Park, Sturgeon Bay, and proceeds up Oak Street to Madison Avenue.
Sturgeon Bay Fine Arts Festival takes place May 28 - 29 at Sunset Park. Harmony by the Bay Concerts will be featured 7 p.m. Wednesdays beginning June 15 through Aug. 24 in Martin Park. And the first annual Jefferson Street Jubilee is set for 11 am. To 5 p.m. June 25.
Stroll down Historic Third Avenue and be sure to stop in Wilkins & Olander for some great women's clothing and accessories; the Inn at Cedar Crossing (B&B and restaurant), and get some fabulous candies, ice cream and gourmet popcorn at Door County Candy!

The Peninsula Music Festival (PMF) is not just a venue for summer performances. Its annual February Fest continues with two more concerts this month. They will take place 2 p.m. at Shepherd of the Bay Lutheran Church, 11836 Hwy. 42, Ellison Bay.
On Feb. 20, music of Shatin, Beethoven, Clarke, Loeillet, Loeffler, Shulman and Saint-Saens will be featured. The performers will be Eric Olson, principal oboe, and Ellen Olson, violist. They will perform with Judith Jackson, a festival pianist.
Next is a concert taking place Feb. 27 with music inspired by the book, "The Light Keeper's Legacy" by Kathleen Ernst. The concert will feature the music of Nielsen, Grieg, Berwald, Sibelius and Gade. Performing will be violinists Janet Sutter and Karen Nelson, who are part of the PMF orchestra. Also featured will be pianist Jackson.
Lori Meyer, a local cellist, will play in the concert's final piece.
