So Close to Home: A True Story of an American Family's Fight for Survival During World War  II

The Friends of the Sandwich Public Library invite you to an exciting event with author Michael Tougias (Finest Hours) as he talks about about his newest book, So Close to Home. Many of us have never heard this true story about a German U-boat attacking a freighter in the Gulf of Mexico.  In 1942, the Down family were returning to the states from Central America on a freighter, the Heredia. Of the sixty-two people on board,  a handful were civilians and children.  The ship exploded and in the chaos that followed each family member had to find their own path to survival. Including original, unpublished material from Commander Erich Werdemann's war diary, Tougias also chronicles the mission of the U-boat and its commander's decisions in the Gulf of Mexico.

Author Kim Wright
Last Ride to Graceland

We're excited to announce that author Kim Wright will join our book club in person to talk about her very entertaining book, Last Ride to Graceland!

Blues musician Cory Ainsworth is barely scraping by after her mother's death when she discovers a priceless piece of rock 'n' roll memorabilia hidden away in a shed out back of the family's coastal South Carolina home: Elvis Presley's Stutz Blackhawk, its interior a time capsule of the singer's last day on earth.
A backup singer for the King, Cory's mother, Honey, was at Graceland the day Elvis died. She quickly returned home to Beaufort and married her high school sweetheart. Yearning to uncover the secrets of her mother's past - and possibly her own identity - Cory decides to drive the car back to Memphis and turn it over to Elvis' estate, retracing the exact route her mother took thirty-seven years earlier.
As she winds her way through the sprawling deep south with its quaint towns and long stretches of open road, the burning question in Cory's mind - who is my father? - takes a backseat to the truth she learns about her complicated mother, the minister's daughter who spent a lifetime struggling to conceal the consequences of a single year of rebellion.

We hope you can join us for what promises to be a lively discussion!  Reg. $16.00, Book Club Price $12.80

The House at the Edge of Night by Catherine Banner
From Kathy: I loved this book very much, it's an incredibly special story, completely enchanting and a little bit magical.
On a tiny island off the coast of Italy, Amedeo Esposito, a foundling from Florence, thinks he has found a place where, finally, he can belong. Surrounded by the sound of the sea and the scent of bougainvillea, he and the beautiful, fiercely intelligent Pina begin their lives together. I'm Thinking of Ending Things by Iaim Reid
From Kathy:  I am almost afraid to recommend this book!! This tale grabs you right from the start and gets stranger and more terrifying by the page! The narrator, known only as "the girlfriend", is driving with her new boyfriend, Jake, to meet his parents at the family farm. They haven't dated for very long, but she's already thinking of calling it quits. Jake seems stranger by the page, and his parents and the farm seem just a bit off.  When the girlfriend decides to explore the creepy cellar you want to scream "Don't go down there!!!!" just like watching a scarey movie...I guarantee you will not want to put this book down, but you may be too frightened to continue!! However -  if you dare - I'm Thinking of Ending Things is an amazingly good psychological thriller!

Decades later, Alma is nearing the end of her long and eventful life. As Irina and Seth forge a friendship, they become intrigued by a series of mysterious gifts and letters sent to Alma, eventually learning about Ichimei and this extraordinary secret passion that has endured for nearly seventy years. Our Souls at Night by Kent Haruf
From Kathy: Like Haruf's earlier novels, Plainsong, Eventide and Benediction, Our Souls at Night is set in the fictional east Colorado town of Holt. In classic Haruf style, the language is simple - he gets to his storytelling point without a single wasted breath. The conflict begins on the first page when an elderly widower, Louis, is paid a visit by his widowed neighbor, Addie. Now that they are both old and alone, Addie would like to know if Louis wouldn't mind coming over to occasionally spend the night in bed with her, for the company. He thinks about it and decides to take her up on her offer. The scenes of Louis packing his dopp kit and arranging his route so as not to be seen are charming. Of course people in town notice the overnights, and comments and judgments are made. Haruf always writes about seemingly simple, ordinary people with such depth and care - you will just love these two people! Of course, fate intervenes and hard choices have to be made. This is a quiet and moving novel about aging, love, family and regret. I loved it, and I think you will, too.  $15.00

The Last September by Nina DeGramont
We love this book!! With locations on the Cape, Amherst, and Boulder, it is a love story, a murder mystery, and much more.  When Brett's charismatic husband Charlie is murdered, she is determined to find out who is to blame. Set against the desolate autumn beauty of Cape Cod, The Last September is a riveting emotional puzzle that takes readers inside the psyche of a woman facing the meaning of love and loyalty.  Nina is a wonderful writer and we guarantee you will be hooked from the first paragraph.    $15.95

