New and Recommended Books
New Fiction:

The Muralist by B.A. Shapiro
From Elizabeth M: The disappearance in 1940 of the young American Painter, Alizee Benoit is a mystery to her friends and family. Seventy years later Benoit's niece Danielle is researching her family history and wonders what happened to her ancestor who was a moving force in the Abstract Expressionist field in New York City. In this well researched historical novel the author moves gracefully between the present day and the early days of WWII. Shapiro's The Art Forger has been one of our favorite books to recommend and we are equally excited about The Muralist. Reg. price $26.95, our price $21.56

Avenue of Mysteries
by John Irving

Successful novelist Juan Diego Guerrero is traveling to the Philippines to fulfill a long-ago promise. On his journey, he is taken under the wing of a mysterious mother and daughter, who seem to appear and disappear at opportune times and manipulate his actions. Perhaps owing to his misuse of his beta-blocker prescription, Juan Diego is haunted by memories of his childhood in Oaxaca, Mexico, and his sister Lupe, who can read minds and predict the future (though not always accurately), and who speaks a strange gibberish that only he can understand.  The "mysteries" in the title refer primarily to the religious sense of the word, particularly as manifested in miracles and visions of the Virgin Mary. (available Nov. 3) Reg. price $28.00, our price $22.40

Velveteen Vargas is eleven years old, a Fresh Air Fund kid from Brooklyn. Her host family is a couple in upstate New York: Ginger, a failed artist on the fringe of Alcoholics Anonymous, and Paul, an academic who wonders what it will mean to "make a difference" in such a contrived situation. The Mare illuminates the couple's changing relationship with Velvet over the course of several years, as well as Velvet's powerful encounter with the horses at the stable down the road.  Author Mary Gaitskill movingly contrasts Velvet's vital inner-city community and the privileged country world of Ginger and Paul.  (available Nov. 3)
Reg. price $26.95, our price $21.56

The  Japanese Lover by Isabel Allende
In 1939, as Poland falls under the shadow of the Nazis, young Alma Belasco's parents send her away to live in safety with an aunt and uncle in their opulent mansion in San Francisco. There, she encounters Ichimei Fukuda, the quiet and gentle son of the family's Japanese gardener and a tender and hidden love affair blossoms. Following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, the two are cruelly pulled apart as Ichimei and his family are forcibly relocated to internment camps run by the United States government.

Decades later, Alma is nearing the end of her long and eventful life. Irina Bazili, a care worker struggling to come to terms with her own troubled past, meets the elderly woman and her grandson, Seth, at San Francisco's charmingly eccentric Lark House nursing home. As Irina and Seth forge a friendship, they become intrigued by a series of mysterious gifts and letters sent to Alma, eventually learning about Ichimei and this extraordinary secret passion that has endured for nearly seventy years. The Japanese Lover explores questions of identity, abandonment, redemption, and the unknowable impact of fate on our lives. (available Nov. 3) Reg. price $28.00, our price $22.40

Along the Infinite Sea by Beatriz Williams
From Fran: I had the good fortune and good sense to binge-read Beatriz Williams' novels before her visit to Titcomb's this past summer. I fell in love with her deeply woven stories about the Schuyler family and particularly the colorful Schuyler sisters. I am pleased to recommend Ms. Williams' latest novel, Along the Infinite Sea
, out November 3rd. Once again we are transported through different eras with a wonderful tale of one of the Schuyler sisters. On this ride we are captained by Pepper Schuyler, who has unearthed a rare vintage Mercedes from a garage on Cape Cod. The restoration and subsequent sale of this vehicle in 1966 is Pepper's safety net to support her and her unborn love child. In walks Annabelle Dommerich who buys the luxury car at auction and has her own tale to tell, this one from WWII. I guarantee you will want to be in the back seat for this ride! Buckle up - twist and turns ahead! (You do not need to read Beatriz Williams' novels in any particular order to enjoy the full impact!) (available Nov. 3) Reg. price $26.95, our price $21.56

