What A Place!
Chanticleer Guest House!
By Donna Marie Pocius

Stay at the Chanticleer Guest House during the holidays, when this bed and breakfast (B&B) inn welcomes guests with festive dcor including Christmas trees in all guest suites.
Chanticleer Guest House, 4072 Cherry Rd., Sturgeon Bay, is a one-of-a-kind B&B with accommodations housed inside a transformed 1915 barn and farmhouse. The inn sits on a 70-acre rural property dotted with orchards, gardens and a sheep farm.
The innkeepers began the time-consuming task of setting and decorating tall Christmas trees in the common areas as well as in each guest suite and cabin in November.
"We love the holiday season, and we deck out Chanticleer in full holiday dcor," says Darrin Day, who is innkeeper at Chanticleer Guest House in partnership with Bryon Groeschl.
Chanticleer offers guest choice of accommodations: four suites in the barn, four in the farmhouse as well as four cabins. Each has a private bathroom.
After buying the property from the Murphy family in 1993, the Day and Groeschl renovated the barn in conjunction with a local builder. They maintained some original features including flooring on the second floor. And from one of the barn's upper-level suites, the Meadows Suite, guests can see the ceiling's original wood shake shingles. Some of the old wood beams throughout the barn are original, too.
Each room is decorated in a different way-comfortable and classy as opposed to fussy. Antiques are part of the decorating scheme. But they are not overdone. Breakfast, prepared by the innkeepers, is delivered to guests' rooms in baskets. And the innkeepers say they have good business relationships with restaurants in Door County and often contact them, on behalf of their guests, to make reservations or request that dinner be delivered.
Day and Groeschl celebrated 18 years as innkeepers in 2012. Day describes their philosophy as follows: "Treat everyone who walks through the door with respect. After 18 years, it has made being an innkeeper a fun career, and it also makes guests enjoy coming back," he says.

Here's Something to Do!
Get in the Holiday Spirit during
these Holiday Events!
By Donna Marie Pocius Special to DoorCountyNavigator.com
Door County is a great place to shop at holiday time. But that's not the only thing to do.
Take a break from browsing wonderful gifts made by artists and local families to explore a Christmas and holiday-inspired class, concert or event.
For example, the Inn at Cedar Crossing, Sturgeon Bay, is hosting a gingerbread house class from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. Dec. 15 and 22 and a Christmas Tea on Dec. 16 and 23.
Also in Sturgeon Bay, Third Avenue Playhouse is staging "Santaland Diaries" at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on select Thursdays through Saturdays through Dec. 31.
In Fish Creek, "Once upon a Christmas" will offer Christmas tree lighting, caroling and a visit by Mrs. Claus at 6 p.m. Dec. 16 at the historic Noble House. People can follow a candlelight procession to Old Gibraltar Town Hall for a light supper.
Speaking of Old Gibraltar Town Hall, it will be the site for American Folklore Theatre holiday concerts running Dec. 28 to Dec. 31.
The Hagen family will perform at Third Avenue Playhouse Dec. 22.
Visit the host organizations' Web sites for details on times and fees. |