Enchanted August by Brenda Bowen
"Hopewell Cottage.
Little Lost Island, Maine.
Old, pretty cottage to rent on a small island.
Springwater, blueberries, sea glass.  August."
So reads an ad on Lottie Wilkes and Rose Arbuthnot's children's preschool bulletin board, and it proves an irresistible option for several of the over-scheduled moms.
When the women arrive on the island, they are transformed by the salt air; the breathtaking views; the long, lazy days; and the happy routine of lobster, corn, and cocktails on the wraparound porch. By the time of the late-August blue moon, real life and its complications have finally fallen far, far away. For on this idyllic island they gradually begin to open up: to one another and to the possibilities of lives quite different from the ones they've been leading. Change can't be that hard, can it?
Enchanted August updates the classic  Enchanted April in this perfect summer novel.
Available July 5 $16.00

The Fishermen by Chig Obioma
Four middle-class Nigerian brothers, Ikenna, Boja, Obembe and Benjamin, decide to go fishing in a river. They do this without their mother's knowledge, carefully hiding away their fishing kit when they come home. Their career lasts six weeks before they are discovered by a neighbor, who tells their mother. One day at the river they meet the local oddball, Abulu, who has the power of prophecy, and who predicts that Ikenna, the eldest, will be killed by one of his brothers; by a "fisherman". It is from this simple, almost mythological conceit that Chigozie Obioma's debut novel grows, gaining complexity and power as it rises to its heartbreaking climax. Shortlisted for the Man Booker List, The Fishermen has brought comparisons to the works of famous Nigerian novelist Chinua Achebe. Available July 5 $15.99

Clara: The (Mostly) True Story of the Rhinoceros Who Dazzled Kings, Inspired Artists, and Won the Hearts of Everyone by Emily Arnold McCully
We love Clara! This fascinating, informative, and touching picture book by a Caldecott Medalist is based on the true story of an eighteenth-century rhino who toured Europe and started a sensation! Clara will fascinate young animal lovers, history buffs in the making, and kids interested in geography, as they follow a rhinoceros on her journey across Europe.
In detailed illustrations, McCully shows Clara being introduced to Louis XV of France, Frederick the Great of Germany, and others willing to pay for a chance to stroke her soft lip. Her owner, a Dutch sea captain, keeps Clara fed (she eats 100 pounds of hay and 30 loaves of bread a day!) and watered (she drinks 14 buckets of water and beer) and takes loving care of her until her death 17 years later.  Ages 4-8 $17.99

What do you do when you're so tiny that the bigger ocean creatures think you might even adorable?
An itsy-bitsy, glasses-wearing fish is minding his own business when a playful (and hungry) octopus snatches him right up. Luckily, this poor little guy is not quite as innocent as he seems and he has a BIG surprise up his sleeve! Told with wit, a wink, and a delightfully dark sense of humor, Poor Little Guy celebrates the very smallest...and all of their giant victories.  Ages 3-5 $16.99

Blue & Bertie by Kristyna Litten

Chapter Books:
Towers Falling  by Jewell Parker Rhodes
From Gail: Having experienced 9/11 close up and through the eyes of young children in New York City in 2001, I appreciate what an extraordinary job Jewell Parker Rhodes has done with extremely difficult material in this book.  To recreate the physical and emotional damage that befell us all on that day, and to then show the resilience, bravery, and support of the entire country is just a beautiful way to share the history and and memories to Deja, Ben, and Sabeen who were born years after 9/11. Each child, from different backgrounds, found meaning and strength in this History "lesson". Ages 9-12 Available July 12 $16.99

When Friendship Followed me Home
From Gail: The dog on the cover of this middle school book makes you think it is a cheery book, and while there is plenty of fun inside, it is also about loss and love that aren't so cheerful on the surface.  Ben Coffin, a former foster kid has finally found his perfect family, to which he then adds Flip, an abandoned dog.  Ben also befriends Halley, the librarian's colorful daughter. Together the three find ways to share their life experiences with others even though their lives are falling apart. They help kids with difficulty reading by having them read to Flip, who is so appreciative he gives them "high fours" (he doesn't have 5 fingers). They write a story ("The Magic Box") and build a model of Coney Island in 1905. All of this keeps them going through illness, deaths, loneliness, and brings them to see their self-worth through the friendship of others. Ages 8-12
$16.99
