This celebration of Cape Cod focuses on gratitude for simple pleasures and includes reflections on life in a seaside community. (Book price $24.99)

When she's not in the kitchen, she's often writing about food as a freelancer for Cape Cod publications. Linda is also a humanities faculty member at Massachusetts Maritime Academy, where she teaches courses in writing and literature. Book Club:

No Book Club in December!

Oh, keep calm! We will carry on in January with At the Water's Edge by Sara Gruen!

"At the Water's Edge is a rich, beautiful novel. Compulsively readable, it is at once a gripping love story, a profound examination of the effects of war on ordinary women, and a compelling portrait of female friendship. While delving into powerful themes, Sara Gruen never loses sight of what matters: her characters. This story of one privileged young woman, coming of age in a time of impossible upheaval and terrible choices, will keep you riveted until the very last page." - review from Kristin Hannah, author of The Nightingale.

Author Sara Gruen will be joining our discussion by phone!

Staff Favorites - Fiction:

The Muralist
by B.A. Shapiro
The disappearance in 1940 of the young American Painter, Alizee Benoit is a mystery to her friends and family. Seventy years later Benoit's niece Danielle is researching her family history and wonders what happened to her ancestor who was a moving force in the Abstract Expressionist field in New York City. In this well researched historical novel the author moves gracefully between the present day and the early days of WWII. Shapiro's The Art Forger has been one of our favorite books to recommend and we are equally excited about The Muralist. $26.95, our price $21.56
The Japanese Lover
by Isabelle Allende
A beautiful, complex story of love, sacrifice and redemption! In 1939, an eight-year-old Polish girl named Alma is sent from Poland as the Nazis advance, to live with her aunt and uncle in San Francisco. There she meets a Japanese boy her age, Ichimei, who will be her great love, and her older cousin Nathaniel, who will be her best friend. Alma's story is revealed from a distance of many years, when a young Eastern European woman named Irina takes a job at the senior residence Alma has just moved into. The story of Alma's love unfolds in a narrative alternating between passionate old age and the passions of youth. A staff favorite! $28.00, our price $22.40

Circling the Sun
by Paula McLain
From Elizabeth M: The author of The Paris Wife once again produces an amazing story of a strong willed and remarkable woman.  With this novel based on the life of Beryl Markham, McLain captures the magic of life in Kenya in the 1920's where Markham was raised by her father on a horse farm. Markham became the first female horse trainer in Africa and later became the first aviator to fly across the Atlantic from England to North America.  This is an eloquently written story of a complicated woman who, though she married three times, was most in love with Africa and with men who were not available to her.  Loved this book!!  $28.00, our price $22.40

From Karen: Once again author Kate Morton weaves two stories from the past and present to mesmerizing effect. In 1930's Cornwall England, the wealthy Edevane family prepares for the annual midsummer ball at Loenneth, their isolated estate. That night, someone kidnaps baby Theo; despite a police investigation, he is never found. Theo's teenage sister Alice is haunted by the event.  In 2003 London, Det. Sgt. Sadie Sparrow is suspended after speaking to the media about a closed missing-person case that haunts her.  The compelling story moves back and forth in time as Sparrow uncovers what happened to Theo in 1933 while also resolving the recent missing-person case.

Avenue of Mysteries by John Irving
Successful novelist Juan Diego Guerrero is traveling to the Philippines to fulfill a long-ago promise. On his journey, he is taken under the wing of a mysterious mother and daughter, who seem to appear and disappear at opportune times and manipulate his actions. Perhaps owing to his misuse of his beta-blocker prescription, Juan Diego is haunted by memories of his childhood in Oaxaca, Mexico, and his sister Lupe, who can read minds and predict the future (though not always accurately), and who speaks a strange gibberish that only he can understand.  The "mysteries" in the title refer primarily to the religious sense of the word, particularly as manifested in miracles and visions of the Virgin Mary.   $28.00, our price $22.40

Come Rain or Come Shine by Jan Karon
From Elizabeth S:
I love having a series of books to read. Each new installment is like a family reunion with characters you only see once in a while.
After having read all the Mitford books and even plenty of Jan Karon's other books, I was so excited to pick up Come Rain or Come Shine. I felt as if I had watched Dooley and Lace grow up through the series, so it was fantastic to read about how they finally start their new life together as husband and wife. Another great story by Jan Karon!! $27.95, our price $22.36

The Nature of the Beast by Louise Penny
Penny's 11th mystery featuring beloved homicide detective Armand Gamache of the small village of Three Pines, deep in the woods of Quebec Province, is one of her very best. Combining her trademark elements of science, history, art, psychology, and the fabulous food of the Three Pines bistro, Penny weaves a tale that is haunting and unputdownable. If you haven't treated yourself to Louise Penny before now, The Nature of the Beast is an excellent place to start.

The People in the Photo by Helene Gestern
From Elizabeth M: Recently a customer told me how much they had enjoyed this book and I immediately wanted to read it. As a letter writer I especially enjoy well written epistolary novels and this one certainly belongs in this category. A young woman in Paris posts a newspaper ad inquiring about the identity of two men in a photo. She receives an answer from a gentleman in England who believes one of the men is his father. In the correspondence that follows they discover many undisclosed family stories that they share. The story moves seamlessly back in forth between the present and the time the photograph was taken in the 1970's. One discovery leads to another and you will want to keep reading until the very satisfactory ending!  $14.95

A thriller, a page-turner, and gorgeously written! You will not want to put this down once you start reading!
