Author Call-In!

This month, we will feature a new book by Sara Gruen, author of the bestselling novel Water for Elephants.

"At the Water's Edge is a rich, beautiful novel. Compulsively readable, it is at once a gripping love story, a profound examination of the effects of war on ordinary women, and a compelling portrait of female friendship. While delving into powerful themes, Sara Gruen never loses sight of what matters: her characters. This story of one privileged young woman, coming of age in a time of impossible upheaval and terrible choices, will keep you riveted until the very last page." - review from Kristin Hannah, author of The Nightingale.

Mystery Author Panel & Book Signing with
Sisters in Crime
Saturday, February 6  2-3:30 pm
Sandwich Public Library

Mystery lovers - mark your calendars!  You won't want to miss this panel discussion featuring some wonderful authors from the group "Sisters in Crime"!  The event will take place at the Sandwich Public Library.  Here are the panelists:

Kate Flora: Attorney Kate Flora's sixteen books include seven Thea Kozak mysteries, four gritty police procedurals including Playing God, The Angel of Knowlton Park, Redemption, and And Grant You Peace(which won the 2015 Maine Literary Award for Crime Fiction) ; Finding Amy was a 2007 Edgar nominee and has been optioned for a movie. Kate developed her fascination with people's criminal tendencies as a lawyer in the Maine attorney general's office. When she isn't writing, or teaching writing at Grub Street in Boston, she can be found in her garden, waging battle against critters, pests, and her husband's lawnmower.

Arlene Kay: Arlene Kay spent twenty years as a senior executive with the federal government where she was known as a most unconventional public servant. Her experiences in offices around the nation and the characters she encountered inform a series of mysteries including
Intrusion, Die Laughing and the Swann Series (Swann Dive; Mantrap and Gilt Trip). She is currently writing the fourth installment of the Swann series.

Maureen Milliken: Maureen is news editor at the Kennebec Journal and Morning Sentinel newspapers in central Maine. She has been a journalist for 30 years. Her debut mystery novel, Cold Hard News, featuring small town newspaper editor, Bernie O'Dea, was published in June 2015, and she is working on the second in the series. She is also author of The Cranky Editor's Guide to Usage and The Afterlife Survey. She is a regular blogger on Maine Crime Writers.

Leslie Wheeler (moderator): Leslie is an award-winning author of books about American history and biographies.  She has written three "living history" mysteries: Murder at Plimoth Plantation, Murder at Gettysburg, and Murder at Spouters Point. She has published numerous short stories, and is about to end a six-year tenure as a co-editor/publisher at Level Best Books. She is a founding member of the New England Crime Bake Committee, and chairs the Al Blanchard Short Crime Fiction Contest, sponsored by the Crime Bake Committee.

This event is co-sponsored with the Sandwich Public Library and Sisters in Crime, a group of writers whose mission is to promote the ongoing advancement, recognition and professional development of women crime writers. We are quite proud to announce that the afternoon event will also include their presentation to Titcomb's Bookshop of a "We Love Bookstores" award!!

Kathryn Aalto, Author of
The Natural World of Winnie the Pooh: A Walk Through the Forest that Inspired the Hundred Acre Wood
Saturday, March 12    2pm
Heritage Museums & Gardens
Join us at Heritage Museums & Gardens to discover the real world of Winnie-the-Pooh!
We are delighted to welcome author, landscape designer and historian Kathryn Aalto as she talks about her new book, The Natural World of Winnie-the-Pooh, which explores the magical landscapes where Winnie the Pooh and his friends live and play.

The Hundred Acre Wood was inspired by Ashdown Forest, a 6,000 acre wildlife haven in southeast England. You will discover how Milne's childhood connection with nature and his role as a father influenced his famous stories, and how his close collaboration with illustrator E. H. Shepard brought those stories to life. This charming book also serves as a guide to the plants, animals, and places of the remarkable Ashdown Forest. In a delightful narrative, enriched with Shepard's original illustrations, hundreds of color photographs, and Milne's own words, you will rediscover your favorite characters and the magical place they called home.

