Open Hearth Lodge

If you are looking for a lovely place to stay in a good Door County location, consider Open Hearth Lodge, 2669 S. Bayshore Drive in Sister Bay.

The lodge is open year-round and affords guests with abundant activities to do on the property (there's an indoor pool and whirlpool as well as lounge with stone fireplace) as well as in nearby Sister Bay and other Door County towns.

We recently caught up with Nora Zacek, who has owned and operated Open Hearth Lodge with her husband John since 2004.

Q. How would you describe the key amenities here?

Nora:  We have 30 rooms; most have two queen-size beds or a king-size bed.  There are two whirlpool king-size bed rooms. And the Evergreen Suite has two bedrooms and two bathrooms separated by a living room/kitchenette.

Our lounge area has a stone fireplace. The Nest is the breakfast room for the daily continental breakfast; it's also used for gatherings during the day or evening--families have pizza here, friend playing games, cards or dominoes.  There's a patio out back near the pool and whirlpool, a firepit area out in the grass and picnic tables.

Q. What's is new at Open Hearth Lodge?

Nora:  We replaced sinks, faucets and countertops. We are working on adding new rustic room furniture in a few rooms at a time.

Q What makes Open Hearth Lodge unique?

Nora:  We are on six-plus acres, and there is a loop path that goes through the meadow for a walking.

Q. Anything else?

Nora:  We've been welcoming more bicyclers, Door Peninsula Century participants, PAW tour groups.  Our guests can use the garage for bike storage, and we have maps of recommended routes.

Something to do:

American Folklore Theatre (a Door County original!)

presents "Victory Farm"

Learn about Door County history while enjoying music and a fine storyline during a performance of "Victory Farm."

"Victory Farm" is an American Folklore Theatre-created musical running through Oct. 19 at Door Community Auditorium in Fish Creek.  It launched last year, receiving rave media reviews.

"Victory Farm" tells the story of a Door County cherry orchard in 1944 when a war was raging overseas and a Scandinavian Lodge Banner labor shortage was taking place in the U.S.  The character, Edna, and her daughter, Dottie, are uncertain how their farm will make it through the tough times. But then help arrives in an unexpected way.

American Folklore Theatre describes "Victory Farm" as "an uplifting take of family, forgiveness and fruit of our labor."  The book and lyrics are by Emilie Coulson and Katie Dahl with music and orchestrations by James Valcq.

American Folklore Theatre is a nonprofit professional art organization that produces original musical shows in repertory from June through August in the Peninsula State The Shallows Resort Banner Park amphitheater.  Shows continue during the fall at Door Community Auditorium, 3926 Hwy. 42, Fish Creek, as well as town halls.

"Victory Farm" show times are 7:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. Fridays and 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. Saturdays. More information is available by calling American Folklore Theatre, 920-854-6117.
