Door County:  From A to Z!

This month's feature:  F and G

The "Door County: From A to Z" series continues this month with some divergent stars of the county:  Fish Boils and Galleries.

Fish boils have long been associated with Door County. What's a fish boil?  It's a unique dining experience celebrating Scandinavian heritage as well as local whitefish bounty.  Many Door County restaurants offer fish boils. They serve up the freshly caught Lake Michigan whitefish with accompaniments after guests see it cooking outdoors in a pot on an open fire.

According to the White Gull Inn Restaurant, (which began offering fish boils in Fish Creek in 1959), chunks of fish are cooked in boiling water along with small red potatoes. A burst of flames causes the boilover. This is also a sure sign that the fish is done.

Further north, the Viking Grill, Ellison Bay, has presented and served fish boils since 1961. Here, the mild-flavored whitefish is served with new potatoes, sweet white onions, coleslaw, and pumpernickel bread, followed by Door County cherry pie for dessert.

Galleries galore!  Door County is an arts colony and home to abundant galleries showcasing paintings, pottery, jewelry, furniture, fiber art, glass and more creations for sale.   Many of the galleries are housed in repurposed Newport Resort Banner barns (like Ellison Bay Pottery Studios in a former apple barn) or vintage houses and outbuildings (such as the Martinez Studio and Gallery in Sturgeon Bay). So, arts lovers can enjoy the atmosphere and architecture as well as the art for sale.

Speaking of art for sale, Door County galleries presents work by local artists as well as regional and national names. For example, Woodwalk Gallery, Egg Harbor, features large-scale oil paintings by residence artist Margaret Lockwood as well as work by other Door County artists and regional artists.  Edgewood Orchard Galleries, Fish Creek, and Fine Line Designs Gallery, Ephraim, are renowned gallery destinations representing many artists working in a wide variety of media.

Greco Gallery is a rather new gallery, marketing itself as "an artistic boutique" showing work by 17 artists in downtown Sturgeon Bay.  Travelers may also find art in outdoor sculpture gardens and arts festivals held predominantly May through October.

The Third Avenue Playhouse (TAP) in Sturgeon Bay is hosting a spring performance schedule that includes Oleanna running now through March 29.

Oleanna is written by David Manet, the playwright who also authored Glengarry Glen Ross.  It tells a story set on a college campus, where a professor and his female Scandinavian Lodge Banner student have a "war of words that takes a dangerous turn," according to TAP.  Performances take place on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

TAPS's spring season also includes an April 12 concert featuring music by Karen Mal, Laurie Mclain and David Stoddard.

Then, from May 1 to 3, TAP will feature performances of Our Town.  And Maid to Marry will run from May 14 to May 31.

TAP is a year-round performance center, located at 234 N. Third Ave., with shows running on the main stage and on the newly renovated 84-seat studio theatre.  It's the home to Stage Door Theatre Co.  More information is available at 920-743-1760.
