Book Talk
Joe Williams
Seventeen Fathoms Deep: The Saga of the
Submarine S-4 Disaster
Thursday, October 15    7pm
Sandwich Public Library

Author and naval historian Joseph A. Williams has delved into never before revealed archival sources to tell the compelling narrative of a submarine disaster off Cape Cod in 1927, the first attempt to rescue survivors stranded aboard a modern sub.

The rescue divers could hear the crew tapping out a message in Morse code: Is there any hope? After being accidentally rammed by the Coast Guard destroyer USS Paulding on December 17, 1927, the USS S-4 submarine sank to the ocean floor off Cape Cod with all forty crew aboard. Only six sailors in the forward torpedo room survived the initial accident, trapped in the compartment with the oxygen running out.  Book price $26.99

SUSAN  BRANCH!!!!!!!

The Fairy Tale Girl
Saturday, October 17
1-3pm

Susan Branch will be here to sign copies of her beautifully illustrated new memoir, The Fairy Tale Girl!

The Fairy Tale Girl is the first of a 2-part memoir, charmingly designed in Susan's style with her whimsical watercolors and personal photographs. Susan  humorously explores her journey as an artist and as a girl/woman, from the 1950s through the 1980s. In this first book of the series we get a revealing view of Susan's early life as the oldest of eight children and the marriage she imagined would last forever. The book is about inspiration, romance and discovery, and includes a giant leap into the unknown.

Together the two books are the story of love and loss, mystery and magic that began in a geranium-colored house in California, and ended up, like any good fairy tale, on the right side of the rabbit hole, in a small cottage in the woods on the New England island of Martha's Vineyard - starting over from scratch in a place where, as Susan says, they have this thing called "winter."  Book price $28.95

A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman

From Elizabeth M: This first novel written by a Swedish blogger is a charming story.  You will come to love this cranky old man whose world is black and white.  He is a rule-follower who has no patience with people who are not. His tale unfolds when a new family moves into his neighborhood and accidently flattens his mailbox. Unlikely friendships are formed that produce laughter and tears.  At the end of the book you will want to share it with others. Reg. price $16.00, Book Club price $12.80

Have you heard the news?  Sandwich Reads Together will host bestselling author Anita Diamant in conversation with WCAI Radio host Mindy Todd to talk about her unforgettable and inspiring new book, The Boston Girl on Sunday, October 25 at 3:00.

Seating is limited and tickets are required.  Get your tickets at the Sandwich Public Library or Titcomb's Bookshop - or go to sandwichpubliclibrary.com to order your tickets online.

About The Boston Girl:  Addie Baum is the spirited daughter of an immigrant Jewish family, born in 1900 to parents who were unprepared for America and its effect on their three daughters. Growing up in Boston's North End, Addie's intelligence and curiosity take her to a world her parents can't imagine--a world of short skirts, movies, celebrity culture, and new opportunities for women. Addie wants to finish high school and dreams of going to college. She wants a career and to find true love. From the one-room tenement apartment she shared with her parents and two sisters, to the library group for girls she joins at a neighborhood settlement house, to her first, disastrous love affair, to finding the love of her life, eighty-five-year-old Addie recounts her adventures with humor and compassion for the naive girl she once was. The Boston Girl is a moving portrait of one woman's complicated life in twentieth century America, and a fascinating look at a generation of women finding their places in a changing world.

Anita Diamant is the author of a number of bestselling books, including The Red Tent, Day After Night, Good Harbor and The Last Days of Dogtown.   She is the founding president Mayyim Hayyim, Living Waters Community Mikveh and Education Center in Newton Massachusetts - a reinvention of the ancient Jewish tradition of mikveh, ritual immersion in water.

After You by Jojo Moyes
From Fran and Elizabeth S: Me Before You has been a shop and staff favorite for over a year, occupying prime real estate on our front table! We are thrilled to report that After You is the sequel! The author has asked readers not to share anything about the plot and we feel duty bound by that request.  We have read it and guarantee you will not be disappointed. Enough said!
Reg. price $26.95, our price $21.56

Come Rain or Come Shine by Jan Karon
From Elizabeth S:
I love having a series of books to read. Each new installment is like a family reunion with characters you only see once in a while.