The talk will be followed by a book signing, light refreshments, and an opportunity to explore the Heritage gardens so that all can be inspired by the same types of trees and landscapes found here as in Ashdown forest.
New Fiction:
My Name is Lucy Barton by Elizabeth Strout
From Kathy: I loved Strout's earlier novels, The Burgess Boys and Olive Kitteridge. Her new novel may be spare, but it is profound.  Strout explores a mother-daughter bond during a hospital visit.  Lucy Barton is recovering slowly from what should have been a simple operation. Her mother, with whom she hasn't spoken for many years, comes to see her. Gentle gossip about people from Lucy's childhood in Amgash, Illinois, seems to reconnect them, but just below the surface lie the tension and longing that have informed every aspect of Lucy's life: her escape from her troubled family, her desire to become a writer, her marriage, her love for her two daughters.  This is such a moving portrait of what can often be a complicated relationship.  It's a book that will stay with you - perfect for January reflecting. (available Jan. 12) $26.00, our price $20.80

The Past by Tessa Hadley
Four siblings gather at the crumbling house of their grandparents in the English countryside to decide what to do with the house now that their grandparents are gone.  Of course there is a lot more going on - tensions beneath the surface, etc. A well written family drama. $26.99, our price $21.60

The Expatriates
by Janice Y.K. Lee
From the author of The Piano Teacher, Janice Lee's new novel is about three very different American women living in the same small expat community in Hong Kong.
Mercy, a young Korean American and recent Columbia graduate, is adrift, undone by a terrible incident in her recent past. Hilary, a wealthy housewife, is haunted by her struggle to have a child, something she believes could save her foundering marriage. Meanwhile, Margaret, once a happily married mother of three, questions her maternal identity in the wake of a shattering loss. As each woman struggles with her own demons, their lives collide. Atmospheric, moving, and compelling! (available Jan. 12) $27.00, our price $21.60

New Fiction in Paperback:
Song of Hartgrove Hall by Natasha Solomons
From Elizabeth M: Fans of Solomons' House of Tyneford will welcome this dual narrative set in the English countryside.  The story opens in 1946 as the family returns to Hartgrove Hall which has continued to decline during its use by the military during the war.  In the story 50 years later, we follow the life of one of the sons, Harry Fox Hall, who is mourning the loss of his beloved wife, Edie.  The recurring themes of love triangles, music and family secrets create a tale that moves smoothly back and forth in time will hold your interest until the end of the book. (more available Jan. 5) $16.00

The Secret Wisdom of the Earth by Christopher Scotton
This book is a favorite of everyone on our staff. We are very excited to be able to share it with even more readers now that it's in paperback! The Secret Wisdom of the Earth is a wonderfully deep novel to sink into - with characters that will stay with you.  Set in a small Appalachian mining town, 14-year-old Kevin and his grieving mother are sent to live with Kevin's grandfather after witnessing the death of his younger brother in a terrible home accident.  This grandfather bears a strong resemblance to Atticus Finch in To Kill a Mockingbird, and you feel the influence of that wonderful novel throughout. Kevin quickly falls in with a half-wild kid named Buzzy Fink who schools him in the mysteries and power of the woods. Beautifully written, it contains both exciting action sequences as well as contemplative passages. (available Jan. 5) $14.99

West of Sunset
by Stewart O'Nan
A moving, entertaining novel about F. Scott Fitzgerald's time as a Hollywood screenwriter. Here Fitzgerald comes back into contact with his first love, the rich, unattainable Ginevra, clearly his model for Daisy Buchanan in The Great Gatsby, all while falling into an intense love affair with Sheilah Graham, a Hollywood gossip columnist many years his junior. Sheilah is a fascinating character in her own right, a self-invented heroine who could have stepped out of the pages of one of Fitzgerald's own novels. O'Nan has re-created the ambiance of the Hollywood studio system in the late 1930s, where Fitzgerald is hired to doctor scripts that might never see the light of day and frequently finds himself defenseless against overweening producers and back-stabbing co-writers. $16.00

World Gone By by Dennis Lehane
Lehane has created another psychologically and morally complex novel of blood, crime, passion, and vengeance, this time set in Cuba and Ybor City, Florida, during World War II.

