A Holiday Message from Jane Pallas, Board President

While the holiday season is in full swing, I am taking this opportunity to be a bit reflective to say thank you for making To Celebrate Life Breast Cancer Foundation the stellar non-profit that it is.

We began 2012 with a theme - JUST SAY YES and that is exactly what you have done!

You supported us financially by saying YES with your generosity. You said YES and you gave your time, talent and energy. Without all of you, we would neither be who we are nor have been able to make a difference in the lives of so many people living with breast cancer. On behalf of the entire Board of Directors, I thank you for your confidence in us - truly a great gift for this season.

On a personal note, thank you for the opportunity to serve as your Board President. It has been an honor that I cherish. As my term comes to an end, I know you will be in good hands with my successor, Jeanne Capurro, and will support her just as you have supported me.

I wish you and your families Happy Holidays and good health in the New Year!

With pride and gratitude,

Jane Pallas, President

Board of Directors

I have searched and searched but the words can not be found to describe what a wonderful event you put on. Every aspect of Rally in itself was wonderful and when put together it was like an artist turning beautiful colors into a masterpiece. The event was a total success put together with love and talent by each one of you. Thank you for your time, patience, and commitment to a cause that is close to us all.

Thank you so much for the wonderful event you guys put on yesterday. It was a beautiful and relaxing fun day of tennis and events.

The volunteers were so very gracious and helpful in every way. What a great group of people. I hope you raised a lot of money for To Celebrate Life!

Stepping Out To Celebrate Life - Sophisticated Ladies
Stepping Out 2012

Some say it was the "best Stepping Out ever!"

Energy was high as 35 sophisticated ladies - and one very dashing gentleman - made their inspirational runway debut at the 17th annual Stepping Out To Celebrate Life on September 29th.

Guests stepped back to the jazzy 1930's, enjoyed a gourmet dinner catered by McCalls, and raised their paddles to generously support the Foundation's Fund a Need for emergency services.

After bidding on fabulous live and silent auction items, guests danced the night away to the Big Band music of the Richard Olson Orchestra.

A special thank you and congratulations to Stepping Out Chair, Julie Ballard, and the many dedicated volunteers who donated thousands of hours to make this amazing evening happen!

Comments from our guests

It was a wonderful event, and all of you volunteering your time deserve special recognition.

I was so moved that night. Tears. Joy. Tears. Gratitude. When the time came I raised my paddle to contribute, a donation much above what I had planned to give.

This was my first year and I am amazed at the volunteers that made this event possible. Fund a Need just made my jaw drop.

I am blessed to be associated with such an incredible nonprofit.

Face of the Foundation - Fran Yacko

If you've ever participated in, attended, or volunteered for Rally, you know Fran Yacko.

She's not only this month's Face of the Foundation, she's the Face of Rally to Celebrate Life! A dedicated volunteer, she first attended Rally in 1992 and played in the tournament. In those days, the event was called Rally for the Cause and benefited the American Cancer Society. Fran was so taken with Rally, she knew she wanted to be a part of it, and in 1993 she started volunteering.

"I was low man on the totem pole," she says. But she jumped in as head of the silent auction.

When Rally became part of To Celebrate Life Breast Cancer Foundation in 2006, Fran was living in Florida part of the year and working on Rally when she was in the Bay Area. But then she started spending more time in Florida and felt she couldn't do a good job working long distance, so she took a break from Rally. "It was sad," she says. "I tried to get something similar going in Florida, but it wasn't the same."

When she realized that 2012 was the 20th anniversary of Rally, she offered to serve as chair and reunite her old committee for a celebratory event. Of the 30 people she contacted, more than 20 said yes. Thanks to their efforts, and Fran's commuting from Florida to Marin for meetings, the day was a huge success.

Fran credits her team, calling them a well-oiled machine. "For us, it's a labor of love, it totally comes from the heart," she says.

Esurance Tennis Classic goes international

Spectators enjoyed a new international format at the Esurance Tennis Classic on September 21-23 at Harbor Point Tennis Club as world class men and women professionals competed in the World Cup Team Challenge: USA vs The World.

The USA's players included World No. 1 Men's Doubles Team and Olympic gold winners, Mike and Bob Bryan, Justin Gimelstob, Lindsay Davenport, Gigi Fernandez, Corina Morariu and Murphy Jensen. The World players included Wayne Ferriera, Mark Knowles, Rennae Stubbs, Conchita Martinez and Liga Dekmeijere.

A significant portion of the proceeds from this annual event benefits To Celebrate Life Breast Cancer Foundation.

Breast Cancer Emergency Fund - a 2012 Grantee

Many people with breast cancer have inadequate or no health insurance. Most will be unable to work throughout their treatment, adding a huge financial toll to an already difficult struggle. Breast Cancer Emergency Fund helps people in need continue life-extending medical treatments, avoid utility shut-off, prevent eviction and maintain stable housing while they battle breast cancer.

Rhoda: A BCEF client's story

Rhoda is a single mother of two young children. She lost her steady job when she RHODA missed too much work for breast cancer treatment. She found hourly part-time work to cover household expenses and medical insurance, but Rhoda was soon debilitated by chemotherapy and radiation. Without income, she could no longer maintain her COBRA expenses which included her children's medical coverage. She faced a desperate decision: in order to maintain her breast cancer care, Rhoda would need to enroll in a reduced insurance plan that excluded her children.

Breast Cancer Emergency Fund immediately stepped in to cover the family's COBRA payments for several months. Next they connected Rhoda to a medical social worker who enrolled her and her children in a state-subsidized medical plan that would provide long-term coverage. Finally, BCEF helped keep the family housed during Rhoda's most intensive cancer treatment. Her recovery will be long but BCEF helped lighten the journey and provided security for her family.
