Door County:  From A to Z!

This month's feature: N and O

The "Door County: From A to Z" series continues this month with more ideas for enjoying the Peninsula.  Take a hike or camp at Newport State Park.  And the time is ripe for strolling through orchards of Door County cherry trees.

Newport State Park: Newport State Park is one of five state parks in Door County.  Located in Ellison Bay, Newport is Wisconsin's only formally designated wilderness park, Egg Harbor Lodge Banner according to the Department of Natural Resources.  It offers travelers 30 miles of hiking trails. Campers can choose from 16 backpack/hike-in campsites (13 can be reserved).

The 2,373-acre park has 11 miles of Lake Michigan shoreline, affording visitors with  lovely views of the water as well as evergreen and hardwood forests and meadows.

The longest trail is the Europe Bay/Holtz loop trail.  It is seven miles long and situated on the northern edge of Newport State Park.  Or enjoy a hike on the one-mile-long Monarch trail that begins near the contact station.

Newport State Park also hosts a variety of events throughout the year including its candlelight cross country ski/hike and more.

Orchards and orchards of cherry trees:  Door County is a mega-producer of cherries.  From mid-July to mid-August, many Door County orchards offer opportunities to pick-your-own cherries in their orchards.

For example, Chery Lane Orchards, Forestville, promotes 13 acres of cherry and apple trees.  You can pick your own tart cherries, or they will pick them for you. A full cherry pail weighs about nine pounds.

Most Door County farm markets also have processing plants. They keep supplies of fresh cherries on hand and offer canned, dried and frozen cherries as well as cherry juice, jellies, jams and baked goods, according to the Wisconsin Cherry Growers. This is the time to purchase a fresh cherry pie at a farm market, or partake in a piece of cherry pie at a Door County restaurant.

Northern Sky Theater: one new name, a 25th anniversary & two world premieres

Northern Sky Theater has a lot to celebrate this summer.  The theater company has a new name, a 25th anniversary and two world premieres on its playbill.

Formerly American Folklore Theatre, Northern Sky will perform shows through Aug. 29 in the Peninsula State Park amphitheater; a vehicle sticker is not needed for theater admission.

Included are world premieres of "When Butter Churns to Gold" and "No Bones About It."

"When Butter Churns to Gold" is written by new collaborators Peter Welkin, Ron Barnett and Randi Wolfe; it brings a "dash of dastardly deeds and dairy delights to the stage," according to Northern Sky.

And "No Bones About It," is a "rib-tickling" new musical set in the world of competitive barbecue.  It's the sixth offering from the Richard Rogers writing team that also Scandinavian Lodge Banner created "Cheeseheads, the Musical" and "Muskie Love." They are Dave Hudson and Paul Libman, Northern Sky reported.

"It's fitting that we celebrate our new era as Northern Sky by doing what we do best," said Dave Maier, managing director.  "Offering up two brand new hilarious musicals is our way of doubling down on the mission to create shows that our fans know were written for them and their families."

Also, in case you missed it, Northern Sky will offer (for a second summer), "Strings Attached," a comic tale of mistaken identity set in a northern Wisconsin lodge. It was written by Dave Hudson and Colin Welford.

Looking to the fall, Northern Sky will perform "Lumberjacks in Love" Sept. 4 to Oct. 17.

Information about tickets, performance dates and times and more is available by calling 920/854-6117.  And tell them DoorCountyNavigator.com sent you!