A Banquet of Consequences by Elizabeth George
Hurray! A new Lynley mystery! Here Inspector Lynley investigates the London angle of an ever more darkly disturbing case. His partner, Barbara Havers, is looking behind the peaceful facade of country life to discover a twisted world of desire, deceit, and murder. Full of shocks, intensity and suspense from first page to last, A Banquet of Consequences is a has both Lynley and Havers under mounting pressure to solve one of the most complex cases they have ever encountered.  Reg. price $28.95, our price $23.16

The Lake House by Kate Morton
From Karen: Once again author Kate Morton weaves two stories from the past and present to mesmerizing effect. In 1930's Cornwall England, the wealthy Edevane family prepares for the annual midsummer ball at Loenneth, their isolated estate. That night, someone kidnaps baby Theo; despite a police investigation, he is never found. Theo's teenage sister Alice is haunted by the event.  In 2003 London, Det. Sgt. Sadie Sparrow is suspended after speaking to the media about a missing-person case, recently closed, that haunts her. Sparrow seeks refuge with her grandfather in Cornwall. On her first morning run there, she finds the abandoned Loenneth mansion deep in the woods. Sadie is intrigued with the house, the interior left just as it was, books and papers, teacups, as if the residents had just stepped away. She begins to investigate the 70-year-old Edevane case and Sparrow locates the now-elderly Alice, a celebrated mystery writer in London, who hands over the keys to the estate so Theo's case can be reopened. The compelling story moves back and forth in time as Sparrow uncovers what happened to Theo in 1933 while also resolving the recent missing-person case. Reg price $28.00, our price $22.40

Rogue Lawyer by John Grisham
Reliable John Grisham - the protagonist of this novel is charming, and fans will enjoy meeting "rogue lawyer" Sebastian Rudd, who fights for justice for his clients.  Grisham's usual themes are in full evidence, making for a comforting, satisfying read. Reg. price $28.95, our price $23.16

Slade House by David Mitchell

From KathySlade House is a page-burning, read-in-one-sitting, at times terrifying novel! It has everything one expects from a David Mitchell novel (Cloud Atlas, Bone Clocks), but it will also creep the pants off you. I won't tell you anything about the plot - no spoilers here!  A warning, however: just as Slade House won't let go of its unsuspecting guests, you won't be able to put this book down. Welcome to Slade House. Step inside...   Reg. price $26.00, our price $20.80

A Strangeness in My Mind by Orhan Pamuk
Mevlut Karatas, the novel's hero, is a street vendor who sells boza, a traditional Turkish beverage. The novel follows the love story between Mevlut and his girlfriend as well as Mevlut's life in the streets of Istanbul. Spanning over four decades, from 1969 to 2012, Mevlut witnesses the various transformations the city, the people and Turkey in general undergo. All the while, Mevlut often wonders what the source of this "strangeness" in his mind is - a strangeness that makes him different from all the others.  Reg. price $28.95, our price $23.16

Golden Age by Jane Smiley

Wow! If you have been reading Jane Smiley's amazing Hundred Years series (Some Luck, Early Warning) you will want to dive in to Golden Age and continue the story, which brings the Langdon family from 1987 up through 2019. Smiley's trilogy demonstrates repeatedly that most lives are a combination of improvisation and serendipity, good luck and bad. Her characters wonder if the golden age is behind them. But Claire, the last surviving child of Walter and Rosanna, reflects on the bright spots of her 80 years, including "the endless Iowa horizon, a pan of shortbread emerging from the oven, and her grandchildren laughing in the next room." It makes her realize that "all golden ages, perhaps, were discovered within."

