My Dog's a Chicken

We are so delighted that Susan Monanari will be coming to Sandwich to talk about My Dog's a Chicken!  Some of you might remember that we featured this delightful picture book in our February 2016 newsletter.  It turns out that Susan's mom lives in Plymouth and is a faithful reader of our newsletter. She told her daughter (who lives in Savannah) about it!  Susan then called us to see if we would be interested in doing an event with her. Of course, we said "Yes!"  Bring your young ones to the library for this fun event - complete with a "chicken craft"! We can't wait!

About the book: Lula Mae wants a puppy, but times are hard and she'll just have to make do. Her family has plenty of chickens, so she decides maybe a chicken can be a dog, and names her Pookie.

We are happy to welcome author Robin Smith-Johnson to the bookshop to talk about Cape Cod tales of shipwrecks, murders, hauntings and more! Ancient Wampanoag legends like Granny Squannit and Princess Scargo are as familiar as tales of pirates and explorers, including "Black Sam" Bellamy and Donald Baxter Macmillan.

Robin works as the newsroom librarian at the Cape Cod Times and teaches in the English department at Cape Cod Community College. She is the author of a book of poetry titled Dream of the Antique Dealer's Daughter.

Two If By Sea

We are thrilled to welcome Jacquelyn Mitchard (Deep End of the Ocean) back to the bookshop to talk about and sign copies of her new novel, Two If By Sea.

Author Wiley Cash (A Land More Kind Than Home) describes Mitchard's new novel:
"A day after losing his wife and unborn child in a tsunami in Australia, American Frank Mercy rescues a mysterious young boy from the floodwaters. What happens next offers Mercy the opportunity to heal his new wounds while opening old ones. This sprawling family saga is a lot of things - a finely drawn character study, a transcontinental thriller, a portrait of grief and loss - but, most importantly, it is a very, very good book. Although it brings to mind the work of writers like Gail Godwin and Richard Flanagan, this is the kind of novel that only Jacquelyn Mitchard can write: a literary page-turner that is as propulsive as it resonant, as hard to define as it is to put down."  Wow!

Cynthia Riggs
Bloodroot: A Martha's Vineyard Mystery

We are so happy to welcome Cynthia Riggs back to the bookshop to talk about her newest mystery, Bloodroot!

Cynthia Riggs and her 92-year-old poet/sleuth Victoria Trumbull will transport readers to beautiful Martha's Vineyard in her latest mystery.  It's just another day at the dentist's office for sympathetic, strong-willed Victoria Trumbull when fellow patient, wealthy Mrs. Wilmington, dies. It's an unfortunate, though seemingly not murderous incident, but the receptionist is hysterical, so one of the dental assistants offers to drive her home. But after making a quick pit stop, he finds her body floating in the harbor. With the police shorthanded due to an upcoming presidential visit, it's up to Victoria to take on the case. As she wrestles with her ex-son-in-law, a $3 million will, and a deadly dental clinic, Mrs. Trumbull discovers that nothing in the case is quite what it seems.

Bloodroot is the latest in Cynthia Riggs' longstanding Martha's Vineyard mystery series, filled with delightful characters and charming descriptions of the beautiful island. $25.99, our price $20.79

About the author: "One should know by now never to underestimate Ms. Riggs. Educated as a geologist, she taught at the Annapolis Sailing School, lived on a 44-foot houseboat for 12 years while running the Chesapeake Bay Ferry Boat Company, was a rigger at Martha's Vineyard Shipyard, and in her late 60s, she earned an MFA in creative writing from Vermont College, and has, in each ensuing year, produced one of the Vineyard-based, Victoria Trumbull mysteries."