(available Jan. 5) $16.99

The Daylight Marriage by Heidi Pitlor
From Kathy: The Daylight Marriage is a suspenseful, thought-provoking psychological mystery-thriller that will haunt you long after you finish!  Part of what makes this novel so powerful is that it is so realistic; the events could happen to any marriage or family, on any given ordinary day. Stephen King's quote on the cover is such an accurate description of reading this book: ""Hypnotically readable--I absolutely couldn't put it down. The structure is brilliant, and I turned the pages with increasing dread. This book is terrific."  I agree. $15.95

Early Warning by Jane Smiley
This second volume of Smiley's Last Hundred Years trilogy (the first book was Some Luck) is the story of the Langdons, an Iowa farming family, from 1953 through 1986.  While the siblings at the novel's heart chart their own paths, they're never truly apart. The Langdon family is a character unto itself as they live through the Cold War, upheavals of the 1960s, the Kennedy assassination and more. (available Jan. 12) $16.00

A God in Ruins by Kate Atkinson
If you've read Atkinson's terrific 2013 novel, Life After Life (and if you haven't you should!), you will recognize Teddy as the younger brother of Ursula Todd, the heroine of that novel. In this companion novel, Teddy's story is told through both war and family drama, showing the difficult transition from wartime to peacetime in the rapidly shifting culture of the twentieth century. (available Jan. 12) $17.99

The Jaguar's Children
Immigration from Latin America continues to be a hot-button issue, and this story is definitely ripped from the headlines. Fifteen illegal immigrants from Oaxaca and further south are trapped in a water truck in the desert near Tucson. The truck, which broke down, has been welded shut and abandoned by the coyotes who were paid to get the passengers to the United States. Using his injured friend Cesar's cellphone, Hector Lazaro tries to find help and creates sound files describing his and Cesar's lives. And with each message there is less water in the truck and less hope for survival.   (available Jan. 5) $14.95

The Buried Giant
Set in ancient Britain, The Buried Giant concerns the journey of an aging couple, Axl and Beatrice, hoping to find a son they have not seen for years.  Moving and strangely believable, Buried Giant is a haunting tale that you will think about for days after you read the final sentence.  Written by the award-winning author of The Remains of the Day.  (available Jan. 5) $16.00
New Nonfiction:

Maggie Smith, a Biography
by Michael Coveney
You've seen her on Downton Abbey and in the Harry Potter movies and more!  Meet A Maggie Smith, everyone's favorite dowager countess. This absorbing biography, written with the actress's blessing and drawing on personal archives, as well as interviews with immediate family and close friends, is a portrait of one of the great actors of our time.  $27.99

Into a Raging Sea
by Bernie Webber
Most people familiar with the name Bernie Webber associate him with the miraculous rescue of 32 men off of the stern of the Pendleton, made famous in the book and movie The Finest Hours.  Amazingly, the boat Bernie skippered that terrible night was a mere 36 feet in length and the waves were almost twice that size! Bernie and crew received the Coast Guard's coveted Gold Lifesaving Medal, and what they did on that stormy night is regarded as the greatest small boat rescue in history.
Here Bernie tells that story and more. You'll read about rescue attempts that did not turn out well, stories of fishermen from a time long past, rescues done with the by-gone technique of the breeches buoy, humorous anecdotes, and what Cape Cod and its people meant to Bernie.  (paperback) $15.95

