May Edition!

Come to Door County now, and relish wonderful springtime weather and activities while avoiding the summer crowds and crunch. Here are some of our many ideas for enjoying this northeast Wisconsin peninsula.

Overnight:  This is the time of year when many families contemplate camping. Door County has many fine campgrounds offering pretty sites, convenient amenities and events. Consider, for example, Frontier Wilderness Campground, 4375 Hillside Rd., Egg Harbor.

The property offers more than 200 sites and a few cabins on its woody and sprawling grounds.

Included services are water and electric hook-up and a picnic table. High-speed Internet access is available throughout the property. Toilets and changing areas can be found throughout the property, too.

Frontier Wilderness Campground is offering spring and fall specials. Stay three nights, and get your fourth night free in May, June, September and October.  A number of events are also planned including Donuts for Dad June 14, a Dog Training Seminar June 21, and a chili cook-off and annual pig roast (dates to be determined).

Also, guests may enjoy an activity center and indoor pool. Outdoor attractions include a nine-hole mini golf course, three playgrounds, sand volleyball court, horseshoe court, basketball courts, ball field and sauna.

Learn more about Frontier Wilderness Campground and other campgrounds and fine places to stay at www.DoorCountyNavigator.com

Food and wine: Trio Restaurant, a favorite in Door County, opened May 9.  Located at 4655 Cty. Rd. E, Egg Harbor, Trio presents country French and Italian food in a bistro atmosphere. The menu changes monthly, but many dishes Newport Resort Banner come back to tempt you year after year-like the bowtie pasta with salmon. Also, look for cassoulet, spaghetti bolognese, lamb shank and more.  Desserts often include the locally made gelato, tiramisu, bread pudding and others.

Must see/do:   Don't miss your opportunity to buy fresh fruit, vegetables and crafts at local farmers markets throughout the summer.  Check out the Sturgeon Bay Farmers Market on Saturday mornings (starting 9 a.m. June 2) at Market Square, Michigan Street and Fourth Avenue, and the Jacksonport Farmers Market (starting 9 a.m. June 10) in Lakeside Park on Hwy. 57.

Chic shopping: The Shops at Liberty Square in Egg Harbor are worth a visit. Find eight connected shops specializing in women's and children's clothing, cosmetics, jewelry, gourmet foods, wine and more. The complex is near downtown Egg Harbor on Hwy. 42-easy to find and convenient to other stops you may need to make.

For arts lovers:   Two beloved art fairs are coming soon. Opening up the Door County art fair season are the Sturgeon Bay Fine Art Fair and the Maifest Art Fair in Jacksonport on May 24 and 25. Peruse fine art and crafts from local as well as Midwest and national artists. Children's activities and refreshments are also available.

Midsummer's Music Festival is a rare gem in Door County. Unlike other performing arts organizations, Midsummer's Music Festival takes its shows on the road-literally.

The nonprofit organization produces a series of chamber music concerts in various venues in Door County, giving visitors and locals opportunity to enjoy diverse settings as they hear the music. Choose from concerts in charming churches or galleries to performances in elegant restaurants or private homes.

The music is performed by professionals associated with Lyric Opera of Chicago, Pro Arte Quartet and other world-renowned organizations.

Midsummer's Music Festival's concerts run from June 13 through July 15 with its Labor Day series is scheduled for Aug. 26 through Sept. 1.

Here's a look at the programs and some of the many featured composers.  Check the organization's Web site or call 920/854-7088 for details on ticket prices (including two new levels of subscriptions) and dates and times.