After having read all the Mitford books and even plenty of Jan Karon's other books, I was so excited to pick up Come Rain or Come Shine. I felt as if I had watched Dooley and Lace grow up through the series, so it was fantastic to read about how they finally start their new life together as husband and wife. Another great story by Jan Karon!!  Reg. price $27.95, our price $22.36

The Secret Chord by Geraldine Brooks
The account of King David in The Secret Chord is told through the eyes of Natan, David's courtier.  David has commissioned Natan to interview his mother and other family members about the early events of David's life.  Natan is well aware that he is treading a dangerous line: the king is volatile and could well turn against him, and his family will not willingly reveal deep secrets. According to author Brooks, "David is the first man in literature whose story is told in detail from early childhood to extreme old age."  A fascinating read.

Geraldine Brooks is the author of the Pulitzer Prize winning March, and novels Caleb's Crossing, People of the Book, and Year of Wonders.  Born and raised in Australia, she lives on Martha's Vineyard with her husband, the author Tony Horwitz. Reg. price $27.95, our price $22.36

All the Stars in the Heavens by Adriana Trigiani
From Elizabeth M: This historical novel is set in the Golden Age of Hollywood in the 1930's and the reader is quickly caught up in a tale that is based on a true story.  Larger than life movie stars such as Clark Gable, Spencer Tracy and David Niven play roles on the screen and in real life.  Loretta Young is a young actress who has been in the movies since she was a child.  She is cast in a film with Gable and they are immediately attracted to one another.  The story is enriched with the addition of a young woman who upon leaving the convent where she has spent several years becomes Loretta Young's secretary.   Reg. price $26.99, our price $21.60

The Survivor by Vince Flynn and Kyle Mills
A thriller author in his own right, Mills also picks up where other authors lost to us have left off, having written two books in Robert Ludlum's Covert-One series. Here, CIA counterterrorist agent Mitch Rapp, created by Flynn, is sent to dispose of Joseph "Rick" Rickman, a former CIA golden boy planning to offer Pakistan's secret forces a chunk of sensitive intelligence he's snatched. Alas, before his death Rickman hid the intel. Fans of Vince Flynn's novels will not be disappointed. Reg. price $28.00, our price $22.40

The Mountain Shadow by Gregory David Roberts
In The Mountain Shadow, two years have passed since the events in Shantaram. Lin has lost two people he had come to love: his father figure, Khaderbhai, and his soul mate, Karla, married to a handsome Indian media tycoon. Lin returns from a smuggling trip to a city that seems to have changed too much, too soon. Many of his old friends are long gone, the new mafia leadership has become entangled in increasingly violent and dangerous intrigues, and a fabled holy man challenges everything that Lin thought he d learned about love and life. But Lin can't leave the Island City: Karla, and a fatal promise, won't let him go.

Author Gregory David Roberts was born in Melbourne, Australia. Sentenced to nineteen years in prison for a series of armed robberies, he escaped and spent ten of his fugitive years in Bombay--where he established a free medical clinic for slum-dwellers, and worked as a counterfeiter, smuggler, gunrunner, and street soldier for a branch of the Bombay mafia. Recaptured, he served out his sentence, and established a successful multimedia company upon his release. Roberts is now a full-time writer and lives in Bombay.   (available Oct. 13) Reg. price $32.50, our price $26.00

City on Fire by Garth Hallberg
New York City, 1976. And when the blackout of July 13, 1977 plunges this world into darkness, each of these lives will be changed forever.

Thirteen Ways of Looking by Colum McCann
From Kathy: I love Colum McCann's work. (Transatlantic, Let the Great World Spin) In this book, McCann presents three short stories and a novella.
In the title novella, a retired judge reflects on his life's work, unaware as he goes about his daily routines that this particular morning will be his last. In "Sh'khol," a mother spending Christmas alone with her son confronts the unthinkable when he disappears while swimming off the coast near their home in Ireland. In "Treaty," an elderly nun catches a snippet of a news report in which it is revealed that the man who once kidnapped and brutalized her is alive, masquerading as an agent of peace. And in "What Time Is It Now, Where You Are?" a writer constructs a story about a Marine in Afghanistan calling home on New Year's Eve.
Each story is so powerful and moving - unforgettable!
(available Oct. 13) Reg. price $26.00, our price $20.80