Golden Age provides a satisfying finale to a portrait of an American family and an American century.
Reg. price $26.95, our price $21.56

Twain and Stanley Enter Paradise by Oscar Hijuelos

Hijuelos gave us many beautiful novels, including the Pulitzer Prize-winning The Mambo Kings Play Songs of Love.  Discovered by Hijuelos's widow after his death in 2013, Twain and Stanley tells the story of journalist-explorer Henry Stanley; his wife, the painter Dorothy Tennant; and Mark Twain, Stanley's longtime friend, as they head for Cuba in search of Stanley's father. If you have enjoyed Hijuelos' novels, you will definitely want to read this fascinating story!  (avail. Nov.3) Reg. price $28.00, our price $22.40

Career of Evil by Robert Galbraith
Of course we all know by now that Robert Galbraith is the pseudonym for J.K. Rowling of Harry Potter fame. This is the third book in the Cormoran Strike crime fiction series, after The Cuckoo's Calling and The Silkworm.
Again featuring private detective Cormoran Strike and his assistant Robin Ellacott, Career of Evil is a fiendishly clever mystery with unexpected twists around every corner. It is also a gripping story of a man and a woman at a crossroads in their personal and professional lives. Reg. price $28.00, our price 22.40

The Bazaar of Bad Dreams; Stories by Stephen King
Stephen King is a master story teller! This collection of twenty stories includes King's introduction to each, also providing the inspiration for each.  "I made them especially for you," says King. "Feel free to examine them, but please be careful. The best of them have teeth."  (available Nov. 3) Reg. price $30.00, our price $24.00

The Magic Strings of Frankie Presto by Mitch Albom
Mitch Albom's (Tuesdays with Morrie) new novel is the tale of young Frankie Presto, a war orphan raised by a blind music teacher in a small Spanish town.  Frankie's musical talent is touched by the gods, and his amazing journey weaves him through the musical landscape of the 20th century, from classical to jazz to rock and roll, with his stunning talent affecting numerous stars along the way, including Hank Williams, Elvis Presley, Carole King, Wynton Marsalis and even KISS.  At the height of his popularity, Frankie Presto vanishes and his legend grows.
With its Forest Gump-like romp through the music world, The Magic Strings of Frankie Presto reminds readers that "everyone joins a band in this life" and those connections change us all.  (available Nov. 10) Reg. price $24.99, our price $19.99
New Nonfiction

The Witches; Salem, 1692 by Stacy Shiff
Since the Puritans, full of shame, did their best to wipe out all records of the 1692 Salem witch trials, the true story of what happened has suffered from distortions over the years. The true story, though, of girls convulsing in the courtroom and accusing their neighbors of bewitching them, of husbands accusing wives, of a child younger than 6 having her mother hanged, is almost too painful to believe. Schiff masterfully brings this environment of paranoia to life.  The Witches is a fascinating account of one of America's most infamous years.  $32.00

The Givenness of Things: Essays by Marilynne Robinson
In these 17 essays, Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist Robinson discusses such themes as ethics, morality, reverence, and her own convictions as a Christian.

Deeply thoughtful essays on troubling and divisive cultural and spiritual issues.  $26.00

The Only Street in Paris; Life on the Rue des Martyrs by Elaine Sciolino

Rowdy by Christopher Masden
If you are a sailor or have one in your life, you will want to have this book!
When Christopher Madsen discovered a 1916 yacht in a garage in much need of renovation, he made the snap decision to buy it. During the course of working on the Herreshoff-built "New York 40", he found clues and glimpses into the personal life of the original owner, Holland Sackett Duell.  This is an amazing story of the life of the owner, and of the boat herself. The reader will be transported back in time to the Golden Age of Yachting and so much more!

Rowdy is a gorgeously designed book - it has the look and feel of worn, vintage leather, contains a woven burgundy book mark, gilt edges - full of illustrations -  a wonderful gift! $55.00

Dear Mr. You by Mary Louise Parker
Actress Mary Louise Parker (Weeds, Proof, Angels in America) brings her talent for words to the page in this epistolary collection as she recounts scenes from her life through the men who have influenced her, for better or worse. In a letter to her late father, she writes of his time as a soldier in the Philippines in WWII, where he was shot, barely making it out alive. Decades later, he takes the family to Europe when he can't afford it because Parker's plans to make the trip with friends fell through. Like her performances, some of her recollections and interpretations come across as unusual, but there are also many lovely moments touched with grace and beauty. (available Nov. 10)
$25.00