Randall Peffer
Where Divers Dare: The Hunt for the Last U-Boat
This is the gripping true account of the search for German U-boat U-550, the last unfound, diveable wreck of a U-boat off Nantucket, and the battle in which it was sunk. On April 16, 1944, the SS Pan Pennsylvania was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine U-550 off the coast of Nantucket. In return, the sub was driven to the surface with depth charges, and then sent to the bottom of the ocean by three destroyer escorts. In 2012, a team found it more than 300 feet below the surface. This is the story of their twenty-year quest to find this "Holy Grail" of deep-sea diving and their tenacious efforts to dive on this treacherous wreck--and of the stunning clash at sea that sealed its doom and brought the Battle of the Atlantic to America's doorstep.

Randall Peffer is the author of eight nonfiction books, most with a nautical angle, as well as nine crime/suspense novels. His first book, Watermen, is a documentary of the lives of the Chesapeake's fishermen. It won the Baltimore Sun's Critic's Choice Award and was Maryland Book of the Year. The son of a career naval officer, Peffer holds a 100-ton masters license and has logged over one hundred thousand miles at sea. He teaches writing and literature at Phillips Academy, Andover.

This book will be a wonderful Father's Day gift! $28.00

Book Club Discussion of
Nobody's Fool by Richard Russo

Richard Russo's slyly funny and moving novel follows the unexpected operation of grace in a deadbeat town in upstate New York and in the life of one of its unluckiest citizens, Sully, who has been doing the wrong thing triumphantly for fifty years.  Published in 1994, we are re-visiting this book in preparation for Russo's new book, Everybody's Fool, which is a follow-up to Nobody's Fool.

[Save the date!: Richard Russo will be talking about Everybody's Fool at the Sandwich Town Hall on July 27. This is a ticketed event, and information can be found on our website by clicking here.]

The Tumbling Turner Sisters

We invite you to come to the Sandwich Public Library to meet best-selling author Juliette Fay(The Shortest Way Home, Shelter Me).  Juliette will give an illustrated talk about her fascinating new novel, The Tumbling Turner Sisters and will also sign copies.

About the book: When their father loses his job as the result of an industrial accident, the young Turner sisters have to come up with a way to keep the family housed and fed. In 1919, there aren't a lot of options for women, but the Turner girls have moxie. Vaudeville is hugely popular, and the sisters come up with an acrobatic act that takes them to every little town and village across upstate New York.

The Tumbling Turner Sisters was inspired by the life of her vaudevillian great-grandfather.

This event is free, but to help us plan, please register at Sandwichpubliclibrary.com and click on Juliette's event on their Events Calendar.

The book comes out on June 14: Reg. price $24.99, our price $19.99

Tightwads on the Loose: A Seven Year Pacific Odyssey

We're looking forward to voyager Wendy Hinman's visit to the bookshop to talk about and sign copies of her book, Tightwads on the Loose: A Seven Year Pacific Odyssey.
Tightwads on the Loose
tells the story of Wendy and Garth, who bought a 31-foot wooden boat that fits their budget better than it fits Garth's large frame and set sail for an open-ended voyage, never imagining they'd be gone seven years, or cover 34,000 miles at the pace of a fast walk. They live without most "necessities" and learn that teamwork and a sense of humor matter most as they face endless "character-building opportunities."  Book price $14.95

Kristen Harnisch
California Wife

Kristen's earlier novel, The Vintner's Daughter, was a big hit with our book club, and remains a best seller.  The California Wife is both a sequel and a stand-alone and begins in the same scene in which her first novel ended. Harnisch takes readers back to 1897, when Sara Thibault has returned to France following the devastating end to her relationship with Philippe Lemieux, the vintner with whom she fell in love in California. Reunited and soon to be wed, Sara and Philippe struggle to manage two vineyards, his much esteemed Eagle's Run in Napa Valley and her humble family vineyard, St. Martin, in the Loire Valley.

Kristen Harnisch drew upon her experiences living in San Francisco and visiting the Loire Valley and Paris to create the stories for The California Wife and her first novel, The Vintner's Daughter. Ms. Harnisch has a degree in economics from Villanova University and currently lives in Connecticut with her husband and three children.  $17.95

The Children
by Ann Leary
The Children
is the story of a wealthy, but unconventional New England family, told from the perspective of a reclusive 29-year-old who has a secret (and famous) life on the Internet.