KooKooLand by Gloria Norris
"For anyone who might suppose that a New Hampshire childhood was about tapping maple trees and picking apples, here comes the dark side. I could not have dreamed up a family like the one Gloria Norris brings to life on these pages : crazy, funny, terrifying-or a childhood more filled with confusing contradiction. The brilliance of her story is that she somehow survived the violence that might have destroyed her to give us this dazzling, funhouse ride of a memoir. When you emerge, you may want to run away fast. Or buy another ticket and go back inside." (Joyce Maynard, author of Labor Day and Under the Influence) (available Jan. 5) $27.00

Empire of Deception: The Incredible Story of a Master Swindler Who Seduced a City and Captivated the Nation
by Dean Jobb
Before Bernie Madoff, before Charles Ponzi, there was Leo Koretz. In 1920s Chicago, the unsuccessful lawyer began his foray into crime by selling fake mortgages, using the money from new investors to pay the dividends to previous buyers, but his real fortune came from a swindle claiming to have "struck oil" in Panama.  Koretz was a master of reverse psychology - he would leak the news of his great investment and make his "marks" beg to be allowed to invest. The swindler eventually died in prison, but his techniques live on in today's headlines.  This lively, entertaining, and depressingly relevant history reads like a novel and will be enjoyed by fans of popular history as well as true crime. (paperback available Jan. 5) $16.95

Sailor and Fiddler; Reflections of a 100-year-old Author by Herman Wouk

Popular writer Herman Wouk (The Caine Mutiny, Marjorie Morningstar, War and Remembrance, The Winds of War,  Youngblood Hawke) has lived through two centuries. At 100 years old, he has written a reflection of his experiences and the inspirations for his novels.  He began his career as professional comedy writer, and that talent shows here, keeping things on the upbeat. The first part (Sailor) refers to his Navy experience and writing career, the second (Fiddler) to what he's learned from living a life of faith. If you're a fan of Herman Wouk, you will enjoy reading Sailor and Fiddler! (available Jan. 5) $20.00

Five Nice Mice Build a House
by Chisato Tashiro
In this charming story, two very big cats have just moved into the old building where the five nice mice live. They search and search for a safer home, until they find "an extraordinary mountain" of cast-off armchairs and clocks, cans and lampshades: the city dump. Delighted, they decide to build a house. A big red chair, overturned, makes an ideal roof, a clock makes a nice pantry and kitchen. The afternoon nap room is perfect: "And when they were finished, the light shone through the glass balls and filled the room with soft, magical light." Then, uh-oh! a cat comes by! He gets tangled in some twine and the nice little mice gnaw him free. In return he becomes their loyal "watch cat."  We love these little mice and we think you and your children will, too! $17.99
Chapter Books:

Under Their Skin by Margaret Peterson Haddix
Twelve-year-old twins Nick and Eryn aren't terribly surprised when their mother informs them she is getting remarried; she and Michael have been dating for several years. Moving to a new house won't be so bad, since they will go to the same school, and they will still alternate weeks at their father's house like always. But when she tells them that to ease the transition they won't be meeting their new stepsiblings, Ava and Jackson, Nick and Eryn's curiosity is piqued, and they can't stop devising plans to get in touch with the new kids. When they finally figure out where Ava and Jackson live, they see something that shocks them to their core. The book's underlying secret is well thought-out, supplying explanations while still building tension. The major question readers will want answered is the one Nick and Eryn want answered, too.  A crisp, intriguing, and thought-provoking tale that's hits the bull's-eye for its middle-grade audience.  Ages 8-12 (available Jan. 5) $16.99

Six Feet Over It
by Jennifer Longo

No one is more surprised than Leigh when her father buys a graveyard. Less shocking is the fact that he's too lazy to look farther than the dinner table for employees. Working the literal graveyard shift, she becomes great at predicting headstone choice (mostly granite) and taking notes with one hand while offering Kleenex with the other.
Sarcastic and smart, Leigh should be able to quit this stupid after-school job. But her world s been turned upside down by the sudden loss of her best friend and the appearance of Dario, the slightly-too-old-for-her gravedigger. Can Leigh move on, if moving on means it s time to get a life? (paperback available Jan. 12) $9.99