Every Time I Find the Meaning of Life, They Change It, by Daniel Klein
We love Daniel Klein - his books, Plato and a Platypus Walk into a Bar.. and Travels with Epicurus are staff favorites. Every time he visits the bookshop we have a ball! When he was in his early 20s and 30s, he kept a notebook titled "Pithies," containing his favorite philosophical quotes. He hoped that they would become a guide on how to live a meaningful life. However, the notebook was eventually packed away and not consulted again until now, when he is in his eighties. Don't you just love the title?  The chapters are short, making this a book that easily lends itself to brief, meandering reading spurts. $20.00

Ardennes 1944; The Battle of the Bulge by Antony Beevor

Military historian Antony Beevor's new book focuses on what many consider the greatest and one of the most savage offensives of the Second World War, the Battle of the Bulge.(available Nov. 3) $35.00

Click here to listen to the author talk about this battle.

America's Bank by Roger Lowenstein
Without the Federal Reserve Bank, there might not be e-commerce or even an Internet. A century ago the country lacked the financial institutions to be globally competitive, let alone innovate in ways that characterize the 21st century. America's Bank is Roger Lowenstein's highly entertaining, informative, and readable chronicle of The Epic Struggle to Create the Federal Reserve.  $29.95

Clementine; The Life of Mrs. Winston Churchill by Sonia Purnell
Churchill once declared that victory in World War II would have been impossible without his wife, Clementine, so it's surprising that the only biography we have was published 35 years ago by her daughter Mary Soames. Now, longtime political reporter Sonia Purnell (the "Economist") offers an account drawing on the year she spent doing research on a Churchill fellowship and everyone still alive who worked with Clementine.  An illuminating life of a remarkable woman. $30.00

Lion of the Senate; When Ted Kennedy Rallied the Democrats in a GOP Congress by Nick Littlefield
This earnest, respectful account of Sen. Ted Kennedy at the peak of his senatorial powers evokes nostalgia for a bygone era of bipartisan lawmaking. Littlefield, longtime staffer for the Massachusetts Democrat, chronicles the time between the Republican electoral surge of 1994, which made way for Newt Gingrich's Contract with America, and Bill Clinton's 1996 re-election. If you are a Kennedy buff or a student of political science, you will want to add this book to your library. (available Nov. 10)
$35.00

Stories in the Stars; An Atlas of the Constellations by Susanna Hislop
Author and stargazer Susanna Hislop and international artist Hannah Waldron present an imaginative journey through the heavens. Leaping between centuries, cultures, and traditions, they explore each of the night sky's eighty-eight constellations through gorgeous illustrations and vivid descriptions that will linger in readers minds long after they've closed the book and stepped outside on a starry night. (available Nov. 3) $30.00

Knitting Pearls by Ann Hood
In Knitting Pearls, two dozen writers write about the  healing powers of knitting. Lily King remembers the year her family lived in Italy and a knitted hat that helped her daughter adjust to her new home. Laura Lippman explores how converting to Judaism changed not only Christmas but also her mother s gift of a knitted stocking. Jodi Picoult remembers her grandmother and how through knitting she felt that everlasting love. And Bill Roorbach remembers his freshman year in college when knitting soothed his broken heart and helped him fall in love again. Other contributors include Steve Almond, Ann Leary, Christina Baker Kline, Lee Woodruff, and knitting rock stars Jared Flood of Brooklyn Tweed and the Yarn Whisperer, Clara Parks. $25.95

**Mark your calendars! Ann Hood will be joining our December Knitting Club in person on Monday, December 7 to talk about her new book! **

The Turnip by Jan Brett
In Jan Brett's newest picture book, a badger family and their friends - Hedgie, Mr. Ram and Vanya, the horse - struggle to pull up a giant turnip. A cocky rooster steps in and pulls, sending him into the air, holding onto the turnip. No one knows that a mother bear in her underground den has kicked the turnip up through the soil to give the family room to sleep through the winter. Snow covers the farm in rural Russia as badgers and friends in old-fashioned clothes, and bears marching through bright-colored borders, send young readers laughing from page to page. (available Nov. 3) $17.99