Charlotte Maynard rarely leaves her mother's home, the sprawling Connecticut lake house that belonged to her late stepfather, Whit Whitman, and the generations of Whitmans before him. While Charlotte and her sister, Sally, grew up at Lakeside, their stepbrothers, Spin and Perry, were welcomed as weekend guests. Now the grown boys own the estate, which Joan occupies by their grace - and a provision in the family trust.

When Spin, the youngest and favorite of all the children, brings his fianc home for the summer, the entire family is intrigued. The beautiful and accomplished Laurel Atwood breathes new life into this often comically rarefied world. But as the wedding draws near, flaws surface in the family's polite veneer. $26.99, our price $21.59

Before the Fall: A Novel by Noah Hawley
from Kathy:
On a foggy summer night, eleven people--ten privileged, one down-on-his-luck painter - depart Martha's Vineyard headed for New York. Sixteen minutes later, the plane crashes into the ocean. The only survivors are the painter, Scott Burroughs, and JJ, a four-year-old boy, who is now the last remaining member of a wealthy and powerful media mogul's family.

The chapters weave between the aftermath of the tragedy and the backstories of the passengers and crew members. Was it merely dumb chance that so many influential people perished? Or was something far more sinister at work? In the middle of the resulting storm of media outrage and accusations, the relationship between Scott and the young boy is really the heart of this story. A suspenseful, well-told page-turner!
$26.00, our price $20.80

Goodnight Beautiful Women by Anna Noyes
From Ellen: I am admittedly not a huge fan of short stories, however, Goodnight Beautiful Women had me turning the pages as if it was a gripping novel. The stories are mysterious and poignant and encompass all forms of relationships - focusing on young women making their way in a tough world. Anna Noyes is an extraordinary first time writer, and I look forward to her future work.
$24.00, our price $19.11

City of Mirrors by Justin Cronin
from Kathy: Justin Cronin's trilogy reaches a thrilling conclusion with The City of Mirrors. The Twelve have been destroyed and the hundred-year reign of darkness that descended upon the world has ended. The survivors are stepping outside their walls, determined to build society anew-and daring to dream of a hopeful future.

But far from them, in a dead metropolis, he waits: Zero. The First. Father of the Twelve.

The City of Mirrors is a lengthy read, but it never feels like it bogs down. Cronin moves us across centuries and through a host of characters with ease, making them all feel fully alive and captivating. There's much to love here from the descriptions of the virals and their attacks to his vision of a post-apocalyptic United States, how much is lost and how quickly it all falls apart - but how resilience and determination bring it back.

If you're anxiously awaiting or thinking about jumping into the series for the first time, it's so worth it!!
$28.00, our price $22.40

Barkskins by Annie Proulx
from Kathy: If you're in the mood to settle in with an epic adventure, this is the book for you! It starts out in the late seventeenth century with French paupers Ren Sel and Charles Duquet arriving in New France (an area at that time stretched from modern day Canada to Louisiana). They are known as 'Barkskins' or wood-cutters indentured to a seigneur until they have earned their right to a plot of land through relentless, hard work. Ren Sel serves out his time, but Charles Duquet runs away to seek his fortune in his own brutal way. The story then follows the fate of the two sets of descendants over the next three hundred years. One family originates from Ren Sel and a Mi'kmaw woman, while the others marry into European families and benefit from Duquet's business skill, building an empire on the forests they are ravaging for their timber.

Annie Proulx creates characters who are so vivid - in their greed, lust, vengefulness, or their simple compassion and hope - that we follow them with fierce attention.

