Door County:  From A to Z!
This month's feature: V and W

The "Door County: From A to Z" comes to an end this month with some final creative ideas for enjoying the Peninsula.  We plan and keep our fingers Xcrossed for snow at cross country ski events, shop for yuletide treasures and make plans to do some zip ling.

X country skiing at night:  If you still have not tried cross country skiing at night, you have more opportunities in 2016-weather permitting, that is.  Whitefish Dunes State Park, 3275 Clark Lake Rd., Sturgeon Bay, has announced its annual candlelight ski will take place 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Jan. 31. If conditions are not sufficient, a hike is planned. Peninsula State Park will host its annual candlelight ski event from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Feb. 6.

Skiing at night is a different way to enjoy cross country trails.  The parks light the trails with candles, giving the sport a more serene feeling. Some say the events are for those with less experience. But even if you are a good cross country skier, consider participating. Park volunteers and staff work hard to groom and light trails, which are otherwise not lit and open for skiing at night. Skiers may focus on feeling a trail, as they are not likely to see it as well as they can during the day, experts in the sport say.

Check out other state parks offering possible candlelight ski events or hikes as well as  trails open during winter daylight hours by visiting www.DoorCountyNavigator.com.
Yuletide time: What better time than now to visit Door County's many holiday shops. The lovely decorating at these shops, located throughout the peninsula, gives Egg Harbor Lodge Banner shoppers ideas as well as puts them in a festive spirit. The shops offer home accessories as well as jewelry and clothing.  And they celebrate Christmas as well as many other holidays with dcor including floral pieces, tableware, ornaments, trees and more.

Don't miss Tannenbaum Holiday Shop, 11054 Hwy. 42, Sister Bay. As the DoorCountyNavigator.com review points out, "This is the holiday shop of holiday shops.  None is more complete or more detailed."  Here, you wander through rooms of a converted century-old church. Find trees decorated in different themes, colors and styles. The staff offer custom floral accessories. And the brands represented include Byers Choice, Christopher Radko, Department 56, Dickens Village, Fontanini Nativity, David Frykman and many more.

In Egg Harbor, All I Want for Christmas. . . And Then Some, is a festive place to shop during this yuletide time of year. But it has home accessories and dcor, as its name suggests, for other seasons, too. It's located at 7828 Hwy. 42 in the Main Street Shops. Visitors may find crystal, ornaments, candles and many more Christmas-inspired pieces.  The talented staff often decorate the holiday trees with various themes. Cooking and kitchen items are popular here, too.

Zip lining:  Zip lining is possible in Door County. Lakeshore Adventures, based in Baileys Harbor, offers zip lining experiences (as well as kayaking, jet-skiing, Newport Resort Banner boating, charter fishing and snorkeling).  They say their zip line takes people over the landscape of the Ridges Sanctuary in Baileys Harbor. And Gravity Trails has their zip lines at Egg Harbor Fun Park in Egg Harbor - fun for all!  People can learn more at www.DoorCountyNavigator.com.
 Something to do:
Door Shakespeare and Peninsula Players announce 2016 season

By Donna Marie Pocius

For arts lovers, it's probably not too early to plan ahead for the 2016 season. Door Shakespeare and Peninsula Players have announced their upcoming productions.
Door Shakespeare says its artistic team will perform William Shakespeare's "Julius Caesar" and "A Midsummer Night's Dream."

"The season promises to be thrilling, mysterious and full of heart and soul," Door Shakespeare says, adding that more Scandinavian Lodge Banner details including show dates and times are forthcoming.  The performances take place on the grounds of Bjorklunden, Baileys Harbor.

And in Fish Creek, the Peninsula Players' 81st season will run from June 14 through Oct. 16.  First up is "Chapatti," running June 14 to July 3.  The story focuses on two animal lovers who rediscover the need for caring and companionship, the Peninsula Players say.

Also planned is "The Hollow," a murder mystery taking place in an English country house after World War II.  It will be performed July 6 to 24.

Also coming to the theatre in a garden in 2016 is "The Full Monty."  It's a pop-rock musical comedy and based on the Oscar-nominated-film of the same name.  The play will be featured from July 27 to Aug. 14It presents the question, "how far would you go to provide for those you love?"

Next on the playbill is "Alabama Story," running Aug. 17 to Sept. 4.  As the name suggests, the play is set in Alabama. It's inspired by true events surrounding a librarian  on a quest to ban a book entitled, "The Rabbit's Wedding."

The season closes with "The 39 Steps," an adaptation of the 1935 Alfred Hitchcock movie running from Sept. 7 to Oct. 16. The story is renowned for its abundant characters and is anticipated to be engaging as well as fast-paced, the Peninsula Players say.

More information is available by calling Peninsula Players, 920-868-3287 or Door Shakespeare, 920-839-1500.