Thank You and Good Night by Patrick McDonnell
From Kathy:  We love this little book! The illustrations are absolutely charming.  Maggie hosts a pajama party - Clement, Alan Alexander, and Jean play games, and get sleepy - but they don't forget to say "thank you" for all the fun.
$15.99

Little Tree by Loren Long
Little Tree loves his leaves so much that he refuses to let them go. In the cool autumn breezes, all the trees' leaves turn beautiful colors and then begin to drop. But Little Tree can't imagine living without his leaves and hugs them tight even when they turn brown and winter arrives. As the seasons pass, he remains fearful of dropping his leaves. Little Tree finally realizes that he has been left behind and lets go of the leaves, allowing him to grow and accept change in order to reach his destiny. The text is simple and so descriptive. Chapter Books
My Diary from the Edge of the World by Jodi Lynn Anderson
Told in diary form by an irresistible heroine, this playful and perceptive novel sparkles with science, myth, magic, and the strange beauty of the everyday marvels. Spirited, restless Gracie Lockwood has lived in Cliffden, Maine, her whole life. She's a typical girl in an atypical world: one where sasquatches helped to win the Civil War, where dragons glide over Route 1 on their way south for the winter, where giants hide in caves and mermaids hunt along the beaches, and where Dark Clouds come for people when they die.
To Gracie it s all pretty ho-hum until a Cloud comes looking for her little brother Sam. Determined to protect Sam against all odds, her parents pack the family into a used Winnebago and set out on an epic search for a safe place that most people say doesn't exist: The Extraordinary World. It's rumored to lie at the ends of the earth, and no one has ever made it there and lived to tell the tale.

Adam and Thomas by Aharon Appelfeld
From Vicky: This is a haunting, dreamlike story of two Jewish boys have been left in the forest by their mothers during WWII. They find each other and together discover ways to survive when their mothers do not return.  They scavenge for food and make a shelter in the trees.  They discover some cows and take their milk. A former classmate, now living with a brutal family, risks everything to bring them food.  This book was a bestseller in France.  It was inspired by the author's own experience as a young boy as he survived in the forests of Eastern Europe for three years beginning at age 8 during World War II.  Beautifully illustrated throughout.  $18.95

Young Adult

A Step Toward Falling by Cammie McGovern
From Vicky:  I absolutely loved this beautifully written and very moving story of the aftermath of an assault on a special needs high school student named Belinda. Two students saw the attack and were not able or not willing to get help for her. Emily is a good student, preparing for college and active in a student social issues awareness group. Lucas is a football player. After the attack, they are required to do public service in a class for disabled young adults. Belinda in the meantime does not go back to school, but stays at home spending much of her time and focus watching a movie of Pride and Prejudice starring Colin Firth.

The book is perfectly narrated alternately by Emily and Belinda. I was so moved by Belinda, whose voice rings particularly true as she tells her story with great innocence and honesty. This is a love story, and also a story of forgiveness and acceptance. The author runs a center for 600 children and young adults with disabilities, and her knowledge of and empathy with disabled young adults is so evident in this book! This would be a wonderful discussion book. Ages 14 and up.  $17.95

Illuminae by Amy Kaufman
For fans of "The Fifth Wave" and James Dashner comes the first book in a heart-stopping, high-octane trilogy about lives interrupted, the price of truth, and the courage of everyday heroes.

One morning, Kady thought breaking up with Ezra was the hardest thing she'd have to do, but that afternoon, her planet was invaded. The year is 2575, and two rival megacorporations are at war over a planet that's little more than an ice-covered speck at the edge of the universe. With enemy fire raining down on them, Kady and Ezra who are barely even talking to each other are forced to evacuate with an enemy warship in hot pursuit.  But their problems are just getting started. A plague has broken out and is mutating, with terrifying results; the fleet's AI, which should be protecting them, may actually be their enemy; and nobody in charge will say what's really going on. As Kady hacks into a web of data to find the truth, it's clear only one person can help her bring it all to light: the ex-boyfriend she swore she'd never speak to again.  Ages 14 and up.