Available June 14  $32.00, our price $25.60
New Nonfiction:

New England Bound by Wendy Warren
Wendy Warren's explosive book tells the lives of  many long-forgotten enslaved Africans and Native Americans in the seventeenth century. Based on new evidence, Warren links the growth of the northern colonies to the Atlantic slave trade, demonstrating how New England's economy derived its vitality from the profusion of slave-trading ships coursing through its ports. Warren documents how Indians were systematically sold into slavery in the West Indies and reveals how colonial families like the Winthrops were motivated not only by religious freedom but also by their slave-trading investments. New England Bound punctures the myth of a shining "City on a Hill," forcefully demonstrating that the history of American slavery can no longer confine itself to the nineteenth-century South. $29.95

Tribe by Sebastian Junger
Sebastian Junger begins his new book with an observation about a peculiar phenomenon in frontier America: From the late 17th to the late 19th century, hundreds of white settlers were seized by Indians, and almost all chose to remain with their captors when offered a chance to return to their families.  Junger postulates that the modern equivalents of those white captives are war veterans who come home longing for the intimacy of life with their platoon or company - their military tribe, so to speak. He says the lack of closeness and sense of purpose in civilian life may account for their extremely high rate of post-traumatic stress disorder.

He proposes that many of the ills in modern Western society are due to the loss of tribal sentiments lying deep in our evolutionary past. We remain hunter-gatherers in our souls while our bodies (and minds) dwell in a culture that, for all its material blessings, is inimical to tribal virtues: cooperation rather than competition, affinity rather than alienation, a spirit of sharing rather than one of rugged individualism.

Fascinating! $22.00

Bogs & Fens by Ronald B. Davis
If you're a nature lover, it may come as no surprise to you that bogs and fens (peatlands) are among the most fascinating and beautiful places to visit. This attractive and informative new guide covers 155 of the species most likely to be discovered in these areas and includes stunning photographs of 98 of them. It also includes an invaluable guide to 78 peatlands with boardwalks across our region.

Grunt: The Curious Science of Humans at War by Mary Roach
Mary Roach (Stiff, Gulp, Packing for Mars, Spook) is brilliant at describing, often with humor, the science behind things we never knew we were interested in.  Here she explores the science of keeping human beings intact, awake, sane, uninfected, and uninfested in the bizarre and extreme circumstances of war. She answers questions not found in any other book on the military: Why is DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) interested in ducks? How is a wedding gown like a bomb suit? Why are shrimp more dangerous to sailors than sharks? Take a tour of duty with Roach, and you'll never see our nation's defenders in the same way again.  Available June 7 $26.95
New in Paperback:
The Rocks by Peter Nichols
From Kathy and Vicky: In paperback, just in time for summer reading! This fabulous book grabbed us both from the very first chapter! It is so beautifully written, and the characters and setting on the island of Mallorca are fascinating.
The story starts with a shocking scene, then moves back in time 50 years to reveal the tragic incident that led a young couple to divorce and rarely see each other again despite the fact that they have lived in the same small town all those years. The story plays out over three generations of family and friends against a stunning backdrop of sun and sea. A totally engrossing summer novel neither of us could put down so we both wanted to tell you how much we liked it!   $16.00

Circling the Sun by Paula McLain
From Elizabeth M:
The author of The Paris Wife once again produces an amazing story of a strong willed and remarkable woman.  With this novel based on the life of Beryl Markham, McLain captures the magic of life in Kenya in the 1920's where Markham was raised by her father on a horse farm. Markham became the first female horse trainer in Africa and later became the first aviator to fly across the Atlantic from England to North America.  This is an eloquently written story of a complicated woman who, though she married three times, was most in love with Africa and with men who were not available to her.  Loved this book!!
(this is a total staff favorite!) $16.00

The Girl in the Spider's Web by David Lagercrantz
This new installment in the Girl With the Dragon Tattoo series was written not by Stieg Larsson (who died of a heart attack at the age of 50 in 2004), but by a Swedish journalist and author David Lagercrantz at the request of Stieg Larsson's estate.  Salander and Blomkvist have survived intact and are just as compelling as ever.
